I was the FIRST Freaknik DJ! I, in fact, did the first and third Freaknik. Dexter King and myself practically held down the entire AU Center as disjockeys in the early 1980s. The latter days of Freaknik was not built on what was originally intended.
What was your DJ name?
@@leonardchristopher9473 "DJ Sounds of Atlanta."Owned and operated by David Jones, Jr.
You and I both know it was TK Kirkland 🤣
NOBODY CARES!😂
I hope you get your flowers! I personally thank you for your contributions!
No matter what anyone says Jermaine Dupri is a legend.
Respect where respect is due. But Jermaine Depri is a kid compared to any traditional "legend." He says himself that he was too young to even grasp Freaknik as a youth.
@@DavidJones-ff9wbThat’s not what he said and this is a stupid comment
@@DavidJones-ff9wbthen, by your brilliance, only Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, and Dionne Warwick are "legends" 🤔 bcuz they were born in one-room school houses 😅
Silly!
The guy's been Famous, talented and RELEVANT since before he could drink legally 🤔, cut it out w that nonsensical statement 😂
How bout this, JD is a "current" legend 💯???
And I'm from Jersey 🤷🏿♂️

Give Jermaine his FLOWERS...and he gon' put 'em on them socks 😂

🤣🤣🤣
Jermaine definitely needs his flowers. Truly talented and yet not recognized as such. I did not like his analogy of FREAKNIK and roaches he could have explain and compared it to something else. Widen your vocabulary sir.
I agree. He came off as ignorant.
Ants would’ve been a better word. Ants carry back to build.
Don't get mad now, He said he didn't go to college. 🤷🏽♀️😆🤦🏽♀️ ...Hell, y'all probably did look like roaches. 😂😂🪳
All this is old news we should be thinking positively for our future teens to give them a more stable foundation to stand on because this world is ending the best thing everyone needs to learn how to survive you out there dancing and a war breaks out you better fine somewhere to hide 4 real
Agreed. I had a difficult time listening to him attempt to articulate is thoughts about freaknik.
When jess said the easter socks 😂😂😂😂😂😂
So so Socks

Yeah, she slipped that one in.😅

Man Jess is going to roast anybody 😂😂😂 all the time
What JD failed to acknowledge was that originally when Freaknick started by HBCUs, it was for like-minded driven students whose intentions were to rep their collèges by bringing out marching bands, fraternities and sororities , like a big meet and greet. When those students would go back home and tell their non-college friends about their parties , them friends would also invite their non college ratchet- hood as friends who would then come and over time change the whole dynamic of the crowd, the music , and vibe of what Freanick was meant to feel from when it started
I don't know about all of that but we definitely did not intend for it to evolve into the "disrespectful nuisance" it became.
Born and raised in Atlanta #gradybaby. I was a teenager during freaknik. Best party ever. Had the city at a stand still for days.
You ain't NEVA lied!! Good times & great memories. Freaknik 94 was the best...imo ❤😊
Why do blakk people from atl born in that hospital call themselves that? Ever bothered to research who henry grady was? He was a devout, dedicated steadfast yt supremacist who promoted and advocated for the social supremacy of whyytes over blakks. As a journalist and editor at the Atlanta constitution, he wrote about lynching with levity and humor. It's wild that you all refer to yourselves as his babies.
Henry Grady was a dedicated and devoted whiiite supremacist. It's wild that people born in that hospital refer to themselves as a "grady baby"
As in Henry Grady the anti-blak rayycist?
@@mrbrainchild7637 your point being?!?!?.
This was my era and I definitely wouldn’t change it for the world 🌎!! As a broke college student these were great memories.
Yessss!!!
Jermaine Dupri is a treasure to the culture and music. He help md two of my artists career (Usher and Mariah). I be arguing for bros legacy like it's mine 😂
Didn't Katt Williams just call him out for diddling with P Diddly?
Didn't he just get called out for diddling with P diddly?
I remember when we could share hotel rooms and actually get along and be together. I really miss those days 😢
Best comment on here!
I feel he does not get the public praise he deserves.
Idolatry is the problem now
@@jimflipz4774 So is downplaying someone's entire legacy
He sure doesn’t, he’s positive , and you know that the negative gets more attention/shine 💯
Because he doesn’t push his accomplishments
JD is probably one of the most successful humbled dude in the industry
You don’t ever see him thirsty for views.
My mom is from ATL and talks about freaknik, they need to throw another giant black party down there, start a movement of joy, dance, talent, partying. The clubs definitely ain't fun no more everyone just stands around, we need a collective vacation/bbq party.
Jermaine is a great producer, the comments are cracking me up.
If only people would behave
I was there riding clean in an1989 Ford Escort Gt.....with two 10s bumping on Stewert Ave...best time ever
The man that brought us Da Brat and funkdified in 1994. Good childhood memories. #Respect
Freaknik ultimately turned into Spring Bling in the 2000's. Maybe we need more festivals around Spring Break in different cities to break up the quantity of people coming just to 1 spot.
Nah, started going to Myrtle in the 2000s.
90’s
Spring bling isn’t even close lol

Naw
Jermaine is very humble, he has written/produced so many hits which put Atlanta on the map, he deserves to be celebrated

Fun Fact.. FreakNik was created by some DC dudes who went to college in Atlanta.

Great interview! And I’m glad he mentioned OutKast! I remember them giving away cassettes of their first album, during FreakNic, prior to its release!
I was there 97 & 98 incredible time...

