The cultural significance is huge in Igbo Culture.
Women have the right to choose who they would marry.
On the Traditional Marriage day, the father of the bride (or eldest man in her kindred if her father is dead), hands her a cup of palm wine in the presence of everyone to go search for her husband.
The lady, with the cup in her hand, begins the frantic search for her groom in the crowd. The groom is hidden in the crowd and she must go in search of him.
During her search, Several men plead with her to give them the cup to drink as once any man drinks from the cup, he is deemed her husband. She jealously guards the cup and searches throughly and once she finds her husband, she kneels and presents the cup to him which he accepts and drinks completely, raises her up and they both proceed to her family for blessings.
At this point,everyone can see who she has chosen as her husband.
This becomes a bit dicey as the lady might present the cup of wine to someone else she loves if she is is been forced to marry against her wish. More like a rebellion.
