This episode of "Johnny Reb" is one of the saddest in the series. The good overcame the evil as was always the case with the stories on "Gunsmoke", but at such a cost.
@@megaflyinbrian It was due to the popularity of William Conrad in the original radio version (which aired April 26, 1952) that the television version came about. During its' radio run, "Gunsmoke" won practically every Award radio had to bestow at the time. The television version initially aired (with a new cast) in September of 1955. The radio show continued on and both ran conjunctively until CBS radio closed down the radio show in 1961 "Gunsmoke" was the last dramatic show to air from CBS Radio Studios in Hollywood. "Gunsmoke's" closure signaled the end of the Vintage Age of Radio. John Meston either wrote the "Gunsmoke" shows or had editorial approval on the one's he did not write. William Conrad continued on with the radio show and became an Executive at Warner Brothers Studio, and also directed many of the first episodes of the television series. "Gunsmoke" was the creation of John Meston and to a great extent William Conrad as he created the personality of Marshall Matt Dillon and also named Chester. Chester's original middle and last radio name (Chester Wesley Proudfoot) was created by Parley Baer who played the radio part. For some unknown reason the last name was changed to Chester Goode for the television series with Dennis Weaver playing the part
