Good morning Matt.I like tying winged wet flies.A lot of them are very old, with a lot of history to them.Great tie Matt , gotta check out the book.Happy birthday Mike and many more.
Happy birthday Mike. Looking forward to this series. I haven't been trying long but as soon as I had techniques down I got into wing wet and classic salmon
Thanks Thomas! I am too, except videos of these winged wet flies tend to be a bit longer. Ie, they take longer to make and fewer viewers will sit through a 15 minute tie! But they really can be cool looking. :-)
Happy birthday, Mike!! All flies with the word fancy are going to be my favorites. This one is really pretty. Change that hook to a ring of some sort and I'd wear that one as a necklace.
Good morning Debora! And funny you mention that... I'm thinking of buying some lapel pins made out of hooks that I can tie flies on and give out. One of my peers is retiring and I'm thinking a custom fly (US Navy colors) would be a nifty gift for him.
Nice looking fly there Matt. And a happy birthday to Mike! My birthday was three weeks ago and all I got was a cake with a goofy cartoon fish on it that said "Have a Crappie Birthday". I guess it's the thought that counts.
Thanks Ted! Yeah, winged wets can be tricky. I'm learning that from tying some of these and the ones from Mary Orvis Marbury's book. I still need lots of practice here. :-)
Fantastic looking fly! A favorite fancy fly pattern I tie since I share the same last name of the guy who developed the pattern. I prefer red and black wool body with GP tail with GP yellow crest feather swept upwards and black crow wing slips and beard. Albeit your flies red and black body looks cool too. I have only seen one other tier from the UK tie this fly on UA-cam. Thanks for sharing another great video!
Thank you John! With your name, you should make this fly your avatar. :-) The wool bodies on this pattern do look really good, and if I could get crow to look as good as regular old duck, I'd probably use it more often! And oh man, going with the yellow crest feather... that's seriously old school. :-)
Attractive fly. I like that tip of using a hook in a material clip to measure the amount of feather barbules to use for the wing. The Klausmeyer book was already on my wish list. I expect it to be good, but I look forward to your review. Should I keep it on the list or take it off? Will have to wait & see. ;-)
Matt, I'm very glad I found this series because not only do I like fishing with classic flies I like tying them as well. I have been struggling with winged wet flies getting the wings to look the way they should and have been given lots of advice from many great tyers but not everything works for me. I have noticed with you and a few other tyers like Barry Ord Clarke and Davie MvPhail, you seem to also push down on the wing where it is tied in, or kink the wing up as your wrapping the thread. I can't really tell because like Barry and Davie you kind of slide your fingers over the wrapping area. Is that the secret to getting good looking wings? Again, I'm glad I found this series you put on and will also be looking at your other series of flies. Thank you very much.
Terryll, thanks for the kind words. And yep, you got it. That's exactly how I work wings like this. One other tip, keep the first pinch wrap loop kind of loose and bring the thread under the hook and pull up to get your tension. And one other note... I get this right about one out of three times. If that often. If after the first couple of wraps the wing isn't looking right, I'll back it off and try again. After about the third or fourth try, the wing is probably too mangled to continue and you have to start fresh with a couple new slips. And this is part of the video that you don't see (because we can edit it afterwards!) Now I can't speak for Barry and Davie, but I'll be even these master tiers don't get it perfect the first time every time. Thanks again for the note and I appreciate you watching my friend. :-)
Matt, thank you for your reply. With all the great tyers I have talked to, you included, they all say the same thing that you mentioned, that they are good for one in three or four tries, so that takes the pressure off of me. I also want to say thank you for the tips that you share, as in the trick with the red floss by not allowing it to splay out to wide by twisting it a little to keep it flat. Thank you for your videos because they are in inspiration to me.
Great tie once again Matt! I am really a big fan of classic wet flies, they are just a beautiful looking fly once completed . Tougher to tie in some aspects but worth it in the end. Here’s to another for the list 😂 . Thanks again for your time !
Mike is another old dude like me on the channel. :-) And YES! You're going to make it big Otto. Hopefully your review will be as quick as mine was. I'll keep checking and let you know when I see your first ad...
I have before and even on thin bodied dry flies sort of like these. It would make it shinier and maybe look a little better, but I'm not sure if on a wet fly it would help it sink. It might do the opposite and keep the floss from holding water and make the fly more buoyant. Would be interesting to try it and see.
It says in your description `An old English classic winged wet fly, (Perhaps you mean British?). The Watson's Fancy was first tied in Scotland by Donald Watson from Inverness` , therefore it is a traditional Scottish pattern. A very effective fly for brown trout and sea Trout, and one I still use on our Lochs to this day, although I tie mine with jungle cock cheeks as it traditionally has them. Best regards from Scotland,
Ahhh... Mark, thank you for the lesson! Perhaps I should have called this a classic Scottish pattern! And I have seen this with pheasant crest for the tail and it is indeed a beautiful pattern. (But harder to tie for us mere mortals.) Regardless, thank you for the note my friend. :-)
@@SavageFlies Hey thanks for the reply, you are very welcome. As traditional Trout flies interest you, search google for a fishing author named Tom Stewart. Not much, really just the size. I could have used goose for this size 10. But goose might be a little too bulky for a 16 or smaller.
