  • I would hazard a guess that most guitarists will be familiar with single coil pickups that related to telecasters and Stratocasters and perhaps don’t have as much experience with the original single coils that Gibson released as early as the 1930’s. I would be one of those guitarists who have not really spent time on a P90 or ‘ soapbar’ pickup.
My friend Chris leant me his Ibanez AG73T which he had upgraded from humbuckers to to Warman humbucker sized P90 pick ups. I got to spend some time playing with the guitar and getting a sense of what P90’s bring to the mix.
    Takeaways:
    1) P90’s are just as noisy as Fender single coils that are not noiseless (60hz hum)
    2) P90’s seem to be very expressive with better dynamic range as the Fender pickups. The more I ‘dig in’ the more bite I found.
    3) The tone is phatter than that of Fender single coils but are still very articulate.
I found the actually guitar very playable and the neck is very similar to my PRS SE Starla so I was easily feeling at home with this guitar and it all looks cool too!
What are your thoughts? Would you encourage buying a P90 based guitar? Have you tried out the stacked hum-cancelling P90’s that are available?
    Let me know your thoughts.
    Thanks
    John
