I appreciate the way the video was structured. For a mediation student to observe the result of an actual conflict, it was referred at first to HR. HR brought the mediator in and initially had a one on one conversation with each party. The joint session was productive and the mediator asked good probing questions. Both parties were able to hear each other. I also appreciate the Mediator asking the parties what they would like them to share with HR. Well done....

I would like to know what involvement Trevor's manager had in the mediation process. They were clearly putting a huge amount of pressure on him, and ultimately were the cause of the conflict between Trevor and Sue. If senior management are not involved then the issue will not go away as Trevor will continue to be under undue pressure in future situations.

I think this became a very uncomfortable situation for both parties, but specially for Sue, because she was in a more "vulnerable" situation : She is pregnant , Friday was the only day she could spend time with her son and on top, Trevor was really rude to her, which made the confict became unnecessary personal. Trevor as a manager should always maintain a professional and respectful attitude with subordinated employees. It's understandable that he had a lot of pressure on his shoulders but that would never be a good reason to disrespect anyone.
I really liked how the mediator managed the conflict by first meeting them separately and make them put themselves into each others position. In the part where they meet together, what I'd have changed as a mediator, would be giving them turns in some delicate points (specially on what Sue had to say and Trevor interrupted as "that was not my intention").

Great Mediation video, has helped me with my assignment. Have taken heaps of notes from this video and will use this in my career to de-escalate conflict.

TLDR: Trevor wants Sue to work on Fridays. Sue wants to spend time with her son. Trevor wants to meet a deadline and is pushy about Sue working Fridays. A mediator is brought in to resolve the conflict. They have individual meetings then meet together as a group. The conflict is resolved.

I feel that right away, when Sue said she could do some later hours, and even come in early one of those days, it should've ended right there with a thank you very much from Trevor, and thus, the end of it. Obviously, it did not go that way. Trevor was being abrasive in regards to Sue's inabilitiy(choice) to not work Friday because of her Son. He needed to be reasonable, and take a step back. He let his emotions regarding the deadline at stake, get in the way of being rational and moral.

The camera man moves too much, I am already dizzy after watching this for a few minutes! A shame, because the context is quite good. The woman could have spoken more clearly.

Man I'm from the US and working off hours is kind of expected. You are so lucky.
