    Odd Tinkering does this better.

      Odd Tinkering does full restorations (this channel doesn't) and OT also has the advantage of having assistance from The Ducktor.

      @@fsociety.dat101 You must be fun at parties... I think his videos are great and I enjoy the fact that he speaks through his videos in contrast to Odd Tinkering who is silent. Every person likes different things and there's no reason to be rude about it

    Just this last week I did some work on my Gameboy Color. I replaced a drabby silver aftermarket shell with a clear blue one, replaced three failing capacitors and installed a new speaker. Really love how it turned out. These are great little handhelds. Great work on getting these to look so good. The replacement screen covers make a big difference.

    I am kind of biased towards the clear atomic purple as that was the one I got as a Christmas gift from my grandfather when I was a kid. The GameBoy is definitely what got me started with playing games. Nice to see the full set of colors. That makes me happy.

    I'd reflow the legs of the main chip on the grape one. I had a similar situation once and that fixed it.

    Excellent job in particular with the Berry. Even knowing about the Expo trick, I was skeptical myself how well it would turn out, especially with the crevices of the speaker grill. Also, when you see brown residue/soda spills, that's when you bust out the windex on a q-tip. Follow by cleaning up with IPA and you're golden

    That wacky screen reminds me of something that happened the other day. I'm a math teacher and kids are required to bring a calculator, but the requirements are pretty lax, so this kid brings in his mom's TI-83 from when she was in school. 83's are a common choice, so nothing weird there. Except after a few days the screen went crazy. Numbers were backwards and upside down, sometimes there'd be lines, other times strange alien-looking symbols. Then sometimes it'd work fine. I had to research it. Apparently the ribbon cable is glued on to the screen and after a couple decades the glue wears out, which causes some crazy screen glitches if it's not connected right. Interesting choice to have it glued. Anyway, I told him he'd need a new calculator, but your backwards Gameboy screen reminded me of that. Thanks for another fun video!

      Thanks for sharing! That was an interesting story, and makes me wonder what would happen if I replaced the screen instead of the motherboard.

    Screen problems are almost always due to the connector for the LCD not being straight/solid. Checking the bail and holding the ribbon cable in place while you secure it is good practice, sometimes those bail latches get damaged.

    Nice one, and thank you mentioning us from Discord :D ...
    I appreciate your usage of magic sponge. It's such a good help on dirty cases and when used well, not destructive at all. It's also good for cleaning dirty PCBs and mostly light corroded contacts or pads. Steve showed it also in his videos. And for full plastic cases´, you don't have to be shy to put a bit of pressure on the sponge, it doesn't hurt them - even if a bit of colour is on the sponge then. I've also cleaned and removed small scratches with that method on Switch Lite for example. But you're absolut right, not to use too much force and not to use it on labels or thin painted parts - and of course not on displays and transparent elements...

    Had the "red" one as a kid, and while I'm not sure if it was intended to be red, it always looked more fuchsia to my eye. Nice to see it restored though :)

    Looking like brand new! I'm assuming the dry erase marker works because it has a solvent in it that evaporates after the ink is on the board, the solvent likely dissolves the permanent marker similar to IPA

    • @durrell246
      @durrell246 16 днів тому +1

      That's exactly how it works. It's the same ink in both, but dry wipe markers have a solvent in them while the permanent ones don't. I use them to clean labels off glassware in my lab after an experiment and it works incredibly well on glass.
