I just want to say thank you for this! I heard about John's return from another you tube video, that used his resurrection as a point on how meaningless death is comics. While I would agree initially, characters have risen from the grave countless times, and it was always strange that Thunderbird for a while was in the same category as Uncle ben and Batman's parents. Also the writing in this story is impeccable, and I love the inner conflicts John has. I am like one of 30 people who watched the gifted, but it's awesome to see him get a staring role again after that show was canned. Here's hoping he doesn't go the way of the Red Wolf revival!
As a side note, this reminds that technically Thunderbird II should be among the ranks of Krakoa, somewhere. Also that the first Mutant to die for Xavier - Changeling/Morph - still hasn't been mentioned.
im glad that thunderbird gets to do stuff again and i heard that when the mcu brings in the x men he is going to be there and i hope they either don't kill him immediately or if they do at least write his character and death well enough that its not a rehash of his original death
I saw a video that dismissed this comic as “woke” like the other grifters out there, and this video actually made me look at the issue for myself. Thank you for showing me how good this really was.
This book reminds me of the reason behind John's _death._ That at the height of the Cold War, a Native American character was deemed to be more political on the team, than a Russian.
@@pious83 It was more because he was so much like Wolverine. I mean, Indians had been in US propaganda during World War II. During the Cold War, tribes in parts of America that had been Russian at one time (Alaska, pats of Washington) switched from writing their languages in Cyrillic to Roman in disgust at the Soviet Union. (And yeah, I know, Cyrillic was originally Bulgarian.)
@@jonbrewer297 The original creative team on Second Genesis stated Thunderbird was removed due to being "too political". No other reason than that. I draw comparison between him and Colossus because they both served the same function, power-wise. Look at the cover to Giant Sized X-Men #1. Who is central to the cover? Colossus. He was actually supposed to be the breakout star. Wolverine's popularity took the creators by surprise. If you read the early Second Genesis issues, it is easy to see why. Because Logan was written as a asshole. No decision was made due to Wolverine in those early days.
@@jonbrewer297 The interviews made by the creative team in the 70's, say otherwise. It is in the first Marvel Masterwork Hard Cover they brought out a few years ago. Everything written in the 90's discussing the X-Men, would be Wolverine-centric.
Something I wanted from the Snyderverse: Cyborg to fight Slipknot. Just for a "hey Victor" reference. More seriously, the simple reason he was never brought back is 1) the same reason as Gwen Stacy, he died before Death of Superman made a mockery of death in front of literally the entire world, even people who don't read comics; and 2) if you remember him, you probably didn't like him. He was abrasive, kinda racist, misogynist...What were *checks wiki* Len Wein and Dave Cockrum thinking? (Wait, really? Those two created him? But I like them!) Arguably, he's the first Liefeldian antihero, years before Liefeld picked up a pen. Even the name Thunderbird doesn't make sense. He doesn't have electrical powers, so I'm going to assume these two were sipping Thunderbird (because it's my fantasy, they may as well be forced to suffer the worst liquor in the world) when they created him. The weird thing is, later Indians swung between better (his brother John, Dani) and much worse (Forge, just for that time he had a whole relationship with Storm and neglected to tell her he created the weapon which depowered her). Why does Thunderbird's costume seem like some bizarre fusion of several Nightwing costumes? The X gene plot could be a reference to attempts to patent Central American genes in the 90s. Why, I don't know; it was non-coding DNA.
He looks like Daken on steroids with a braid. I already have issues with Logan & Shaw looking too similar, or Mikhail & Piotyr looking too much like Mr. Sinister, or Saturnyne looking too much like Emma, & Tempus looking too much like Rogue, Xavier looking like Maker from Secret Wars.... Don't mind me folks. These are the rantings of someone who only dabbled in a little X-Men in the 90s & is trying to get back into it. I also have poor facial recognition skills.
@@pious83 I also meant his personality, though. You have to remember, I grew up on Dark Age comics, so I remember all the Liefeld pastiches. Even as a kid they didn't interest me, for the most part.
@@jonbrewer297 His personality was also in itself, political. Calling Xavier "Custer" etc Not the "Attitude for attitude sake" of lesser 90's content. I also grew up with 90's books. I like how they focus on Thunderbird deals with the inner conflict of his mutanthood and indigenous roots.
So cool to know there is some Apache Super heroes other then DC’s Apache Chief
It's cool that Nyla Rose helped work on this. She's teased she's gonna have ring gear relating to the character
Nice.
This comeback is genuinely important. Thanks for covering it, Joel!

Comic books and pro-wrestling, a combination as good as chocolate and peanut butter.
Yep,especially The Undertaker and the Ultimate Warrior.😊
Check out Daniel Warren Johnson's next preject then, an Image mini series called Do a Power Bomb

This thunderbird story sounds really awesome and badass also yay thunderbird got meet his brother and reunite with his grandma 👵 yay happy endings.

Ngl I originally read this as “Pornstars Reborn”
John actually reunited with his brother in #24 of the current new mutants series
(looks into it) Huh so he did, weird this books treats it like such a big moment.
Almost as if the writer of this book didn't care. More likely wanting to frame it from John's point of view.
Krakoan Age John

Xavier had the black body suit look decades before Maker was even created...
