I've always been a Martha Jones fan. She could travel with The Doctor, stop off at Torchwood for a few episodes, get a job at UNIT, pop back in the Donna Nobel series... It's a shame Freema Agyeman bowed out of Doctor Who before being in Torchwood: Children of Earth and the Sarah Jane Adventure "Enemy of the Bane". She was a versatile character who could fit just about anywhere in the Doctor Who Universe. This was a good episode, and the next two, although not specifically about Martha, are also superb.
Martha never got the recognition she deserved, though I feel like some of the writing was at fault for that. It's a pretty common criticism, but the whole 'unrequited love drama' with the Doctor really does narrow the scope of some of the more Martha-centric stories. Despite that, I still think she was absolutely one of the best new Who companions by a long shot, and her presence in all the RTD era shows really makes them all feel like they're part of the same universe.
@@i_am_tomatosoup Martha's crush on The Doctor didn't bother me much. The Doctor's treatment of her bothered me. So once an episode or so, Martha would pine for the Doctor. Then she'd go back to what she normally does - save The Doctor, save the world... the usual Martha stuff.
I always liked Martha in Doctor Who so it is nice having her in Torchwood. This is a solid episode. Cool premise, decent pacing and shock twist ending with Owen's death.
Martha’s alias of Samantha Jones is a reference to the BBC Eighth Doctor Adventures novels, where the first new companion was Samantha “Sam” Jones. She was around for the first third of the series, but because there was no clear vision on who she was as a character beyond teenage 90’s eco she doesn’t stand out much as a character. Her backstory and alternate version is interesting though, as her bio data was reworked to make her the ideal companion, teased in Alien Bodies and expanded on in Unnatural History. The storyline she departs in gets pretty wild, actually retconning a TV story by changing the circumstances of the Third Doctor’s regeneration.
Torchwood has this sneaky little dark side to it where it gives you something you didn’t even know you wanted and love (Martha Jones at Torchwood and her fantastic science nerd chemistry with Owen) end then they crush you by setting the whole thing on fire (happy Owen having a perfect new friend only to die and come back to suffer more than he ever imagined possible…) I love how Torchwood gives you a high only to cruelly take it away. It’s darkness and realistic cruelty of life is impossible for me to resist.
Martha's obscured backstory feels right to me. Yes torchwood is a spin off from Dr Who but does it need to feel like a hanging piece of the main show, rattling in the winds of the BBC budget? I don't think so. Unless Gwenn is very aware of the Doctor, then it's not ment to be given more than a passing reference. Jack has met many people throughout his long life, and not everyone is going to get character depth. It feels to me like the mandalorian: it's not going to dive in and hope you know what they are on about. It gives you enough context within the show that you feel like the main character. Half the major characters in the universe are mere legends or stories. It gives you a window into the main universe without relying on the knowledge there in.
You'll never hear me complain about more Martha content 😝 I love the wee talk she has with Ianto, however it also brings up one of my main problems with the show. Throughout the entire series it was like nobody knew what the hell they wanted to do with Jack and Ianto. In They Keep Killing Suzie it's implied that they're sleeping together. Then we get their kiss in End of Days. Then theres the question of a date in Kiss, Kiss Bang Bang and you think the relationship is going somewhere but then Jack is making eyes with Gwen in Meat and when asked in Reset Ianto says that they "dabble" as if they're just sleeping together again. Then don't get me started on the tomfoolery at the end of Something Borrowed. It's so confused and mixed up which is such a shame because the audience love Jack and Ianto's relationship even if it was represented so badly.
Oh yeah the Ianto Jack relation seemed to change depending to the writer and the episode. Also there was the weirdness with the term couple in CoE. Meanwhile the big finish stuff definitely went the 'their in a full normal relation' route.
I've recently started watching Torchwood and the only thing I knew about it was Jack and Ianto's relationship. I was not prepared for the atrocious lack of build up or chemistry and the weird flirting he does with Gwen (I know he's a flirty guy but it doesn't fit) and I'm rather disappointed about how it's playing out. I expected better writing I guess.
@@nextstop-everywhere if you listen to the Torchwood audio "Broken" it explains some of the nuances of Jack and Ianto's relationship, but I personally love what they did with it in the show, where it's just a subtle thing on the background and you never really know whats going on between them because you aren't supposed to know. It's not the focus of the series and shouldn't be. Ianto isn't the main character, even Jack isn't. Gwen is. So it's pretty logical that her flirting with Jack is in the focus, while Ianto and Jack are private and keep to themselves. The gentle way it was portrayed is lovely and leaves a lot to speculate upon. My personal view of it is that they started as just having sex with each other, later began to develop feelings for each other but were too afraid to address them which leads to some absolutely adorable moments.
Bit late to say this now, but you mentioned you were binging the hustle last video. Would love to see you review the episodes. It's a great show and you do such good reviews, they'd work together perfectly
I absolutely loved series two and bringing in Freema Agyeman and wish she stayed on through Children of Earth. Hoverer, her career was skyrocketing at this time so I don't blame her for leaving the Whoverse behind. 😉
I kinda think it’s weird that Martha is a better doctor than Owen considering he was an established doctor before torchwood and Martha had her education pushed through early by unit

I never liked Martha (too much simpering over the Doctor, the same way the awful Rose did) and she was a bad fit for Torchwood. Rule 101 never try 2 outshine the lead, you’ll lose!!! #BringBackTorchwood. #NotTheAmericanShiteVersion

She was my favourite companion
I think it was a really nice touch to add Freema Agyeman's name to the opening.
I love how much Martha grew as a character over the course of the show, but this is probably my favourite appearance by her in the whole of NuWho.
Yeah, other people prefer Rose but Martha is easily one of my favourite characters
5:29 _“[Ianto] can’t exactly clean up his own dead body”_
I mean, if *anyone* could do it…
Why does Ianto feel like the type of person who would be more upset about the mess than the fact that he was shot
As long as she wasn’t wetting herself over the Doctor or Jack just the same way as Rose did
7:23 you mean Charles Widmore, what a crossover
Ngl these Torchwood reviews are fantastic to have going in the background if you've seen all of Torchwood. Thanks for making these!
The interaction between Martha and Gwen is brilliant, and is one of my favourite bits of interaction in the whole series.
Hearing the word "doctor" in a torchwood review and having it not be related to the time lord is weird.

I wish Martha could have been in children of earth
Always liked how the contact lenses introduced for an episodic plot here went on to be crucial plot devices for both serials
That space china line really got me 😂
I can just imagine Martha dying in this episode and the Doctor showing up in the Hub to say "WTF, Jack?!?"
I am so glad we got to see more of Martha, seriously love herm

The worst thing that ever happened in Torchwood is when Toshio and Martha never made out with each other. Will history forgive?
