  • How to grow a kiwi tree or vine from seed! The kiwi vines are now 48 months old and they are still doing great.
In this video I'll be updating you on the vines. I had to prune them heavily as we had a major wind storm for a few days and many of the leaves and branches were snapped. Every thing I am doing to these 10 plants is an effort to get them to flower and to test different types of pruning practices on the kiwi vines themselves.
It's amazing to me that despite the cold, these hardy Kiwi never flinch with going dormant during the winter months and then going crazy during the summer months!
There is actually a small chance that we could see some flowers this year, although I am not holding my breath just yet...
    As a reminder:
    1) I had trimmed the side shoots off of one of them to promote vertical growth along a guiding post to gain height.
    2) I topped several of them to try to keep them lower to the ground for now to promote fatter trunks - eventually looking at letting them gain height.
    3) I left some alone altogether and just let them vine like crazy.
I'm learning quite a bit about these plants and I'm happy you are here to join me as we watch their journey.
With kiwi, you need to have at least 1 male and 1 female plant in order to produce fruit. In fact, you only need 1 male plant for every 8-10 female plants. I have about 12 plants growing so I'm hoping that at least one is a male. I'm assuming I have at least 1 female plant.

I started a kiwi from seed a couple months ago. It germinated, and I put it in soil. It didn't do anything for a while, but I see the tiniest second set of leaves forming finally!

Rob, very nice. Kiwi is a struggle in your zone but doable. I love your determination and experimentation! You seem to like challenges, so here’s one for you. I would like you to grow a Theobroma Cocao indoors. You can do it outdoors but you’d have to have a perfect shaded and humid area that gets little to no wind or strong heat. That being said, indoors is common and makes for an excellent novelty plant. It seems you have a flair for novelty and tropical with a challenge and fun. Go for it, you’ll enjoy the growth and your viewers would see something not commonly seen! Then make some chocolate and pour different types of bars!

4:05, I can suggest you insulate the part of the wall right next to the plant during the summer and top it with some reflecting material so that you will 1. Reduce the heat radiating from the wall and 2. Have even more light coming from the other side of the plant. Win-win

I sowed kiwi’s this summer. They were growing so slowly that got afraid they would not survive the winter, so I already brought them inside.
Now they grow like as much in 2 weeks as they did in 3 months

I’ve got 4 tiny kiwi seedlings and I was wondering if you could tell me if they survive freezing temperatures. I’m in zone seven out in Sonora Ca. You also better keep more than one plant around because you need both male and female plants to get kiwis my friend.

I just planted kiwi seeds yesterday- its spring in South Africa. I'm hoping they grow as great as yours.
Have ypu considered growing granadilla/passionfruit? They grow like weeds here in Pretoria, my mom grew them in Harry Smith right next to the Drakensberg where it snows in winter. They do very well and they grow thick trunks maybe it will work in your area. They fruit in the first year aswell probably about 6-8 fruits per vine but they more than tripple that in the next year. I just grew myself a granadilla archway thats like the kiwi effect you're aiming at and there are lots of flower buds that will soon go in to bloom.

@@amandashongwe7154 it's not a fussy plant. I sprouted seeds that I got from a neighbor. She grew hers from seeds she collected from a store bought granadilla. My arch is lush and thick and full of fruits. Give it a go start in a seeding tray. Now is the perfect time. By winter you will have somr fruits and by next year you will start making jam.
