Wait, Battle City never had an NA/european release? I had no idea, I played a bootleg cartridge of it as a kid (I'm polish, and it was on some famiclone, in late 90's) and it was one of my favourite childhood games growing up, especially played in coop with my older brother. It was also first game I ever played that had a freaking level editor, so it was also memorable for this reason. I mean, that explains why I have never seen anything about it in the youtube retro scene. I assumed it was just obscure. Also yeah, this hack seems to be just a simple palette swap - I guess it makes it harder since you can't tell terrain as easily apart?
I actually did play Battle City as a kid... I had one of those Bootleggy plug-and-play consoles when I was young that had a ton of NES games on it, including Battle City, and I remember playing this game and even making some (crappy) custom levels on it, so I have some weird nostalgia for it. Never did get very far in it, though.
Damn that tank game brings back memories. In Poland we had the "Funstation" which looked like a Playstation, but with a cartridge slot for bootlegged NES games. This game was mighty fine. I also remember the Jackie Chan game fondly, but it had Marios sprite instead so I never knew it was a Jackie Chan game. Good times.
I did play Battle City Tanks when I was a kid. My neighbors had a copy and let me play once. I lost miserably because I didn't know the rules. To this day I am not entirely sure about what this game was and what was the goal.
In fact, Battle city was very popular in Russia because pirates were selling this game with our variant of famicom-Dendy. Pretty interesting story with this console. You can even find 2hour film about it called "Проклятие Серого слоненка". Oh, and also we have mother 1+2 on gba fully translated......yeah...
I'm quite confident that Battle City actually was released in the USA on NES. Also it is based on a 1980 Namco arcade game called Tank Battalion. (Y'know, Namco, makers of Pac-Man, Galaga, and the Tower of Druaga)
While Battle City never left Japan officially, it was ported all over the US on those NES multicart games that started coming out in the late 80’s-early 90’s (and are still made today surprisingly enough), and I’ve heard a few older adults who grew up in the 80’s tell me they had fond memories playing Battle City and taking turns designing their own arenas using the editor mode. Those multicarts are usually a treasure trove of Japanese games. Goonies, B-wings, and TwinBee are also commonplace on those bootleg Nintendo carts.
I played Battle City as a kid. I knew a friend that had a bootleg NES cart with 100+ games on it and this game was included. I spent the rest of my childhood looking for a Battle City cart. It wasn't until adulthood when I discovered it was Famicom only. Go figure.
Fun fact: in that Banjo-Kazooie Rom hack, the music that plays is a beta version for Frezeezy Peak. So, in a way, Grant Kirhope gave music to that world. (I also really like some elements of the Beta music but the Final one is still great!)
I played Battle City in one of those weird ass PS1 (or PS2, I don't remember) compilation games with dozens of Nes and Snes games with a lot of Super Mario Bros hacks.
I've actually played Battle City before on a plug and play system called the Mega Joy. Which was actually just an N64-esque controller that you would plug in.
Kinda late.... But I loved Battle City as a kid, one of my favorites, I owned an NES clone and bought a bootleg cartridge that had a bunch of games, Battle City included... Loved the map editor
I had a "polystation" that you would put different cartridges in for a shit ton of games on each cartridge. One of them had battle city. My version you could build your own levels, so idk if it was legit.
Let's just hope we won't get a late Easter ROM hacks video. Jokes aside, I don't mind late Christmas shenanigans, so long as they are entertaining. Happy New Year!
Battle City! :D When I started discovering un-imported NES games, it was one of my favorites. I was so surprised that it never made it overseas, it's one of those cute classic arcade style games that is just simple and fun.
Omg i actually played (and would still like to play at my grandmas house cuz my dads bro who lives there has it) battle city just not the christmas version and actually made some custom levels.. its in english and everything
1:19 Fun Fact: I actually played this game when I was a child. Not at my place though, but I very vividly remember playing it during a christmas party at my neighbours's place, I even distinctly recall that I used to just either make stages based on location I knew, like my school or a park I liked, or just surround my goal... eagle... emblem thingy with indestructible iron walls, like the cheap baby I was. I also remember that I had to select this game from a list, in a menu, before playing, and since my neighbour told me that after I played the whole day with it, it no longer worked (something for wich I felt awfull for the longest time), I'm led to believe that I probably played on one of those cheap bootleg plug and play. Made even more believable by the fact that it all happened around 1998, so around the death of the SNES and the rise of the Playstation and the N64, so the idea that my neighbours would've had an NES in display is a bit odd to me.
Okay, so, reading all the comments, it seems that pretty much every single person here that played this game did it either on bootlegs "101 games in 1" thingys. "Battle City" was really popular amongst bootleg makers it seems, who knew?
Of course this video is a week late! Wouldn't be a AntDude holiday if we weren't the last people on the internet celebrating. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone!
Oh shit! I actually remember that second rom hack! My father had gotten me and my brother a hacked cartridge for the nes with, like, a thousand games on it. I sometimes played it against my dad. I tended to lose.
I have never heard of most of these and it's pretty surprising since usually when I watch these types of videos, I already know most of them. Also, Happy Belated Christmas and New Year.
I always thought battle city was a famous game? because it is really funny, the multiplayer is even better. If I recall correctly it even have a custom level maker
Well there are bigger rom hacks being made right now for Banjo-Kazooie like Banjo-Dreamie, Banjo-Kazooie Returns, as well as Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Revenge Redone.
I actually played Battle City on NES as a kid. It was on a bootleg multigame cartridge with a cartoon fox or a wolf on the front dressed up as a musketeer. It's a pretty fun game from what I remember.
Fun fact. Super Mario Xmas had a romhack of its own, called Super Mario Xmas Re-Kringled. It tried to make the levels better, and changed the sprites a bit more. I actually liked the idea but couldn't stand the level design. And some of the sprites looked crap. I also hated how this bad romhack was actually being sold on repro sites. So I started modifying it myself, calling it Re-Re-Kringled. I never finished it, sadly. Lost my pc before I could. I still have the unfinished hack on a hard drive though. I had worlds 1-4 completely remade to match the original SMB a bit better, also using Mario 2 and Gina Sisters for level design ideas. And I remade a ton of the sprites from scratch (especially those awful 2.5d ice block tiles). I might have to start it back up one day if I ever get a new pc.
Kaze is the only SM64 hacker these days, he's the best at it, but his biggest problem is that he's a speed runner and refuses to alter SM64's physics to make them less floaty, which makes the games hard as hell
A few years back, a buddy of mine got one of those "101 games in 1" things, and there was a bootleg version of battle city on it. We played it for hours.
This is awesome! I wish you could do this more often, but i know how much work these videos take! (HOWEVER, if your searching for a new hacking topic, you HAVE to do a video on Kirby! I know your a fanboy of his, but we need to see the the pink puffball get his fair share of weird!)
I played that tank game, it came over on those "yellow card machines" to europe, which were playing famicom and nes games. I remember one I played was called "the terminator 2000" hahhaha
Battle city was one of the most popular games for Dendy (NES/Famicom clone)...practically nobody in Russia knew about NES system back in 90s...and funniest thing is that this Dendy system was advertised all over Russian TV as official console :)
R.I.P Game - Ant Dude
The last death of 2016.
My dad and uncle played Battle City when they were teenagers.
Technically, it never left Japan, but nothing stands in the way of a Chinese bootleg.
Also, that ROM hack doesn't look that different from the original...
Battle city maked my childhood :^)
Its a good game for its time , I loved the hell out of it
I, in fact, did play battle city as a kid,and im not joking,it was one of my favorite nes/famicom games to play as a kid