Give JD his Flowers 💐💐💐 so so def
Good interview so far!
“ Easter socks” down!!!! I love J Dupri! 🎉🎉🎉
This generation would turn freaknik upside down. They couldn’t handle such a classic event
hahahha ppl would end up missing and/or dead
Everybody would just be standing around on their phones doing nothing.
This man is the real G.O.A.T
Jermaine is 51 years old.... he was able to legally hit any club by 1994.
He said 1992. Do you choose not to listen? 🤡🤦🏾♀️
Just *LOUD and WRONG* 🙄🙄
Right that’s what I said
I was JUST doing that math like🤔I was in the clubs at 16 in ‘96 so HOW he wasn’t old enough 😂😂😂
Freanik was from 1983-1999 the height of it was in ‘94 so do the math.
J D voice need to be heard. I find him to be a huge success story. Look at him dance for Whoudini in The Feaks Come Out At Night. I followed his legacy every since then. Congratulations to the amazing producer who created the best talent from the SOUTH. ❤❤❤😅😊 😎
They need to do a doc on the Kappa beach party that used to go down in Galveston, TX.

Jermaine bit his tongue when cthagod said something about boss baby lol 😂
Jermaine dupri is a legend!!! BTW those soso def bass all-star series go hard... They still on my playlist!💯
Jd is the goat for many reasons. It seems like all the big producer or artist who are men get outed about being predators sexusl harrasment etc. And I have never heard that about jd as long as he been in this business. I believe god don't bless no mess and this man is still making records at #1 says a lot.
Yes! Everything you said💯
This man co-wrote one of my favourite songs of all time, “Always Be My Baby” by MC. He will ALWAYS get my respect!
Respect to him for dating Janet Jackson for 8 yrs ( I REALLY envy him for that alone ) LOL. Till this day I'm still-JEALOUS.
I’ve never heard him talk this long. I’ve always liked him 💐💐💐
The Super Bowl Boss baby outfit 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Nashville has 3 HBCU's in the same area.

He was talking about in the same city Virginia Union is not in Hampton
Ps And I’m from South Carolina 🤷🏿♂️
Norfolk State, Hampton. VA. State and VA. Union.St Paul's closed down, did I miss one?
Remember The Greekfest in Virginia? CRAZY!!!! A Smaller Freeknik🎉
He is speaking of ATL specifically not GA.
He’s talking about in one city. Morehouse, spellman, Clark, and morris brown were literally right next door to each other.
JD owes us a public apology for those Gat Damn socks !!!
Dude I was watching the SB with my wife and she would not shut up about those damn socks 🤣🤣🤣🤣She said what does JD have on🤦🏿♀️🤣🤣

I was in the city for ‘94 ‘95 and the EPIC ‘96 seasons….I can vouch FOR ALL JD speaking on--they HAD TO shut that down

Good conversation!
Jess: Why 21 Savage involved?
JD: It was his birthday theme for last two years
Jess: mmmm
Being from Atlanta I remember that time.

Sometimes a Starter jacket and baseball cap is all you need. And, just because something looks good on someone else doesn't mean its gonna look good on you.
Great interview by both sides
I moved to Atlanta in 1989 freaknik .It was everything... But I also remember when things started to change down on peachtree. Hotels started coming in and they blocked us.😅😅😅
JD is always dropping gems and gives us a hip hop history lesson. Salute to you sir!

TALK THAT TALK JD👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Usher said, on Club Shay Shay, that Confessions was about him and multiple writers who wrote the song about their shared experience.
He did say that. But I'm thinking he was talking about the album CONFESSIONS as a whole, not that particular song, which is probably what JD was referencing.🤷🏽♀️
Yea confessions was a single and the name of the album...
Yeah but also on another interview he said that it was about Jermaine he wrote it
@@shylae2000 Right! I'm sure Usher was talking about the album, but JD was talking about the song! Lol
Jermaine told us years ago that confessions was about him and his situation with the girl getting pregnant and everything. Chilli even has said it wasn't about them, if I'm not mistaken.
JD is one of the best in the music business!! I almost went to FreakNik in '97 as a HS Junior!! I didn't get to go, but some of my friends did!! The stories they told me......I can't say on here 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jess didn’t prep for the interview she ain’t say Nottin 😂😂😂
I really don’t like that she doesn’t prep for the interviews.
I think it’s morning sickness. Poor thing 😫
She doesn't say shit
Especially during political conversations! You forget she's even in the room. 😂
They should have held off. I’m tired of Hearing Charla saying she sick. Hell I don’t care to hear that every 3 mins.
32 years that’s crazy, dude has a number one in 1992 and now in 2024 that’s insane
I FELL OFF MY CHAIR SO HARD!!!! I knew Charlamagne was headed in that direction when he said "Speaking of wearing some ridiculous clothes," the Boss Baby Outfit!!!!! Dude look like a bald headed toddler with his Easter socks on lol.
Congrats on the number one song, JD! 👏🏾 still making hit records in 2024
Them shades are dope
Ayo!!!! We caravaned down with two cars and had 2 rooms💪🏾💪🏾 can never be repeated!! Freaknik and we rode Das Efx Straight Out the Sewer the entire time!!!!
Living Legend!
Jermaine definitely deserves his flowers. He has been in the game for 3 plus decades and guided the careers of Brat, Bow Wow, Kris Kross, Usher, and other artists. He started the trend of wearing pants backwards although I never did. Always heard of freak nik but, never attended one. Alot of people Im sure did things they weren't proud of. Im thankful that anything I did in my youth or early 20s will always remain private and I was afforded the ability to make mistakes privately. If I was of this generation I can guarantee that I would have already been canceled or at least they would have tried. Im very out spoken and bow down to NO one other than his lord savior jesus christ. Im only required to stay black, pay taxes, and of course die as death is a natural occurrence in life.
He came to talk his ish!
