Kiwi Vines Grown From Seed - 48 Month Update

- How to grow a kiwi tree or vine from seed! The kiwi vines are now 48 months old and they are still doing great.
In this video I'll be updating you on the vines. I had to prune them heavily as we had a major wind storm for a few days and many of the leaves and branches were snapped. Every thing I am doing to these 10 plants is an effort to get them to flower and to test different types of pruning practices on the kiwi vines themselves.
It's amazing to me that despite the cold, these hardy Kiwi never flinch with going dormant during the winter months and then going crazy during the summer months!
There is actually a small chance that we could see some flowers this year, although I am not holding my breath just yet...
As a reminder:
1) I had trimmed the side shoots off of one of them to promote vertical growth along a guiding post to gain height.
2) I topped several of them to try to keep them lower to the ground for now to promote fatter trunks - eventually looking at letting them gain height.
3) I left some alone altogether and just let them vine like crazy.
I'm learning quite a bit about these plants and I'm happy you are here to join me as we watch their journey.
With kiwi, you need to have at least 1 male and 1 female plant in order to produce fruit. In fact, you only need 1 male plant for every 8-10 female plants. I have about 12 plants growing so I'm hoping that at least one is a male. I'm assuming I have at least 1 female plant.

Hope too see more come spring. Loved this playlist
Hello, Sir. I'm from Indonesia. Actually, since two years ago I saw your chanel. and I have 3 pear trees & one kiwi. I grow it from seeds after I saw this chanel. :-)
Good job! I just started a mango and it’s finally growing!
Hi Rob! I've watched the entire Kiwi series. Loved it a lot. Hope you'll post another update soon.
Best wishes 😊🙏
You should definitely try growing Pomegranates. I think it would be awesome seeing them grow.
I started a kiwi from seed a couple months ago. It germinated, and I put it in soil. It didn't do anything for a while, but I see the tiniest second set of leaves forming finally!
Thanks for the update Rob! I think you are the only youtuber out there who has 4 year old kiwis grown from seed. I started my own golden kiwis a year ago. Now about 0,5m in height. Regards from the Netherlands.
I love these series that you show growing things from seed. I literally try growing almost everything from seed. I figure if were going to toss them in the trash than why not plant them
First Kiwi vine I've seen growing. I am going to try to germinate some fig seeds and see what they do. Thanks Rob. Happy Mother's Day. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
I just want to say I really appreciate what you do man
Thanks Rob....please keep updating.......can't wait to see fruits on your peaches grown from seeds
Really awesome progress report appreciate the update. On a sidebar your beard game is looking really strong lately. Might need to step up mine
Thank you for the update! I tried growing the seeds from a kiwi after watching your videos and was surprised when they sprouted! Mainly growing them for fun to see what happens... :)
I just completed watching the whole playlist, thanks for doing this experiment and I love such videos 👍
Rob, very nice. Kiwi is a struggle in your zone but doable. I love your determination and experimentation! You seem to like challenges, so here’s one for you. I would like you to grow a Theobroma Cocao indoors. You can do it outdoors but you’d have to have a perfect shaded and humid area that gets little to no wind or strong heat. That being said, indoors is common and makes for an excellent novelty plant. It seems you have a flair for novelty and tropical with a challenge and fun. Go for it, you’ll enjoy the growth and your viewers would see something not commonly seen! Then make some chocolate and pour different types of bars!
Love your channel! I have been planting fruit trees from seeds for 2 years. I am enjoying it. Let me try kiwi.❤️
Love the update
Awesome video thanx I jus planted pineapple seeds and kiwi yesterday
4:05, I can suggest you insulate the part of the wall right next to the plant during the summer and top it with some reflecting material so that you will 1. Reduce the heat radiating from the wall and 2. Have even more light coming from the other side of the plant. Win-win
I sowed kiwi’s this summer. They were growing so slowly that got afraid they would not survive the winter, so I already brought them inside.
Now they grow like as much in 2 weeks as they did in 3 months
Your kiwis got you a sub my friends saw your whole series of kiwie and my fav vines are the 3 at the back the solo one next to the grape vine and the other 2 by the door.
I hope to see the update 2021!!👌
Wonderinf why you never bought the hardy kiwi's? Here in my zone 4 we grow them no problems
Thanks for letting me see green on my Birthday can't wait to start gardening soon. But I need to get the snow out of here first LOL
William Fowler where you living?
@@bigv7386 I live in northern Ontario Canada
William Fowler so it’s stick snowing their in late spring?? That’s crazy
I’ve got 4 tiny kiwi seedlings and I was wondering if you could tell me if they survive freezing temperatures. I’m in zone seven out in Sonora Ca. You also better keep more than one plant around because you need both male and female plants to get kiwis my friend.
It has been 7 months since this video hope to see next update soon
Hope for your well-being in this Corona breakout❤️
Nice video 👍 and you got your like for saying Happy Mother's day and I subscribed
I just planted kiwi seeds yesterday- its spring in South Africa. I'm hoping they grow as great as yours.
Have ypu considered growing granadilla/passionfruit? They grow like weeds here in Pretoria, my mom grew them in Harry Smith right next to the Drakensberg where it snows in winter. They do very well and they grow thick trunks maybe it will work in your area. They fruit in the first year aswell probably about 6-8 fruits per vine but they more than tripple that in the next year. I just grew myself a granadilla archway thats like the kiwi effect you're aiming at and there are lots of flower buds that will soon go in to bloom.
I'm in Durban South Africa. Please give me an update. Considering doing this.
@@amandashongwe7154 it's not a fussy plant. I sprouted seeds that I got from a neighbor. She grew hers from seeds she collected from a store bought granadilla. My arch is lush and thick and full of fruits. Give it a go start in a seeding tray. Now is the perfect time. By winter you will have somr fruits and by next year you will start making jam.
I wait this video
Great video Rob! Excited to see how they turn out. Hope all is well!
How many month after Kiwi fruit came production from seed.
❤️❤️❤️
I think you should add some rope for support, hardly anyone makes such long videos great work can you make one for mango varieties :)
Upload current settings. Mine are now 6months old. I also got 2 grafted plants
How to you tell young kiwi plant male or female without flowers
Did those kiwi vines flower yet?
Do you get kiwi from it? Or does the climate make them not grow?
difference between female and male?
4yrs and no fruits nor flowers? 😓😅 Is it normal to take that long?
Paint all the brick next to the vines white
And wait for cfruiting stage
It takes forever for them to flower almost a decade
you should do a bananna tree
Where is the fruit man
I would love a clone.....

First Kiwi vine I've seen growing. I am going to try to germinate some fig seeds and see what they do. Thanks Rob. Happy Mother's Day. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
