  • "This all points to a collapse of Russia. All sorts of other other peripheral actions in the Russian zone of influence will be curtailed as a consequence of Ukraine."
Putin's failures in Ukraine could cause the breakup of Russia's alliances says Richard Shirreff, Former Deputy Supreme allied Commander Europe

Absolutely, Simon. And here's the thing: all through the spring and summer, all these European countries remained hesitant to go all-in behind Ukraine and continued giving money to Putin for their energy. However, they're now only up to stores that will last just half way through winter (on the whole). Had they redirected their money to Ukraine, rather than Russian energy, this war would have been over in time for them to lift the sanctions and resume the flow of energy out of Russia. Now, however, they're going to be shivering a lot during this coming winter and Ukraine is soon totally victorious ANYWAY.

Here in the US there are a lot of people blustering about how much they support Ukraine but then pasting stickers on gas pumps blaming Biden for high gas prices. If you tell them that you're happy to pay the price if it's part of the program to hurt the Russians, they look at you as if you're insane. Too many people are supporters only in theory, and not prepared to suffer the least inconvenience themselves, or even admit that there's a linkage between things - as long as they can blame them on the hated opposition political party here, they're happy.

Russia opposes countries joining NATO because NATO works as a defensive organization, protecting venerable former territories under the USSR. Russia needs to understand the time for empires is over. Russia missed a chance when the USSR dissolved. If they would have become a peaceful country and concentrated on developing their economy, improving their living standards, other countries would not fear them. There would be no need for defensive organizations. NATO might have even gone away. Instead Russia has made NATO stronger.

However, even more important, is that the west needs to eliminate all dependency on Russian oil and gas. The Russian forces in Ukraine have been mainly drawn from the Russian hinterland and disproportionately from ethnic minorities within their borders while excluding urban European Russians. They have been excluding troops from its urban centers to hide their losses from the public because trains full of caskets in Moscow and St. Petersburg would be bad PR for the regime. This policy was also used during the Soviet-Afghan War to lessen the impact of that war on the urbanized proletariat and by extension the government and party members.
If Russia chooses to fully mobilize for war there's no reason to believe that the majority of those conscripted into service wouldn't also be ethnic minorities so they can protect their core of urban European Russians. If they draw conscripts from their hinterland it's unlikely these sparsely populated areas would be able to find the numbers necessary to organize anti-war protests. Putin knows that too many of his troops are surrendering so he's calculated that if he attacks Ukrainian civilians he will scare his troops into believing that the Ukrainians won't take prisoners.
Russia has been refusing to repatriate its war dead because sending home trainloads of caskets is bad PR for Putin. If Putin has the bodies cremated in the field he can skip registering the dead and list them as missing or captured instead. Since no family wants to believe their sons have been KIA Putin gets to conceal his losses and hold on to his justification for the war in the short term and potentially threaten the families of the dead or captured with reprisals if he portrays them as turncoats.
There's currently an opportunity for the frozen conflicts in the former Soviet Republics to reignite with the Russian military tied down in Ukraine. So far the former Soviet Republics have been playing a waiting game and anxiously watching the war in Ukraine hoping to exploit a Russian defeat. However, if they wait too long they risk a full Russian mobilization and the Russian military being able to redeploy its forces from that front to reopen these frozen conflicts. They may not have as good an opportunity as they have now.

You think Chechnya might be the first to blow? I don't think conscription will get far because the fear is very real of American weapons and Ukraine's fighting spirit and brilliant tactics. There's also the financial aspect. Can Putin afford to escalate this? He gambled that it would be a quick and easy "operation" and thus inexpensive. Now all that is out the door. I think he retreats, licks his wounds and tries to sweet-talk the EU into buying his oil and gas again. THAT is the real defeat he most fears.

@@cavaleermountaineer3839 My money is on a revolution in Belarus, where apparently opposition groups are already planning something. I don't think Putin will be around to grovel to the EU, though hopefully his successor will realize the benefits of being a cooperative good neighbor, as selling Russia's gas in the West is going to be a tough sell if there is _any_ chance of Russia using the proceeds to rebuild the army to stage another invasion.
Oh, and Putin's legacy, is not the rebuilding of a Russian empire that he imagined at the start of 2022, it is bankrupting Russia and losing any influence over several neighbors, and paving the way for a solid line of Russian land borders with NATO/EU states all the way from the Artic to the Urals! 🤣

I do agree that Germany could do more but I understand why the country is a bit cagey on that, considering the history of Germany and I really do wonder how the situation would be if the EU had a single military, after all, the biggest weakness we are seeing is division and infighting among ourselves with no single voice and direction, we have the EU that could be that but it's not got the powers in those key areas, Putin knows that and saw us in the EU and the west overall as being weak and divided.
I think it's high time we Europeans in the EU to get our act together and start pooling resources in areas that makes sense so we can protect our interest better and do more to help around the world, we really need to start working much closer together on the military, foreign policy and energy matters, otherwise others like China will play games with us with the aim of trying to divide us and keep us arguing among ourselves, pretty much what Russia has been doing the last decade and our division is our major weakness and if we really want to send a powerful message to the likes of Russia, standing together and speaking as one voice would go a long way in that.

After WW2 the US helped Germany instead. And we have been allies ever since.
Putin is to blame here. But if he is gone and Russia wants to rejoin the free world, we should welcome them with open arms.

You obviously failed to understand what I tried to tell you.
The just thing would be to let them pay. But this very likely would result in a unstable and disgruntled nation that sits on nearly half the nuclear weapons on this planet.
Russia will hard enough time to build up its economy again. The sanctions are hitting them harder than they like to admit. Trust in their willingsness to uphold laws and contracts is non-existing. And the west is moving away from fossil fuels in an accelerated rate.
I don't like the idea of a poor and humiliated ex-superpower sitting on more than enough weapons of mass destruction to destroy the planet 10+ times.
Vengence is a bad policy. In personal life as in foreign affairs. Always.

This man has it right we are seeing a complete collapse of the Russian army.
What we are now going to see is the collapse of the Russian empire over the next 12 months but what he has not said is what is going to happen alongside it.
We will see the fall of Lukashenko who is held in power by Putin and is highly unpopular with his own people we will also see unrest in Georga and Chenea.
The next ten years are going to be very turbulent in East Europe which will affect the whole of Europe.

No it will benefit Europe and the world Russia's borders were always too big to begin with , the only people who don't see it are those stuck consuming everyday national news in all countries involved and putler swimming in his own self created cess pool of yes men and disinformation
Everyone else knows the RF will dissolve and are making plans the only unknown are exact dates and hours
China has been waiting decades to get back most of Siberia, Türkiye wants out of the Montreux Convention, likely will take Dagestan, Iran wants a greater share of Caspian control and reduction on sanctions, western Europe wants gas deals with new cash strapped ethnic micro nations, and USA wants military bases in Ukraine and loves messy energy wars
All the world is salivating at the mouth due to putler's idiocy
This will be the death blow to authoritarianism world wide, everyone will know foregoing peaceful transfer of power weakens your country beyond comprehension.........

In dictatorships it tends to be case of those not telling what dictator wants to hear get removed and replacements know to tell what dictator wants to hear. It applies elsewhere as well, but dictatorships are very prone for it.
