Good review. Personally I never recommend 'Gimme Chocolate' to anybody as the first thing for them to hear from BABYMETAL. The video went viral because of the shock factor and 'WTF' reactions it gets, not because it is their best song. Real live performances are great fun and the crowds love when they do it, but the official video was filmed at the world debut of the song and it has the studio audio dubbed over it. They have so much more to offer than 'Gimme Chocolate'.
You are absolutely right about the Kami Band who support BABYMETAL all being absolute world class musicians. What you should also know is that they only play live shows. With just one known exception - guitarist Leda Cygnus who we know has played guitar and bass on two or three of the studio recordings - the Kami Band are not involved in the recordings for the albums.
But BABYMETAL are a live performance act - their albums are good, but the vocals are over-produced and they only give you an idea of how the songs will sound when they play and perform them live. They are very visual and, with the Kami Band supporting them, the sound at live shows is immense.
The first album includes the first 4 or 5 early singles they released when they started as a sub-unit of the Idol group Sakura Gakuin. When they started there was no expectation that they would ever become an independent band releasing their own albums and touring the world. They were simply the pet project and experimental exercise of their producer, a life long metalhead, who saw the potential of a 10 year old girl he had seen singing with her previous Jpop Idol trio and had the idea that with her vocal talents and stage presence she could front a metal-Jpop fusion band.
Most "product" groups start with a formula that it is known will sell to an already identified target audience, so everything is set up before people are chosen who will fit specific roles within the formula and then they are marketed commercially.
BABYMETAL did not start that way. There was no pre-tried or tested formula to follow. There was not a known audience who would buy into the idea. Commercially it didn't make any sense at all as metal was not doing well in Japan at that time.
The producer was only allowed to carry on with his idea because there was no financial risk to the talent Agency who owned the Idol group they were in, so they began as a sub-unit of that group.
The lead singer was always going to be Suzuka Nakamoto - the whole idea stemmed from her talents. The producer wanted to do something different to attract a new audience to metal and choreographed dancing was what Idols did, so he chose Suzuka's two young and also very talented friends Yui Mizuno and Moa Kikuchi as her supporting vocalists and dancers.
Against every expectation BABYMETAL started to gain their very own following and slowly their audience grew. They played a couple of their own small shows in tiny venues (none of the other sub-units did anything outside of bigger Idol group's own shows) and it was decided that when Suzuka was 15 and would be leaving Sakura Gakuin (it had a school theme and was for girls aged 10 to 15) BABYMETAL should go with her as her vehicle.
In anticipation of this the Kami Band were phased in for live shows gradually from late 2012 and became their full time support early in 2014.
The second album, Metal Resistance, was the next step and they explored more metal genres with which they fused their own Jpop style.
The third album is another progression. They did not want to repeat what they had done already or for people to think "this is what BABYMETAL do, we know what to expect". It had to be something new and different to keep us guessing, never knowing what might come next.
What may not be obvious is that it is a concept album with two very different halves. The first half explores different styles and genres from around the world (Indian, Latino, a Finnish polka and so on) together with the more pop or electronica side of what they do and the second half heads back towards the more metal side of what they do.
This is more obvious on the Japanese release which comes on two separate CDs with a light side (first half) and dark side (second half). Each track on the light side has an equivalent, but completely different, track on the dark side.
For me this album doesn't start well with 'Da Da Dance' and 'Elevator Girl' (other people have them as favourite songs, so maybe I'm wrong), but it just gets better and better from there on.
There are two extra tracks on the Japanese edition that were not on the international edition. On the Light side 'up down left right BBAB' and on the dark side 'BxMxC'. If you haven't heard them you may want to check them out.
The last 3 songs 'Starlight', 'Shine' and 'Arkadia' are called the Trilogy of Lights and describe the stages of mourning (grief, acceptance and coming to terms with the loss and finally looking to the future and better things to come) we go through after losing somebody close. Perhaps they are about the year BABYMETAL had in 2018 with the tragic loss of guitarist Mikio Fujioka (RIP) and then Yui leaving after her absence for health reasons, perhaps they are about Mikio and Yui - nobody really knows, but they are a great way to end the album (especially 'Shine' which is just beautiful).

