My Vice McLaughlin

- Details:
Jaws are tool steel that is polished, hardened & tempered to 62 Rockwell. Then they’re blackened using a selenium process. They should never even show a mark where the hooks are gripped, & last a lifetime. The jaws are grooved (optional) for larger salmon hooks - Jim would suggest from size 8 up.
The head has 2 bearing races in it for easy rotation, and rotates 360 degrees. Stainless steel head & shafts through it. Delrin washers provide the friction, adjustable via the screw at the back of the head.
The stem, pillar & “C” clamp extension are also stainless steel with brass thumbwheel, and locking screws for the head & pillar. If you prefer a base this is aluminium, backed with 3mm neoprene to prevent scratching.
It’s all hand made - Not a CNC in sight, so can be adapted within reason. The usual changes are the length of stem, & some people want longer/shorter arms depending on how they tie. Left handed jaws are a common request.
Jim's vice our all hand made to order and modifications can be made on request. There is currently a waiting time - at the moment it’s about 6 weeks, but can be up to 12 weeks at times. Please free free to contact Jim at jimmcl@globalnet.co.uk placing “Jaws” or “Vice” in the subject field of an email

So nice to see hand made gear in this day and age Scott.👌👌👌
Couldn't agree more Bob 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Scott. A good demonstration on the workings of the vice. And your skills behind the vice and the very fact that Jim hand made this for you is brilliant. I used to work in a Foundry as a Moulder and appreciate the skills of producing by hand. Sadly a lot of those skills are now gone. The vice is worth every Penny. 🙂👍👍
Your absolutely right Neil, it hard to get handmade UK times and this vice will absolutely last a life time.
Superb good to know some people still have the skills to make things by hand these days
Absolutely Neil 👍🏻, this vice is definitely up there with the best
Very nice Scott, lovely hand made craftsmanship, which is rare now a days.
Couldn't agree more chum 👍🏻
Hi Scott, loved the video about the vice. So much so I’ve ordered one. 👍
Good man Scott, great vice you’ll not regret it. Happy tying 🧵🧵🧵
Nice vice. Scott it helps makes your beautiful flies. Tks.
Thanks Burton 👍🏻
That's a nice vice, I made my own vice 40 years ago, now I'm 66 I guess it will have to do me until I'm called upstairs.
Handmade last longer the machined David 👍🏻👍🏻
I've had my McLaughlin (an improved LAW) for two years. A thousand or so flys later I'm as delighted as on the day it arrived. The jaws are exactly the same extraordinary quality as the LAWs, and the rest is a LAW on quality steroids. I've tied #32 - #6/0 and it'll take larger if you require such things. Unlike the original LAW, it can be adjusted to provide exact level rotation. It is made to last a lifetime, and then be passed on to the next generation. Inevitably, there will never be many, because Jim (like Law) will never be able to supply the demand. Currently they are too cheap, but they will rise in price and end up being sold for shedloads of money by Edward Barder or Angling Auctions. These vises are beyond exceptional. Alternative vises are available, but none are its equal.
Fully agree Puccini 👍🏻
This looks like a great alternative to the Law vice. I recently purchased an FNF Talon vice which is similar. I like how this vice appears to have a machined recess for bearings whereas the FNF does not, well done! - a great vice just the same and I’m happy with it. However if you’re having a vice made to order, the one thing I’d like to mention as I’ve kindly mentioned with FNF is: For left handed tiers like myself, having the jaw tightening screw on the opposite side would be a great option!
I’m sure Jim makes vices for lefties Paul. The one thing with this vice is that it may be worth some money in years to come like the law, unlike mass produced vices. Just a thought 👍🏻
@@Scott_Jackson my thoughts as well, thanks for sharing!
@@paulcirone5038 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes great reviews.
Great vice Paul 👍🏻
I have an HMH vise, not the original LAW vise. Did you machine this vise yourself, or have someone else do it for you?
Great looking vise and one that should last a lifetime. I like the fact that the jaws can be tilted up.
Are you going to manufacture more?
Ron Cavalier
Ruskin, FL
Hi Ron, thanks for the comments and watching the videos 👍🏻 unfortunately this vice was manufactured by Mr Mclauglin, email address in the description under the video. If you have any further questions give Jim a shout 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you for the information. I will contact him
Ron C
👍🏻
Thank you Scott. I appreciate to breakdown and demonstration. I’m wondering the rotational housing has bearings or are they just bushings using lubricant?
Bushing’s 👍🏻👍🏻
@@Scott_Jackson Bearings!
Apologies @coasterbrookie Bearings.
It's very like the fnf talon vise.which is a law replica but still very expensive at nearly £600..how much does Jim charge for the vise?
Adam the FNF is fully machined my vice is hand made no CNC machining in sight. Jim email address is below the video, drop him an email about prices 👍🏻👍🏻
Have looked at getting these jaws for my Snowbee Waldron. The stem, jaw arm and spindle look identical to the Snowbee Waldron. Did Jim make those or is part of your vice a Snowbee Waldron? I´m interested in case anything goes wrong with my Waldron...
James, none of my vice is a snow bee Waldron, this is one of Jim’s vices. Jim will make you the jaws, feel free to send him an email. Contact details are in the description below this video 👍🏻👍🏻
@@Scott_Jackson Great looking vice... I enjoy your videos Scott. I don't watch many fly tyers repeatedly, but you're one of the ones that I do watch regularly. The other names on that list would pay you a compliment too.
@@jamesjames4652 James thank you for taking the time to watch, it’s much appreciated 👍🏻👍🏻. The vice is genuinely a work of art, I know there’s other vices much similar to the law but Jim vice is handmade 👍🏻👍🏻
I was wondering if you have the drawing specs, dimensions, since I'm a machinist I could make one of the same materials. Appreciated. Looks like Law though, good work....👍
Hi Paul, Sorry I wouldn’t have the specs 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Scott. Like your vice. Can I tell me what kind of money 💰 is involved 🤔
Malcolm, I have placed Jim’s email in the description under the video if you’d like to give him a shout. I think I paid £400 👍🏻
Who sells McLauglin vices?
Hi Peter, Jim email address in the description of the first video I up loaded.
Best Regards,
Scott
One helluva vise. I was certain that you were tying on a LAW. I'd love to get one of Jim's. I'm a lefty so I'll see what he could do for me...once I save up the coin, lol. No offense to HMH, FNF etc. but I'm not fully into them. I shouldn't judge a book by its cover but the jaws on those brands look clunky to me.
Lonewizzard, Jim will make a left hander for you no problem 👍🏻👍🏻🧵🧵
@@Scott_Jackson excellent, thank you!
Hi Scott I can’t seem to find the link
Should be in the description but I’ll have a look over the weekend 👍🏻👍🏻
