    We started campsite camping last year but readying or vehicle for over landing. Since we are complete noobs this type of info is essential for peace of mind. I’m gonna have to do some more homework in this but definitely appreciate you and ppl alike.

      Only difference is keeping your gear light, fast, and in systems; especially within groups so, ready to roll. Otherwise, it’s all camping. There is some really nice heavy gear for staying in one spot, but overlanding wise think backpacking, lighter the better for gas mileage. And you could go on and on and on.

    Consider traveling with a trolley that folds. I like to put everything I need for a Oceanside beach setup into one trolley with giant sand wheels. Carrying all that stuff really takes the pleasure out of locating near the ocean. A trolley with all of your cooking or sitting by a fire pit is also very helpful.One trip pulling the little red wagon is a lot better than loading your arms and your friends down with all the carry stuff. Be nice and don't use grandma's wheelchair-- that's for her.

      Hadn't thought of that. Try the free version of GAIA or the free onX one month trial. But either way, you really should have some kind of offline GPS navigation when you're off-the-grid

    I use Gaia and, Locus maps for my off road mapping. When I'm looking for potential campsites while at home, I export my route and import it to Google Earth for the high def satellite views (Gaia's is pretty dismal). Having my route in Google Earth makes it easy to follow and scout the surrounding area for campsites.

    • @ggg4runner
      @ggg4runner  10 місяців тому

      Agreed, GAIA satellite resolution is pretty disappointing in comparison. I used to do what you said but stopped since the extra step just didn't yield enough payoff in my case. But, I can certainly understand the need to do that in some cases.

      @@ggg4runner Yep, it is micro SD card for the Garmin GPS. Garmin also has their own version, Hunt View, another called Outdoor Maps with annuals for various areas as well as a Trailhead series. They have a huge selection of maps, including raster maps, high definition relief shading etc. I think there base subscription is only $49.95 a month too. Last time updated OnX it was $99.00.

      Lems Boulder Boot (waterproof version) which are zero drop with wide toe box. I switched to zero drop shoes a while ago and it's one of the couple "normail looking" boots I found. Something about most zero drop shoes having to look ugly/weird like electric cars or something. And, they're on sale right now! Yes they are comfy and did not need breaking in.

    Great video Roger, but I gotta call you out on one thing: Early in the video you tell us not to camp within 200 ft. of fresh water sources, then proceed to show us camping spots on the shore of a lake! I know that Tread Lightly has that as a rule, but there are so many campsites on the water, not to mention lots of ‘famous’ UA-cam overlanders that love to camp right on a river or a lake. I’m ok with that, but keep all human waste at least 200 ft. away from water.
    Also, I would love a couple of videos on OnX & Gaia, probably three of them. One to show the differences between the two, and one each to show step-by-step on how to use each one. I have both, but tend to use OnX much more, as it’s less complicated and more user friendly. But many swear by Gaia, and I really haven't found a good tutorial on it that simplifies it a bit. Thanks for posting!

    • @ggg4runner
      @ggg4runner  10 місяців тому

      You can easily be 200 ft from the lake in those spots but I get what you're saying.
      Not sure if you've seen my older video that has a lot of GAIA specific stuff in it ua-cam.com/video/IBhZHAc-KK4/v-deo.html The UI of the mobile app was updated recently but the guts are still the same and the web interface is still the same. I was planning on doing the comparison video sometime in December and adding an onX guide to my to-do list. Maybe I'll do an updated GAIA guide after those.
      Thanks for watching and commenting! Happy Turkey Day!

    What are your thoughts on TrailsOffroad?

    • @ggg4runner
      @ggg4runner  10 місяців тому +1

      I've never actually tried it but it seems really limited in what it can actually do for the subscription price. Maybe it has more comprehensive information as far as user opinions, rating and other info on 'known" off road trails than onX? I'm not sure. But from what I've seen of it in videos, it seems that I can't really plan an entire trip with it, just look up and navigate 'known" trails, which doesn't suit my needs.

    • @paleh0rse
      @paleh0rse 10 місяців тому

      @@ggg4runner - I'm trying to avoid having subscriptions to all of them at once. Narrowing it down to just one or two is the plan, so that is definitely some good info to consider. Thank you for the great content and the quick response!

      They are excellent...they really break down the trails that you might want to run because they actually drive them and then write up an in-depth review. They aren't as good as OnX or layers on Gaia for finding campsites tho. They are a lot cheaper so it's a good supplement.
