- DemocracyNow.org - In a rare live interview, Mumia Abu-Jamal calls into Democracy Now! as the new film, "Long Distance Revolutionary," about his life premieres in New York City this weekend. After 29 years on death row, he is now being held in general population at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution -- Mahanoy. "How free are we today, for those who claim to be non-prisoners? Your computers are being read by others in government. Your letters and phone calls are being intercepted," says Mumia Abu-Jamal. "We live now in a national security state, where the United States is fast becoming one of the biggest open-air prisons on Earth. We can speak about freedom, and the United States has a long and distinguished history of talking about freedom, but have we sampled freedom? I think the answer should be very clear: We have not." In 1982, Mumia was sentenced to die for killing Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. He has always maintained his innocence and is perhaps America's most famous political prisoner. In 2011, an appeals court upheld his conviction, but also vacated his death sentence it found jurors were given confusing instructions.

Mumia--may the forces of positive winds of freedom reach you. I remember a very sad time in my life, walking through City Hall in Philadelphia going to a non-job and humming Marble Halls while you were on trial back then. I still had the sadly romantic notion that my song would reach the hearts of those who wrongly accused you.
I am a woman from Ireland and I feel that you did not get a fair trial. I hummed Marble Halls to give you spirit but I don't think you needed that. You had enough strength to get through it on your own. I hope that very soon you will get the justice you deserve.
FACT: Per capita, the U.S. has the largest prison population.
per capita and in fact, The United States has less than 5 percent of the world's population. But it has almost a quarter of the world's prisoners.
Indeed, the United States leads the world in producing prisoners, a reflection of a relatively recent and now entirely distinctive American approach to crime and punishment. Americans are locked up for crimes - from writing bad checks to using drugs - that would rarely produce prison sentences in other countries. And in particular they are kept incarcerated far longer than prisoners in other nations.
Criminologists and legal scholars in other industrialized nations say they are mystified and appalled by the number and length of American prison sentences.
The United States has, for instance, 2.3 million criminals behind bars, more than any other nation, according to data maintained by the International Center for Prison Studies at King's College London.
China, which is four times more populous than the United States, is a distant second, with 1.6 million people in prison. (That number excludes hundreds of thousands of people held in administrative detention, most of them in China's extrajudicial system of re-education through labor, which often singles out political activists who have not committed crimes.)
San Marino, with a population of about 30,000, is at the end of the long list of 218 countries compiled by the center. It has a single prisoner.
The United States comes in first, too, on a more meaningful list from the prison studies center, the one ranked in order of the incarceration rates. It has 751 people in prison or jail for every 100,000 in population. (If you count only adults, one in 100 Americans is locked up.)
The only other major industrialized nation that even comes close is Russia, with 627 prisoners for every 100,000 people. The others have much lower rates. England's rate is 151; Germany's is 88; and Japan's is 63.
The median among all nations is about 125, roughly a sixth of the American rate.

We're decades past guilt or innocence concerning Mumia. What matters most is there is, was and will always be doubt in this matter. As such, per the law, he should've been acquitted. And as such he should be released.

While this man is intellectual and what he says is true about politics no one will ever truly know what took place the night he committed a crime. what I can offer is this deep down as humans we know killing for any reason is wrong but we still do it. we all do blacks white americans non americans christians muslims, rich people poor people governments it is the order of human life. we focus political parties and color and region but we forget we are all trying to do the same things Eat provide shelter educate our children find some happiness and then we die when we all understand that we are all trying to do the same things no matter what we believe then we can change this is a simplistic answer but thats the beauty in peace and why it is so hard to accomplish It is such a simple thing to not hurt each other but the complexity of the blessing we have received which is the human mind is what makes this difficult.
