Here's a hint to try on tough enemies like the sack guys. While in hammer mode, press R2 + forward on the stick at the same time. This does a leaping strike with any weapon. Its a good gap closer, and gets you in there with little wind up. Also, back stabs are the cautious hunter's friend. Good job discovering the low ceiling over the stairs The white faced church guys have a long wind up. They are perfect for parrying practice. Remember: shoot at the top of an enemy's wind up