Pretty sure saying "hardcore gamers" is the quickest way to make it so that no one takes you seriously
Dracomut I hardcore game Minecraft and club penguin
Please. Clearly, you just need a little addendum to make the world take you even less seriously:
" *us*, hardcore gamers "
Most hardcore game ever
Club penguin

Battle City is Awesome! Pretty much every kid from Eastern Europe called it "The tank game". One of the most popular games for the Famiclone. :)
Super Mario xmas played Tetris music because that was a russian Christmas tune.
I played Battle City when I was a kid. I ended up playing it using one of those weird plug-in-play controllers with a 100+ NES/Famicom games on it.

"And the POW block says 'HO! HO! HO!'!"
"... Or is it calling me a ho?"
Battle City was a popular game in Poland. In years 1990-2000 Famiclones named "Pegasus" were sold and this game was on every "999999 in 1" cartridges.
The enemy at 7:56 is actually an enemy from Metal Slug 6 called "Scavenger".
Happy New Year Antdude!!! I'm so glad I found your channel this year and I expect to see some great things in 2017... cheers from California!!!
I played battle city as a kid. It was amazing. Only downside is that weird sound your tank makes while moving

Well there are bigger rom hacks being made right now for Banjo-Kazooie like Banjo-Dreamie, Banjo-Kazooie Returns, as well as Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Revenge Redone.
I played Battle City as a kid. It was included on one of those 100 in one controllers that you plug right into the TV. It was pretty fun back then.
Props for playing in a snow bound land in the background. (And loving your hair in this video
7:59 I laughed way harder at that than I should have. 😂
7:29 Those sprites ARE from an RPG. They come from the SNES version of DQ3.
1:18 oddly enough I just watched a video with this game in it.
I actually played Battle City on NES as a kid. It was on a bootleg multigame cartridge with a cartoon fox or a wolf on the front dressed up as a musketeer. It's a pretty fun game from what I remember.
I'm happy to say that this is the first yt video I will watch in 2017
8:9 is that the prison level from metal slug x
I have the original Battle City, and FIVE ROM hacks of it. Including one called ILoveYou. No idea why, nothing but the title screen has been changed.
4:08 I know what you wanna see, yeth: the Christmas celebration
Fun fact. Super Mario Xmas had a romhack of its own, called Super Mario Xmas Re-Kringled. It tried to make the levels better, and changed the sprites a bit more.
I actually liked the idea but couldn't stand the level design. And some of the sprites looked crap. I also hated how this bad romhack was actually being sold on repro sites. i played that tank nes game when i was 8, it was in a cartrige with 251 nes game in it! but it was not Christmas edition, the title screen was red!
I used to play Battle City when i was a kid in a bootleg console that used to be sold here (México) really loved that game
BattleCity was dope, it even had level editor. It gets old quick, but it was just cool to play with friends as a kid.

I'm a simple dude. When I see Metroid in a video, I enjoy
Merry late Christmas and a happy new year antdude

Kaze is the only SM64 hacker these days, he's the best at it, but his biggest problem is that he's a speed runner and refuses to alter SM64's physics to make them less floaty, which makes the games hard as hell
1:17 Weird that you ask i actually did, and damn is it nostalgic for me to see it.
Ah, why does Freeze-Easy Peak, was it, have the _Rhino Spike_ enemies from Sonic Adventure 2?
It's because it's sonic and Mario's super duper Christmas time adventure & knuckles
Now featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series.
I played Battle City as a kid and I liked it very much. I spent days on it!
I played that tank game, it came over on those "yellow card machines" to europe, which were playing famicom and nes games. I remember one I played was called "the terminator 2000" hahhaha
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Battle city was one of the most popular games for Dendy (NES/Famicom clone)...practically nobody in Russia knew about NES system back in 90s...and funniest thing is that this Dendy system was advertised all over Russian TV as official console :)
Where's Merry Gear Solid? You play a stealth game as Santa.
