Curious choice of flower for this story. Chrysanthemum symbolize gratitude, happiness and love. Is it meant to mean Elisa should be grateful for what she has? Or is it symbolic of the old flowers being thrown out as if to say some old happiness she didn’t know she had or wanted was gone in place of the new sprouts? I am unsure. Perhaps I will listen again to get a better understanding.
Arguably both. But the saddness we feel when she discovers the things to which she has devoted so much time, attention and expertise discarded like garbage is what breaks our heart. Steinbeck knew the American spirit like no other author of his generation. He knew the unsung, uncelebrated, ignored and invisible life of the American woman when very few worked outside the home. The daily routines of cooking, cleaning and caring that came with an entire career of self effacement were relieved by the arts and artistry of women themselves. Sewing, quilting, needlework, and gardening became expressions of the soul. It wasn't her flowers that he discarded; it was so much more.

It definitely takes a few reads lol but I know what you mean. Sometimes literary fiction can feel uneventful but really tons of stuff is happening in this story. It just takes a while to be like ahhh lol so can relate for sure.
Tell us your alternate title for this story! Go!
The person who disliked definitely failed there test

Immediately know this wasn’t written by a woman by the “be breasts swelled passionately” line
Totally agree! These kinds of line are not far removed from something like "Her breasts breasted breastily."
this is torture
It's not that bad! Lol
If you find it boring, speed it up xD
Lol he talks so fast anyways

Lol I agree
I guess I like boring stories than… this was an interesting story
Once you’ve experienced these feelings and lived more of life these stories become haunting.
It's literature, not pulp fiction.

I don't understand a word
Explain.
Too "Simply Lit," maybe?
Nicely read but overwritten.
Thank you so much for listening and commenting! Steinbeck certainly has a unique style lol.
This is so boring omg
What actually happens--the action--is a little boring lol but there's SO much underneath the surface of this story and the prose is absolute poetry!
What did I just read? That was 25 minutes of nothing lmao

The reading is too fast, to enjoy Steinbeck’s words…
