  • A (shaky) video tour of Lightning Ridge in 1988, courtesy of my late father, David Gawthorpe. I believe he filmed this with his new toy, a Sony Video-8 Camcorder, to show his family at Christmas '88.
This isn't a 'normal' IDU video, this is just an opportunity to archive a piece of Lightning Ridge history for posterity and the fun of it.
    Elephants in the room:
    - I've edited the video a bit. There was a lot of crazy ground shooting and super shaky cam sections that were just hard to watch.
    - I've censored a few names that were mentioned, just to ensure privacy.
    - I've also removed a few uncouth bits of commentary.
    - Oh, yeah. Cancer sucks. Whack the donate button: www.cancer.org.au
    Thank YOU for watching.
Your subscription would be appreciated, but...y'know, no pressure. Only if you think I've earned it.

Amazing ... great visual record/ a tea time capsule of historical value.
Even the car squeaks & rattles brought back fond m memories.

Thanks for sharing this great great video, I went on many memorable father son trips to the Ridge to see dads mate in the 80’s and 90’s. Cancer got my dad too. I’m at the ridge now with my 2 sons. Love this place.
Btw I’m guessing that’s a squeaky ford suspension?

You’re very welcome Murray! I have some old film footage from 1975 that’ll be coming soon, once I’ve finished some historical fact-checking on some of the things in the footage! The Ridge in the ‘90s was the best place on Earth. Thanks for commenting! 😁👍

it took a moment to zero in on where the video started but once I saw the Opal cave I worked it out. Its so cool to see Burt Smiths house still there. I look back now and recall the old house that was opposite the Anglican Church back in the early Eighties. Its such a shame those old huts were pulled down. This bought back so many memories, thank you for sharing mate.

Dent Gardiner It’s amazing both how much has changed, and how much is still the same! Thanks for the comment, Dent - much appreciated. 👍

opal towns in australia are big part of australian history.it is good to keep this kind of videos.i was in l.ridge in mid 90s working in bowling club as a kitchen hand and doing some mining.it is a shame you can not show the video from inside the club.it would be interesting to see some familiar faces.thanx for the video

The first three words that appeared in my mind were; Condolences, Awesome and Priceless. And of course, the humour was right up my alley. Since I was 18 that year this was filmed, I had big plans to travel to Australia to study, it did not happen. I became a carpenter apprentice here at home in Norway.
Lightning Ridge is my dream place to travel to. Hope to see you ;)
And I recognized almost all the cars from your movie. My first cars were the Ford Taunus and the Opel / Vauxhall Ascona-77-80? I thought I saw a venom green vauxhall ...
Would you like to say a big hello to Justin-Black Opal Direct, if you see him :)
    Greetings Kenneth Prospecting Norway!
