One toxic employee nearly bankrupted my small business that was growing and thriving for 6 years prior to his full time employment. He was part time for 5 years and I failed to recognize that he was a parasite not a producer. Constantly proclaiming how hard they are working - CHECK Hoarding work he couldn’t hand it, refusing to collaborate with colleagues, hiding the work not getting done, and bottlenecking the workflow - CHECK Slandering other employees in and creating division and distrust- CHECK Creating and enforcing rules for others while not following those rules themselves- CHECK Never taking accountability for mistakes and lying about routine fires that could be put out until they become infernos- CHECK Driving away the other competent employees very quickly so you have false impression of loyalty and dependence on the toxic employee- CHECK It takes teamwork to produce greatness but only 1 toxic narcissist con artist to destroy an organization. It’s unfortunate that corporal punishment isn’t still legal for these situations because in the old days a toxic employee like this on a merchant ship would be keelhauled. Their toxic actions can quickly sink a ship and there are countless hauls rotting on the seabed to prove it.
