Elliot, I have been a Salomon rep in CO since 2012. I think you nailed this review. I skied the QST 99 everyday on ski patrol until the 99 became the 98. Since, I have now switched to the QST 92 for my daily driver. There were a couple seasons I entertained the idea of mounting the 92 but I never did. That's just what I did this season. Now, we're starting to see some snow storms roll in and soft snow... finally! Now, I have the new QST 98 and 106 ready to mount. Every season the 106 saw less than 10 days because I too never really agreed that the 106 was the one ski quiver for the exact reasons you mentioned. It saw less days because everyday in CO is not necessarily a pow day. I too like to arc around the resort on a narrower ski. The QST 99/98 is absolutely (in my opinion) a one ski quiver. If you can just have one. But, if you can have 3! They each excel in different and proper conditions. The 106 is definitely my go to powder ski. If you really want to ski a really good pow ski... try the Salomon Blank. I had it for one season and boy... that is a fun pow ski. Not necessarily the ski I want on groomers but that's not my point. I love that you love the 106 as much as you do. Please try the QST 92 on the hardpack. I think you'll really enjoy it. Keep it up!

I just got 106s this season and was on these at Wolf Creek yesterday. There were lots of areas with 3-4’ in the trees where I actually thought I could justify getting a Blank. 92s are my daily.

@@SpudDood Apparently! Here's the issue... I don't have either skis right now and I would ski the longer of skis because I'm 6' 2". I think Elliot would ski shorter. I can't just buy those skis for the review as much as I would like to. I get a great discount but I still have to pay for my skis even though I sell and promote them. I'm a tiny little fish in the Salomon ocean.

I have about 12 days on the 92 this year in our anemic west ski season. Tons of man made, ice and some fresh groomed packed. It’s amazing and really easy to ski. It’s a carving ski. I ski with a lot of seasoned skiers and they all ask me about them. I’ve been on Stormrider 95’s, this year and last year Rustler 9’s, qst 98, and a handful of others and the qst 92’s rate near the top for me.

Been skiing the 2021 QST 106 as a one ski quiver/daily driver for the last 3 years (Breck is my home mountain). Great ski all around! Love it!
Can get up on edge really well on hardpack. Feel quick and nimble in the bumps and trees. Can power through chop really well. Nice and forgiving but still stable. And float on powder surprisingly well (compared to the Rocker2 122).

Agree that it can be a daily driver and I have the 2020 version. Love them in all terrain assuming anything more than groomers or hard pack. As I'm working on my carving I would say they have a limit (by design) as the tail washes out when really pushing hard on groomers. I realized they are not designed for carving on hard pack, but as a Colorado skier I use these as my daily for four years now. Love Salomon's QST line period!

I never tought of ski lines as having a TRUE original and others were derived from it but it makes so much sense. That would explain why the experience is so different on enforcer 94 and 100. And why Black Crows skis performs so well overall as there are no lines : every ski is its own thing.
Also, just tore my old boots last weekend. It felt like I couldnt carve anymore, my turns would washout on my left leg... Went inside, saw they were broken and done for hahaha. Received my new Lange Shadow 130 yesterday and already pinpointed points to aleviate (how nice is bootfitting seriously !? How did I ski for 20 years without this ?). Hoping to shred with them on friday !

Thanks for the review. How do you think these skis would do for a bigger skier? I'm 6'6", 225. I consider myself a very good skier with 60 years of experience (yes, I'm 65). I'm getting a 106 with 189cm. I also considered the Blank but I was concerned that I would get a little more "tired" with such a big ski. My daily is also a Maverick, although I went with the 95.

Very different from the Mav 105's more surfy and you can sit back on them a bit more where as the Mav 105's are more forward and carving oriented. Great idea! I think a long term review would be a great video for this summer.

I have a pair of aging DPS Wailer 112 Hybrids and was getting thrown around by skied-out powder today. The variable snow density made it really hard to keep my balance. I need something more stable, a bit heavier. Maybe this is it? Because yeah untracked powder is nice but 80% of the day is on tracked-out mess but I still want to have fun.

