They had fresh fruit and veggies each patrol! But they lasted only a few weeks at best. George was given the task of stowing the stalks of bananas as a last minute job. Also I will be that your experience is post war... where an officer and NCO are required for most things. Did you know that there are more Admirals and Generals today in the military than there were in WWII ! And in WWII we had 15 million men in uniform. Today its less than 2 million!
What a wonderful story! Thanks! When RCA was building their first color TV camera, in the late 1940s, they used a nice bowel of fruit as a test subject. It had apples, pears, oranges, plums and bananas. Development of the camera was going beautifully until one night a wise guy painted the bananas blue! The engineers nearly went mad trouble shooting the color processors trying to find the cause of the fault in the TV picture. It took several days for one of them to finally glance at the bowel of fruit and see the joke! Very few were laughing then. So, in summary, bananas are dangerous!
I'm in Buffalo Niagara. I've been on the Croaker, Sullivans, and Little Rock a million times. It's time to take the 4 hour drive and go see your boat 😎
Interesting that it does not have a cover over it, given food gets stashed everywhere on a sub. I guess everyone knowing that that is a moving part solves the issue
What! The Skipper took banana's instead of the S&H Greentstamps!! Man, with all the fuel they took on that would have been a lot of books of stamps! 😊😊
Everyone's favorite--crew and visitors alike--would be simply be in awe at the blue/red/purple day-glo in what the kids christened it as the "Halloween room" 😱💀☠👹👻👽Great video !
Very interesting! The submarine Becuna does not have the power option for controlling hte planes so those wheels had to be used. And there were no benches for the operators to sit on when manning them.
I'll bet the wheels are linked to power systems so they have a clutch to shift from power to manual. And somebody probably stole the benches before they opened Becuna as a memorial ship...😢😂 Gotta sit down and the boxes are vital extra storage. ❤
The Becuna and many other boats, such as Carp (my qual boat) had a hydraulic system that had three modes of operation -- Normal, Emergency, and Hand. The large wheels were used in two of the modes. When in the normal mode the wheel operated a hydraulic pump that positioned a spool valve in the torpedo room. The spool valve routed fluid from a motor driven hydraulic pump to the plane's operating ram. In emergency mode the large wheel was not used. Instead, a small wheel operated a spool valve that routed hydraulic fluid directly from the boat's main hydraulic plant to the plane's operating ram. In hand mode the wheel and the attached hydraulic pump was sent directly to the plane's operating ram in the torpedo room. Putting the planes in hand was an excellent way to train a planesman since he quickly learned to use a minimum of planes to control the boat. Once again, a great presentation!
In a television program called "The Silent Service", the USS Cod temporarily "lost" a boarding party searching for contraband off the port of Singapore (link below). I'm curious about the story. If you have any information, I'd love to hear it. I grew up in Cleveland and visited the Cod twice: once through YMCA Indian Guides, and once through Boy Scouts. Thank you for maintaining this historical record. ua-cam.com/video/mobbs8cyXNo/v-deo.html
I am a retired USAF Aircraft Avionics Technician. Do I have stories of similar mysterious occurrences or events that are laughable today? It was humor that saved our bacon at times.
And said, "Kid, whad'ya get?" I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay $50 and pick up the garbage. " He said, "What were you arrested for, kid? " And I said, "Littering." And they all moved away from me on the bench There, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I Said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back
Paul, thank you for not letting the tales of the Cod die. You are serving a very important part of history.
You know 'OLD SALTS" will tell you- "Bananas on ship" are BAD LUCK". FYI- NOW YOU KNOW.
Any machinist mate should be able to tell you that bananas are great for quieting down gears.
Banana paste scraped off the walls and floor of the crew shower..... then made into banana bread and banana pudding. Um, no thanks. lol. 😂
Don't like the menu, feel free to order out.
Thought an officer with an NCO was in charge of storage?
Probably the last fresh fruit they seen for the rest of the war

Always get a good history lesson on board the Cod.

Unnecessary covers just mean restricted access.
Amazing video I enjoy watching your channel ❤❤❤😊❤
Great story! Thank you!!
Traditionally bananas are bad luck on boats.
Seems to ring true even in modern times.
I’ve heard that bananas stored with other fruits and vegetables will make them go bad faster and that’s where the bad luck reputation comes from.
Banana Steak for sure!
Cute story!
Great presentation and thanks!
This is a very interesting and funny story. This one ap"PEAL"ing story 😆.
2:00
Sounds like he is talking about the documentary "Down Periscope" filmed in the USS Stingray (Pampanito).
Love that film! Was in a couple of scenes with Kelsey as a lookout.
That's a great story! Thanks.
Hmmmm for a minute when we first saw this we 🤣🙃😁😆🤣thought it was a hotdog in Pauls hand
I love visiting the Cod, and am looking forward to coming to the Night Event!

S&H Green Stamps!?!?! You must be as old as I am!
@@USSCod LOL! I just might be, Cod, I just might be! LOL!
I uncovered a book of green stamps from my parents place a few weeks ago. My hopes of getting that boat/car are closer now.😁
This story is bananas
😂 I couldn't resist
It's very a-pealing.
The incident probably served to drive the crew "bananas" as well....
I agree- after the fact, that's a great story! In the moment, though? Not so much.
You are a great story teller.
Your banana noise demonstration set my dogs off.
Yes we have no bananas today...
Everyone's favorite--crew and visitors alike--would be simply be in awe at the blue/red/purple day-glo in what the kids christened it as the "Halloween room" 😱💀☠👹👻👽Great video !
Great filming ambiance with the lighting
Hanging a pillow case over a LED-bulbed work light is cheaper than a studio light to offset the rigged for red light in the control room!
I remember being instructed to never stick your hand through those wheels on the one day we went to sea during sub school.
Banana Cream Pie...Oh my!
Very nice story fir sure
I love stories like these.
Thank you.
Thank you so very much for sharing and maintaining this beautiful ship!
Awesome video! ❤
Thank you for these videos!
Very cool video
Attention all compartments: Yes! We have no bananas! We have no bananas today!
Yes…..we have no bananas

Nice tale , very amusing
cool story thank you !
What a story. I’m sure the Captain went ‘’bananas’’ over this incident!😂
How about banana cream pie
Just don't ask where the cream came from.

Thanks for turning us all onto the TV show The Silent Service.

Bananas are bad luck on ships and boats! Seriously. Don't bring bananas onboard!
That story is just totally bananas! 😂
An interesting case of the truth being better than fiction.
Surprised he didn't put them in a torpedo tube. That wouldn't be a bad place to store them. On some subs people even slept in torpedo tubes.
That's Bananas !😊
On Trumpetfish (SS425) the wheels were always used.
Rig for red!
Is manual mode used when "rigged for silent mode" or is the electric/hydraulic lever system used all the time when possible?
Too funny.
Now that's funny
And said, "Kid, whad'ya get?" I said, "I didn't get nothing, I had to pay
$50 and pick up the garbage. " He said, "What were you arrested for, kid? "
And I said, "Littering." And they all moved away from me on the bench
There, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I
Said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back
"You can get anything you want..."
that sounds like a bad design
Banana 🍌 bangers
So wait, if that sub is sitting level right now in this video, why does the aft gauge read a depth of 95 and the front read 34??
They are probably no longer functional.
terrible wave action in Lake Erie? (they are not calibrated... and have not been trimmed lately!) Good catch!
Why do you not show the shaft in the shower ?
Our budget didn't include travel expenses? (next time we will!)
lol nice
