It ain't just vocal range, it's the experimentation too. Patton is the only six-octave singer I've heard whose range of creativity matches their vocal range. He never stops working, has dozens of bands, side projects, and collaborations, and every project has its own distinct sound and reason for existing. Some of them, he doesn't even sing words, just grunts and shrieks and howls in ways you've never heard a human being sound. He does everything. He's a bona fide musical genius.
I think this is one of the things that makes Patton such an incredible artist, he just doesn't seem to have that filter between his brain and his mouth and he'll do anything to make the specific sound he thinks needs to be there. I compare him to an actor who immerses themselves in a role to such a degree they risk their sanity to become the character, or a painter who uses anything they can get their hands on to create something completely new without regard for tradition or what people will think. He just seems to be so incredibly free-spirited in what he does and I think that's the mark of a true artist who's overcome ego. It also helps that he has an incredible voice capable of so much.
e.g. Kyo from Dir en Grey has roughly the same range as Mike and they're stylistically pretty similar (plus Kyo is better in really heavy vocals than Mike is, in e.g. growls and all kinds of gutturals)
One thing I'll say about Patton, is that his genius is a subtle genius. Sometimes it can take a few listens before you realize what you're hearing. The more I listen to his work, the more I find that blows me away. Same goes for Faith No More, the other members are talented as fuck. My fave bassist of all time is Billy Gould. Dude is a boss.
Exactly! What he said! They haven't even started to dig deep into patton, like grn patton vs x-ecutioners or a perfect place or milk cult or john zorn deep 😉

I think you guys have a hell of a task on your hands. From a personal standpoint, I think Mike Patton is probably the most technically gifted of them all, Maynard is the one who probably consistently has that emotional connection while singing, Devin is as good a mix of technique and emotional connection as you can get without quite being as consistent with either aspect as the previously mentioned singers. To me, Devin's pitched screams and consistency live put him in top place and that's just a personal opinion. He's got the belting it out part down, but then goes into that breathy shit. He can do the operatic stuff, he can scream like a banshee, or he can sound like he asphyxiating. Ha also raps; surprised you havn't found that stuff yet.
@Shan5 thank you for getting them pointed in a direction other than FNM or MrB. Mondo Cane is his homage to '50s and '60s Italian pop music. It's a trip.
Up up down down left right left right B A select start
You guys are awesome for this, I'm a huge fan of Mike Patton🤟 check out a project he did with The Dillinger Escape Plan called Irony is a dead scene
Mondo Cane is the Italian group with an orchestral feel. He learned Italian for the girl he married, then he performed with these guys. The whole concert is great. Shows his diverse range and vocal talent......check out the whole concert........ua-cam.com/video/YRjKlZiGHQI/v-deo.html
Mike Patton is god
It’s Italian, from his Mondo Cane album, a collection of 50s Italian songs
One word, one thing, one amazing epic evolution... "California"
Tomahawk and fantomas... god hated a coward and pop1 are bangers!
While the songs they've reacted to so far are great (i mean...Patton IS god) I was getting disappointed at the suggestions because they're all small parts of the larger whole. I was about to suggest one of the compilation videos that mash together a bunch of his projects ;)
Now...
Jane's Addiction - 3 Days
Kyuss - Gardenia & Demon Cleaner
Blind Melon - Tones of Home
Yeah I’m not sure if people thought they had to suggest a FNM song... or if they’re just more attached to FNM than any of his other musical ventures. I was getting frustrated too! Glad the guys took my advice 😊👍🏽
@@ShanLH5 I'd venture that most people couldn't put patton to Bungle or Dead Cross, much less Fantomas, Tomahawk, or any of his other projects (I've been a Zorn fan a hot minute and LOVE their collabs especially ❤️)
@@Kevin_Fiol yesss man he does so many interesting things! To be fair I can understand how someone would have trouble keeping up with his million and 2 projects 😆 but there’s soooo much more to explore, it would be a shame to ignore or dismiss anything outside of FNM.
While Mike is younger than Johnny Depp, its only by a few years. Dude is a warlock or something though cuz he stays lookin young.
Cornell, Plant, Staley, Maynard, Hetfield, Ann Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Steven Tyler, Freddy Mercury, Phil Anselmo, Adam Lambert would be some of my nominees
There is no competition in here. Mike Patton is the best musician of all times.
The only correct term for a singer with such a range is... Mike Patton
vacalist (my list)
1-kyo(dir en grey/sukekyo)
2-mike patton
3-devin townsend
Mike Patton is great and has a wide range and different styles. So does Ronnie Radke, and he can scream and rap too. React to both versions of I'm Not a Vampire. You will see his range. Both versions of the Drug in Me is You also shows his range. Champion or Rollling Stone are good ones to react to also.
