Realy appreciate your videos Rhys! Often I will be goggling something specific and can’t find when I am looking for, then one of your videos will peak my interest and I find the info is exactly what I am after! Cheers
Great very thought through Tipps for me as a beginner it’s always amazing how versatile fly fishing really became. As a child I went a lot with my uncle and there it was just the typical dry fly fishing for trout! Now I am fishing for carp, pike and anything else I want to catch and try out there’s a method for it on your fly rod. Just need to know how but still amazes me :)
Loving your channel , I’m just trying to get back into fly fishing after about 18 year off so your tip and advice are coming in handy , cheers , atb Deka 👍🏻😎
Rhys, thanks for the excellent content. As a novice fly fisher this concise content de-bunks all the jargon for me. Thanks and lets hope my catch returns improve, tight lines, JA
After watching your video I went fishing last week at my local fishery and used nymphs all day had a 3lb spastic 2x 3.5 rainbow and a 7.5lb rainbow all on pheasant tail nymph all fished slow on a 15ft leader on single fly as fishery rules. counting down as you advised. thanks for your videos always great to watch
Great video. Really helps watching these, you give so much simple but effective advice ......it's so helpful to understand the basic set ups for each season. Just got into fly fishing this summer and have been watching many of your helpful videos. Subscribed :)
Thanks rhys for the fantastic tips must confess I have never hooked up with a buzzer / or blood worm hoping to change this soon, but I did catch useing the booby on the bottom, my first booby catch, thanks,
Already mate , I don’t usually fish lakes only in winter when the river season is over, ive a spare reel and can’t decide to put a sinking line or intermediate on it, what do u reckon ?
Rhys. I have learned more from you and Steve Cullen on UA-cam than anything else. Thanks a lot mate, you have improved my fishing and understanding so much.
As a side method.... particularly if you can't fish boobies, a foam backed shrimp on a sinking line and shortish leader can work well when it is cold and the fish are lethargic and deep....
Good information as always Rhys! Thanks for that! I've noticed that fish fry are are rarely mentioned as a food source and wondered about that. Is that because the high density of large trout in a fishery quickly eat all the fry leaving only insects to forage on? In our local lakes fry and small fish comprise 75% or more of forage for the predators (bass, walleye and pike) and 3 to 6 inch streamers (lures) are very effective. Just curious.
For the uk small stillwaters, in around 80% of the lakes I fish there is no population of smaller fish for trout to predate on, so they don’t have that available food source. And thus we rarely employ tactics that replicate those. On larger stillwaters it’s more common with the October period being well known as fry bashing season. That’s largely because some of our late lakes hold a bountiful supply of roach, perch, minnow, Dace etc… that allow the trout to stock up on in readiness for winter
great video well done 👍. Do you think that a faster action rod is a better choice than a medium fast action rod for getting a longer distance more easily?
Hi paul, if that's all you have then it can work. The line will act more link a sink tip rather than a straight through sinking line. Which can affect how the flies fish i.e the flies will rise and fall based on your retrieve as oppose to travelling on an evening plain in line the depth of the sinking line. You can pick up sinking lines dirt cheap at this stage and I would reccomend you pick up a fast intermediate too 👍
Hi Rhys so a local small still water I fish is gin clear and about five to six foot deep both small lakes filled with stocky’s as it’s a fishery to . What technique would you use ? Bung, long leader to keep the fly away from fly line, small and slow etc ? Any pointers much appreciated and thanks for your channel 👍
There are 3 reasons that I think fish take a fly: Aggression (Lures), Feeding (Nymphs, buzzers, dries), Curiosity (Bung). On any given day a fish will be more susceptible to 1 of the 3 methods above. It's just a case of working out which at your fishery. Start in the order described above and eventually you'll crack it!
Oh I've just seen you use the shakespeare sigma and an airflow switch. I'm looking at getting another cheep set up as I have a greys gr60 and a favo reel (spools are about £60 I think) What cheap set up would you recomend? Cheers
Another great video. On top off Ethan R,s question, I fish big lakes and use a med-fast 7-8WT 9'6/10ft rod and its great for distance and lures in windy conditions, but it can get heavy by the end of the day... I'm looking at maybe going down to a fast 5WT 9'6/10FT for the days when we have better conditions, will I still get a good distance with a fast #5 10FT?
Josh has reccomended a rod that i've been using last year and i'd agree. A 5wt on large resevoirs would work but would be a steep dropdown and wouldnt be a tool for distance. A 6wt stillamaniac hits that sweetspot between gentleness and distance
@@RhysFishes Thank you so much for your advice, the stillamaniac seems to get a lot of good recommendations, I'm on board have now got one on order, thanks again.

Really dependant on your casting style. Faster action rods are generally better for heavy sinking lines 👍
@@RhysFishes thankyou that is very useful to me
Tight lines x🎣

Hi rhys just started fly fishing wondering if using sinking polyleader is fine for trout in a fishery if i dont have sinking line only floating?

A sigma rod and airflo switch reel for cost is hard to look past 👍

What do you think is the best fly to use when the season opens on clywedog?
Too many flies to cover different situations. Boobies early on though 👍
