I am one of the cousins he came to when he moved to Hamilton. Mum only ever told us that Waka chose to stay in Wairoa and never had a chance to ask him what happened. Wow cuz, I never knew what you were going through. His story of resilience, loss, strength, defeat and eventual redemption is astonishing. It’s amazing to see this, thank you for recording his story and sharing this to the world. Love you cousin and continue on your journey!

The smile on his face when he talks about his family in Hamilton is heart warming. Good dude. Never give up on people in prison. I good friend of mine had spent 36 years in prison in total. He went there because of some bad choices he made due to drugs and alcohol. When he got out for the last time he worked to change his life. He totally turned himself around and was a pillar of our community when he finally died at around 80 years of age. The judge who sent him to prison the last time, worked hard to get him out. He and this judge became good friends. His name was Richard Briggs from Athens, Ohio.
This is Wairoa I was born here. When I was young I couldn't wait to spread my wings and when my kids grew up I came home and enjoyed our mum before she passed. Growing up in the 70s in my hometown I was lucky no matter who was around our uncles looked after us. We were safe and loved. Playing until dark, going over the river to our aunties, down the river 247 no drama. Now in the year 2024 our place is still here. Astetics mean nothing. Our parents and grandparents instilled in us a love that tethered us to this beautiful place. Marae, mahi and community.
Aroha ki te takata, ki tetahi ki tetahi. Treat others the way you like to be treated ❤ walk tall, stand staunch under the protection and Love of Yahwe. Bless you Brothers in Christ, hi aue hi!
