    Thank you for posting such an inspiring video. I recently began dyeing fabric with natural elements and I must say I have truly fallen down the rabbit hole. I find myself paying more attention to the roadside weeds than I do to the road on my way to work each morning. I hope I don’t have to explain this to my husband when he is called upon to pull my car out of the ditch.

    I found it very relaxing to watch you positioning the leaves. I laughed when you said "herb robert", because until that moment I had thought wild geranium was something mysterious, instead in the Spring there is an endless supply of it growing in my garden.
    I had thought alum was necessary for this process, but I'm happy to see that it's not, as I would have to order it online. Thank you for this great demonstration.

    loved this video, Nicola. A good tip - I use an atomiser spray bottle with the water vinegar mix and spray it onto the paper. It's a lot easier for students to do then to dunk. and it doesn't matter what size your paper is.

    Thank you for such an easy and straightforward tutorial with very basic supplies that I already have around my house. I do need to find a pot, but that is a matter of taking a trip to one of my local thrift stores. I am new to "junk" journaling and wanted to try my hand at eco printing papers for a field notes type journal. I thought it would be more special to use foraged foliage from my property to include in this journal about the forest and woods.

    • @clasheen

      Absolutely Tracy, using your own eco printed paper to create a journal is a beautiful way of celebrating your own locally foraged vegetation.

    Thank you for this video! I can't wait to try this. I have dyed alpaca and wool yarn with onion skins and vinegar water, and found the red skins made green yarn! So much fun! My question is, could I include yarn or fabric in the water along with the paper bundles? Would they take longer than 2 hours or less? And what are you tying the bundles with, it looks like t-shirt yarn? Thank you in advance!

    • @clasheen
      @clasheen  Рік тому +1

      Yes, you can include fabric bundles in the pot when you are processing paper! Yarn too although I wouldn't leave it floating around or you run the risk of it shrinking. Wrap it up with leaves or onion skins in parchment paper and tie it tightly. The yarn is t-shirt yarn! You are so welcome! And you're absolutely correct, I use a process called the 'Dirty Pot' which is where I use my pot and rusty metal as a mordant to obtain such clear prints. I prefer this than using chemical mordants as I strive to keep my business as environmentally friendly as possible. Feel free to have a look through my other UA-cam videos to learn more about the method or join my public Facebook group where the members share their creations, build community and ask questions - facebook.com/groups/nicolabrown

    HI Nicola, thanks for your very generous sharing of knowledge. I've tried this for the very first time using your video here and am absolutely thrilled with the results. If you had time to answer this question, I'd be very grateful: how many times can I use the same pot of dirty water? I processed quite a few prints (maybe 10 small tile-sized prints, two at a time), and feel now that the water is getting too dirty? Do I get rid of that and start again? I'm adding only vinegar and a few rusty bits and onion leaves, by the way.

      Hi Rionach, the dirtier the better in relation to the pot liquid so work away!!! I'm delighted that you had fun and loved your results. You'll have to look at my bootcamp videos now and try with fabric!

      Hi Candace, I’m happy that you enjoyed the video! I specialise in eco printing without traditional powdered mordants, the colours may be different but it’s possible to achieve some wonderful results. With experience and practice I’ve identified which vegetation works best and how long to process the various bundles for to achieve the strongest results. All the fabric that I print using the ‘dirty pot’ (aka pot as mordant) method is fully machine washable and stands the test of time. My bootcamp videos are a good place to start if you would like to learn more! Here’s a link to the first of a 3 part series. ua-cam.com/video/TWY17lHdpQc/v-deo.html

    Thank you for good guidance. Is the ratio of water to vinigar important? You mentioned 500mg vinigar...in how much water?. Thanks

      The stronger the better I think but because I can't get vinegar easily where I live I usually dilute it. Just use what you have.

    Did you cut the sections apart to make cards? In otherwords, what happens after it is dried and ironed.

      I didn’t this time Hedy but you can...... and I often do! Just use the paper for whatever you want, it’s very strong once it’s fully dry.

    Hello Nicola. I eco print on paper and have tried many variations using either rusty water or powdered alum with various levels of success! I was very interested in the method you used here using 'metal plates'. Wondering what sort of metal they were?
    I tried to reproduce your method using cut down aluminium baking tins but sadly my results were very pale & uninteresting. I used, rose leaves, maple, oak, geranium on 300gm paper and added onion skins, avocado pits, gum leaves to the water. Paper was soaked in vinegar. Simmered for 2 hours between heavy tiles.
    Wondering where I went wrong? ( I'm in south australia, high summer here at present)
    Would be very grateful for your advice regards Ella

      Hi Ella, the plates that I referred to actually came from a recycle place in Canberra! They rust easily and that is why they work very well. Aluminium will not give you modification of colour in the same way, on paper or on fabric. Try to find some rusty metal, iron is best.

    I noticed you don’t use alum does vinegar do the same thing

    • @clasheen
      @clasheen  Рік тому

      Alum is a mordant and vinegar is a modifier so they don't do the same thing BUT, adding vinegar and rusty metal to an aluminium pot helps mimic the effects of a mordant in a more gentle way!