Thank you for taking the time to write your comment and to detail that many aspects of the band. I really appreciate it. I honestly did not know that the band I knew from concerts didn't perform the studio recordings. But then again, I enjoy both the studio versions and the live recordings and in the end it comes down to it all just being really cool music to listen to.
In regards to 'Gimme Chocolate' I couldn't agree more. It's by far not their best song. It was my first encounter and I think that if you make it through the video with a smile on your face chances are pretty good you'll enjoy the rest. ☺️
As for 'Metal Galaxy' I get the appeal, but it's just not my cup of tea. If it was split into two CDs in Europe, too, I probably wouldn't have spent any time with the first one. But overall, coming from 'Metal Resistance' the third record just couldn't live up to my expectations. Which is fine by me, I don't have to like everything released by artists I generally enjoy.

@@creasteve_ Thank you for replying. I agree, I also enjoy both the studio and the live versions, but watching the live performance videos it is clear where they are at their best.
You are right about 'Gimme Chocolate' and the people who do make it through with a smile on their face will go on to enjoy the rest. Sadly a lot of people don't make it through with that smile and they will miss out on all the songs and performances they probably would enjoy if they had seen nearly any other song than 'Gimme Chocolate' first.
I completely understand how you feel about Metal Galaxy. I wasn't sure at first and there were songs that I knew I would have to wait for the live performance before I might appreciate them properly ... those songs have grown on me quite rapidly since seeing and hearing them live. I would have said exactly what you said about the first CD originally as well, but I do have the Japanese edition and, even though those two songs I mentioned above will never be among my favourites, I have to say now that I listen to and enjoy both CDs almost equally.
But you are right, if it isn't your cup of tea there is nothing wrong with that - there are very few or possibly no bands where I like everything they've ever done either.

Thank you for your kind words for Babymetal. Spreading the 'good words of the Fox God' ;-)
As Grington I also have been a fan for years and follow them closely, I won't repeat what he said, but try and touch on some other things:
On average we know: it takes 3 Babymetal songs/videos to really appreciate Babymetal. To grew the new pathways in the brain or something and to really get it. To also understand they are serious about what they are doing. It's not just some joke. They are seriously fun, they take making people smile very serious.
When it comes to the third album... while I was incredibly sad about Mikio's death, as mentioned he wasn't involved in the creation of the music, just the live interpretation which he probably did the best guitar work of all of those who have ever played live with Babymetal.
I think they lost 2 things in the third album: the first 2 albums were more infused with innocent fun. The third album turned out to be more serious (the second was also more serious than the first). Which in part is because of their age (the music was always written to fit the girls, maybe even 'in their voice'). The other important part why it turned out more serious is because of that death and because Yuimetal had to leave because of health reasons. Which is represented in the music. The first two albums had: 2 (main singer) Su-metal solo songs and 2 "Black Babymetal" duo songs (just Yuimetal and Moametal). Even Moametal's voice seems to have been used less (she had been very busy training dancers to perform with Babymetal, maybe that's part of the reason). Which makes the album more dynamic (?). Some songs might have even been written for all 3 girls and later had to be changed. And if I can say it: as a connoisseur of Babymetal all 3 albums are overproduced, it's the live performances where they really shine. If you don't have the Japanese version of the third album you might not be familiar with the song BxMxC or maybe you've only seen the MV. But live it really hits home. Their are many fans who say the songs of the first album is best and those are the hardcore fans why like the most raw/experimental Babymetal. And they were disappointed with the second album. But almost all cases, fans who said something is not so good or couldn't get into it: after seeing it live it gets to a new level. Even going so far as: "it was my least favorite Babymetal song and after seeing it live it's become one of my top favorites." :-)
Anyway, for example check the BxMxC MV and then a pretty good live audio from 'fan cams' of 2020 shows in Europe: BABYMETAL 2020 BxMxC ( HQ Audio Mix )
And see in the MV, their are effects used on Su-metal's voice, but live it's much more natural and the music is more raw and heavy. Definitely an improvement.
But maybe it's easier for me to get into such songs as I'm a Su-metal 'fanboy' :-)
PS Babymetal performed 2 times in Berlin: 2015 and 2020, both times at the Huxley's Neue Welt. Which is unusual, Babymetal almost everywhere is performing in bigger venues over time. Except for Japan where they play the biggest arenas, so it's hard to grow bigger that that. Only one year played at the Tokyo Dome stadium.
