You might think the way mammals eat is pretty simple: They open their mouths and bite the thing they want to eat. But for some marine mammals, feeding strategies can include suction or vortices!

My Ex used to suction feed.
Read this as "Why Maine animals suck" and I was all prepared for an in depth look at terrible animals in Maine
Stephen King Approves this comment
Same here 😅😂
@@oucyan That made me laugh! Thank you.
@@oucyan excellent comment!!
What is maine?
And here I thought this was going to be 6 minutes of dunking on marine life.
I came here angry and ready to tussle on behalf of my sweet cetaceans…was pleasantly surprised
I, too, might so have done... yet I was saved by the thumbnail. The water spilling into the giant mouth was enough....
Hank: "AND ANOTHER THING!"
I'm halfway through and I just realized...
@@elih6087 same lol
Because the Ocean is soup, and the sea doggos go *slurp*
Out here spittin facts.
Shlurp*
How high are you? Lmao
Scientifically accurate
Metaphysically true
I completely misunderstood the title, I was like “dang what did marine mammals do? 😭”
that was the point of the title
They s u c k
As a human I can confirm, jetting has been observed in me when I fool around and decide to make a jet of water with my mouth just because I can.
This is only acceptable clickbait title and whoever came up with this deserve an enormous raise
Well the title certainly is eye catching
"Okay, so charging at your food face-first isn't exactly the same as chowing down on a cupcake." *LOL!*
(although I'm sure there are two-year-olds at birthday parties who might beg to differ)
I mean, I MAY have dived at my food face first! Don't be judging.
bruh im drinking a protein shake while watching this and when he said tongue depression for suction i immediately became self aware of how i was drinking it
Yeah, I just discovered that I can totally suck while still breathing both in and out through my nose!
@@bhami Keep that handy if you ever develop a smoking habit lol
@@bhami well i mean if you drank water by breathing in there would be problems
I was genuinely over 4 minutes into the video before I realized that the title doesn't have the figurative meaning "why marine mamals are stupid idiots" but just its literal meaning
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they live rent free.
I am way too childish to make it through this video without laughing
*sigh*.... same.
"It's mostly the tongue and the throat doing the suc- THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!!!
yeah imagine what mermaids could do
It took me a second to get the title. I was like "WHAT!? NO, SAVE THE WHA- Ohhhhh baleen feeders right right"
Mammals. This is so cool. By the way, I have difficulty communicating because I had a stroke in Broca’s area, the part of the brain that controls speech. 2/8/2021 but I lived again. (My wife helped me compose this.)
oh that's recent! Have you seen Sarah Scott? Keep at it, the brain can rewire quite a bit if you're diligent and insistent with retraining it. Best wishes! and thanks, bear's wife, stay awesome
A fact about how marine mammals eat is literally my bumble bio because it’s so interesting to me 😆
Maybe they inhale their food, but do they at least have good enough manners to chew with their mouths closed?
When I thought that the title was going to be about Hank bullying Cetaceans.
Good show! I never really thought about marine animals needing to adapt from chewing to suction feeding but it was definitely very fascinating.
Thank you again Hank. This was exactly what I needed while eating dinner. 😊
This title rocks, and actually "sucked" me in. I had to click it, and I'm happy I did. TY for your contribution!
1:57 that’s what she said
I would charge straight at a cupcake face first to eat it. Drawing it in via suction is definitely an option too.
Well that's cool, didn't expect scishow to publish a report on the lab I'm part of today
Imagine giant quadruped fish who vacuum the air for bugs
Mudskippers use water to vacuum bugs on land (no tongue for swallowing)
Tsar Roomba dog
As a long-time diver, I didn't find this surprising. I've been "jetting" water out of my mouth for years. I've eaten grapes under water without drinking the salt water that surrounds them using that same process. Press the grape against the roof of your mouth while your regulator sort of bobs in your mouth and water is pressed out. You do swallow a bit of air but it's not too far a stretch from what seals must be doing. And honestly, I've never met a seal with flatulence.
"charging at your food face first isn't exactly the same as biting a cupcake"... wait really? it isn't??😂
Nice title HA I was concerned you were just gonna hate on some of the coolest animals ever
Love this but it's a missed opportunity to show off the hyoid apparatus that allows marine mammals to really suck since it looks like t-rex arms on the skeleton, and also some crabeater and leopard seal teeth that allow them to spit the water out without loosing tiny food. So many more cool pictures. Weird looking marine mammal bones could be a whole new video.
1:54 "You might mostly be thinking about your lip when you're sucking "milkshake" through a "straw", but while those help, it's mostly the tongue and the throat doing the sucking" 😭
Hank i love that shirt. i'm wearing a nearly identical shirt and seeing you wear it affirms to me that i've made the right decisions in wardrobe to channel that chill science dad that you inspire me to be. thanks for teaching me the coolest things for me to pass on to my kiddos! :D
Loved the subtle shade throwing on crypto
I have a joke, a swimmer in the ocean sees a bunch of fish, swimming to the surface, just beneath him, once they get to the surface they start flopping around, and he's like hahaha oh it tickles......*GULP*, WELL, now he knows how Jonah felt, maybe he could run down the length of the whale until he's all pooped out 😂
@1:14 : I'm pretty sure (but can't immediately confirm) that some birds, such as hummingbirds, do exactly that when they eat, for example, mosquitos and other small insects. The beak, being wider near the base of the beak, is opened rapidly and this allows even agile flying bugs to be caught via suction.
