"For a while, I held back from posting videos like this on my social media because of the fear that better musicians would judge me- say I was selling out and that what I was doing was simple, unimpressive. There’s still a stigma among some musicians (sax players in particular) that if you’re not playing bebop or 2-5-1 licks, you’re wasting your time. I see musicians putting each other down all the time on the internet and I’ve gotten disrespectful comments from other players on my videos. In light of the pandemic and having gained the true understanding that every opportunity to perform is a blessing, I’ve decided not to let those negative thoughts get to me anymore. Because when I’m not playing gigs like this, I am shedding jazz tunes at home, learning new theory, improving my technique, and practicing all types of music so that I can go out and apply those techniques on pop tunes that people know and love. Leaving every gig out of breath, exhausted, sore, with a pool of spit at the bottom of my horn, NO- gigs like this are not easy. Not the way I do it. And when I see people bugging out and having the time of their lives, how could I enjoy playing the technically “easy” things like this any less than the “difficult” ones?"
