Shop Space Update 6: Setting the Gorbel Jib Crane Column

- For the week's updater Joe and I get the Gorbel jib crane column stood up and set on the mounting studs. After we adjusted it using the laser level to get it plumb. Next phase will be to grout the bottom before it can be torqued. We'll show the updates on the roughed in electrical as well.

Nice fit. You showed the template, then went outside to look at the crane. When I saw the *oversize* holes I *knew* it would fit. Knew it. Good job.

I have been watching his machining and shop videos for probably 7-8 years now and he seems like such a genuine guy. I’m a huge fan of both of his channels as my wife and I also like to travel, so he is by far my favorite UA-camr.

I've installed and overseen installation/removal of at least 50 Gorbel jib cranes in my many years of work in the manufacturing industry.
It's nice to see someone so excited about what I would consider mundane grunt work. Everything I've seen so far has been done the right way w/ a little extra care thrown in. Nothing wrong with that at all. Using a bolt through the pivot pin is the way we always do it. Good job on that.
When you go to hang the boom (arm) just balance it w/ your forks to set on the pivot pin and then shim to minimize drift (where the arm wants to swing and move on it's own.) If you don't get that right it will piss you off every time you use it.

I worked in a shop that has a drifter jib. Everyone hated using that one particular crane, but unfortunately it was one of the ones we used quite often. I asked our crane guy once if there was any way we could adjust it to keep it from going 180 degrees away from you, and he said no. So your telling me there’s a chance….! Lol

That guy needs a tap on the head. If the crane was on a concrete floor there is no reason that couldn't be fixed. That guy was either lazy or incompetent.
You can absolutely balance a jib crane so it doesn't drift away from the work area.
The mast needs to be plumb and level and the jib (arm) needs to be adjusted and shimmed to prevent the drift. It may take 20-30 min to do that but it's 100% doable.
Now, if your working on a dirt floor or the side of a mountain, that's another story and a case for a different solution.
@@josephcitizen4195 nope it’s on a concrete slab along with about 10 other jibs. It’s the only one that won’t stay put. Good to know it could just need adjusted. Not sure who the new “crane guy” is, as the one I mentioned no longer works for us. Thanks!

A true man of precision I caught that when you wiped the magnet on the level before shooting for plumb that's why I'm confident this channel is bound to make it big time!

Abom is thinking ahead; this crane will make his life so much easier & save his back -- none of us are getting any younger. When he gets this new shop up & running he should be looking for an intelligent & eager apprentice because his skill level & knowledge needs to be passed on down.
Well that went entirely too easy. That preparation paid off. Glad to see it went well and nothing got damaged and no one got hurt. Good job man.

This darn shop and especially that crane has become must watch TV for me. And it must be said: Abby’s camerawork is considerably more polished.

Everything you do is to perfection. That bolt pattern probably had a ton of play available in it for us normal folk to install, but you got it perfect for install. Amazing work and I can not wait to see this shop in action. You are an amazing machinest!!!

That space is screaming “Big Ass Fan”, maybe a 12 footer! That’ll move some air. Crane is awesome, beats a rope and pulley which I have.

Nice job on getting that column vertical.
A thing i use on some projects i'm doing the drafting for, is putting tapped holes in the base plate, so you can use bolts screwed in from the top (trough the base plate, if needed a small metal plate on the concrete to prevent those bolts from going in) to level everything. It's much easier to use a socket wrench from the top to make adjustments.

Nicely done, it's actually alot of fun tweaking the nuts to level a post. One of my favorite parts of a sign install. It just has a feeling of satisfaction knowing the biggest part is up and all that's left is the topper (or sign cabinet in my case)

I have probably installed 100 jib hoists and never took the trouble you have taken. We never grouted a single one. We shimmed columns plumb, typically with only torpedo levels. We shimmed with sheet metal and torqued the anchors. I only recall maybe half a dozen that required adjustment to correct for column plumb error induced swing. I think that I would set the rail while the plumbed column is torqued to the jam nuts before grouting. Any dynamic tested error could be corrected before grouting prohibits correction. I do not think that you will have any issues. Your column plumbing care should be good enough. My experience says you shouldn't need to shim the cross rail (beam), but ensure the column plumb is correct before shimming the beam. Jib hoists are verisitile and intuitive to use. You will love yours.
Each one of those bolts is safely rated for 20K lbs or more.. I mean the crane heavy duty but that column will buckle like a beer can long before one of those nuts or bolt even breaks a sweat.
Talking about 1/16 top to bottom is good enough... I would hate to build anything with a machinist! Out of square!
Yes. I thought he should put the beam in frist before grouting.
Is the grouting for added structure or more to just fill the gap? If it’s structural is it some special concrete mix?
When you are just not quite sure how straight and level it has to be, the easiest way to get it close enough is to get it as close as possible. I have almost always found that it's atleast close enough.

Having set a fair share of towers, job crance, and whatever else goes on set anchor bolts I can say that was done with an impressive lack of swearing.

Filming is more important to me than content. Abby's filming is good. She has gotten better and better. Oftentimes naturally in step with Adam and easy to watch. It would be hard to out film Adam but she's gaining.

You will love these cranes. I built two of them made of semi trailer axles bolted to the concrete block of the wall on the side of each door for the fuller/eaton transmission shop. They were very durable, had a Long reach and lift anything up and you could direct it right to your table from the back of a truch.
Abby we aren't gonna complain. You do a great job.