In the 2019 documentary, Amazing Dinoworld, in the second episode: "The World of Sea Monsters", show how the mosasurus (progntenhodon) could suck the prey with the jaws inherited from its ancestors similar to the Varanids (Lizards monitor). in your opinion they have "sprayed" the water into excesc.
Guessing it has to do with evolving for best energy efficiency depending on environment/type of prey, etc.
Hank, you're a champ 💪
I will remember this next time McDonalds doesn't give me a straw with my milkshake.
Cool, thanks!
If I didn’t see the Humpy in the thumbnail & immediately know this was about feeding habits, I woulda been salty so quick 😂💜🐋 There are also a few sharks that suck(tion feed) as well 😊
We use jetting, just usually with hot food.
Haven't seen most of the vid yet but I'm guessing it's because they don't have thumbs
Thanks... You figured out how to clear my pen when it's clogged...
Ramming directly into your food is not the same thing as eating a cupcake? Challenge accepted
I don’t know, I thing running face first into a cupcake is proper etiquette!
Nice video

Pygmy Sperm Whale: "Are you done? Can I move?"
Biologist: "Dude, I'm not taking a simple picture here. I'm sketching you!"
Pygmy Sperm Whale: *heavy sigh*
I like the crypto to casino analogy
Always good to learn more about sucking.
My nightmare is being vacuumed by a whale shark's mouth.
what a brilliant title!
This video title sparked the cetacea-sapien war.
The treaty was broken...
Mentioning crypto and following it up with gambling was a pretty good subtle dig.
My heart broke when Hank started promoting crypto currencies.
hydraulically jetting facts
That's what you do when you see a cupcake is it?
I think we've identified and isolated the problem.
Now the next step is to work on it, tubby.
Interesting!
I'm quite certain that, given enough time, that there'd eventually be multiple species with an evolutionary solution to eating a cupcake.
Hi Hank!
“It’s mostly the tongue and mouth doing the sucking.”- Cardi B
Now how do they handle straws?
Also smoothies and boba
1:18 Excuse me? When you say that actinopterygian fish make up half of all vertebrates, I certainly hope you meant in marine life!
I know that drinking truly pure water will sap the nutrients out of your system.
But what's the science behind how/why that happens?
Industry myth to sell mineral water, if something sounds fishy google it!
Love the video, but by God that cupcake clip in the beginning made me uncomfortable on a level I wasn't expecting.
you sir have clearly never been in the same room as me and a cupcake!
Well, isn't the filter-feeding of sperm whales (plankton being strained out by baleen) a type of suction feeding?
Sperm whales eat squid, primarily.
I think you mean baleen whales. Sperm Whales eat mainly squid
I suspect many of us would prefer to suck food into our mouths from several inches away were we given that option.
I blame evolution for connecting the food tube and the breathing tube to the same throat: doesn't matter as much when you are a fish, but can be problematic when you leave the water.
I hope the harbour seal test checked the seals weren't aware of the test... cause they'll just mess with you. Maybe you'll need to retest and give them more food, good enough excuse to screw results
My precious sea otters better come out well on the other side of this video!
Question: Do all marine mammals have to drink fresh water? I know manatees do but what do whales and dolphins do?
Oh my! What a dork!!!
I mean that in the best way possible.
Alt Title: Why Marine Mammals go from Suck to Blow.
are you assuming I don't suck food in like a vacuum cleaner
Aint u da guy from crash course😃
3:56 I think this is a sea lion
The kid eating the cupcake was cute.
Any mammal in the USMC is a Marine mammal.
With a title like this, I was expecting a whale diss track....
Alriiiiight
Are hippos land mammals at the early stage of evolving back into marine mammals, or are they in the late stages of evolving into land mammals? Hmm…
the marine mammals ain't gonna like this one
Science never sucks
It’s like smoking a cigar.
Am I the only one making crazy faces and strange breathing types while watching this video?
Yes.
How many takes on this video, Hank? Did you make it straight through without laughing? I didn't.😉😁🤣
1:59 Take notes.
You know who you are...
or you can throw your mouth at food like the slingjaw wrasse
They don't suck they filter 😏
Probably the most animal friendly science experiment there is 😂
SciShow
😂 hydraulic jetting
Whales are beasts of the ocean. We can't study them when we store them in tanks smaller than SeaWorld's parking lot.
Hey! At least some of them blow…
Jello shots.
Don't you dare say that my beloved marine mammals suck!
Yeah ,
That and they don't have hands👐🤗
I suction feed popcorn
Wait did Scishow just advertise crypto currency as a side hustle? Wow I expected better from you guys.
I find this very landist