    • @adventures_overland_and_water
      @adventures_overland_and_water 9 місяців тому +1

I was on 10+ yr old DPS 112 Wailer hybrids and moved to the 106 QST Echos this year. I'm in AK and tour 100% for my turns. Been very happy with the Echos. They're not quite as floaty as the 112's, but close. I sometimes wish they had the bigger DPS front shovel and an earlier rise in way deep stuff. But they do really well in the soft as a whole, and are far better in the variable conditions. I was looking for lighter, more versatile, and slightly narrower vs my DPS. When I do get in the backseat, they seem to be more forgiving vs my DPS. Very happy with them. I've set them up with ATK bindings and they def feel way lighter on the uphill too; approx 325 grams less per foot for skis/bindings, and I have much lighter skins too vs my DPS. Haven't skied them in spring time wetter snow, but so far so good.

I just did a side by side demo with the QST98 and The Unleashed 98 and the QST won hands down. The biggest difference was the conditions where we had a little "stick" from some mixed precip before I got up the hill (Mt Bachelor) the 98s just slowed down hitting the sticky stuff more exposed to the sun and the Unleashed hit the parking brake like my Enforcers do. I don't think you'll be that impressed with the Unleashed. It's just a little brother to the Enforcer which for where I live is a great ski when you are going between crud to ice. I never worry about losing and edge with that. This is a perfect companion to the Enforcer or any hard driving hard conditions ski. @@RicketySkiReviews

I have skied this model QST 106 for two years in Utah! I wouldn't call it just a "powder ski." But, it is a "soft snow ski," unless the powder is very deep or the snow is very heavy and clumpy! It is surfy and turns quickly; it's fabulous in the trees!! I also have the previous model of QST 106 with the orange sidewalls. It is more versatile in varied conditions; its a real crud buster when the snow is heavy! It also holds an edge better in firm conditions. With a more even flex and stiffer back end, its more stable, especially if you put significant pressure on the tails when skiing out of a turn in firmer snow. No ski is best for all conditions. But, I would pick the older model for hard or highly variable conditions! The newer model is absolutely incredible in soft snow!! Lastly, a small point: I think the newer model is closer to 180 cm in length than 182.

Yeah they carve similarly with that comfortable turn, but are definitely surfier and float much much better. Slower turn initiation but that's kind of to be expected with the width.

My home mountain is Mammoth Mountain in California. My current quiver consists of: 2017 K2 85ti (170 cm) groomer, 2017 Volkl Mantra (170 cm) great crud buster, 2023 Salomon QST 92 (168 cm) daily driver. Any length recommendation and suggestion you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

I would 100% say 106 they have plenty of float, are super fun and don't leave you wanting when on a groomer or you only get 10-15cm of new.
In short you'll ski them more than you think. Blanks are great but how many 30cm+ days a year will you ski? And the will only be marginally better in pow and not as good everywhere else.

Hey buddy -- I also bought a new set of QST98s for this season. I was able to take them out on hardpack earlier this week and I can echo that these skis were an absolute joy. Super fun. I had jumped from a directional 80mm underfoot to these 98s and I can say that while I was expecting learning curve, they carved and handled like a thinner front side ski, potentially even better than my 80s lol. Biggest thing I noticed was being a bit more "slidy" under foot when standing still and at low speeds, but at standard speed they just felt super familiar right away on the first run. Very impressive, it was a very seamless transition for me, and the benefits were instantly noticeable, no edge catching, better pivoting, floated over crud, easy to put on edge. etc. They make me feel super confident all through the turn and I can't wait to take them out west next week and challenge them off piste, glades, trees, powder, etc.
In a previous review of the 98 I think Elliott mentioned the one drawback on them was they can get squirrelly if you pull them out of a turn early without finishing to initiate a different turn. (Like in a tight steep corridor for example) I actually tried to replicate that phenomenon but didn't seem to notice, yet. Will keep trying to push these but overall highly satisfied with the purchase and I have Salomon and moreso, Elliot @RicketySkiReviews to thank. Kudos and keep up the excellent work.

I think people are too concerned with metal in skis. There's way better construction materials and approaches to make a ski perform well, and for most people, will create a larger sweet spot. I think the QST is a great example of that. Ripstick is also in that category.

I imagine you are mostly catering to folks who primarily ski groomers, but it would be nice to hear you, as well as other ski reviewers, provide more context when reviewing skis. I'd agree this ski is not a daily driver if you primarily ski groomers. However, this ski could be great for someone who prioritizes off-piste performance above groomer performance. There is just so much that goes into the decision of what type of ski to get from location, style of skiing, performance prioritization, etc. that all go into determining what ski would be best for someone...I'd just like to hear ski reviewers address that a bit more.

First was a binding ripping from the plate, second was a rip that started at the tip of the ski where the topsheet begins to bevel toward the sidewall.
