@@tomsurber2293 Not to mention the excellent movie, "The American President", written by Sorkin that in many ways could pass as a trial run for "The West Wing". Allison Janney's role in "Primary Colors" (not Sorkin), was a precursor to her CJ role, methinks...
My favourite parts of most West Wing episodes (and I've watched them all) is the jousting between President Bartlett and Mrs Landingham. Mrs Landingham is the only person (apart from Mrs Bartlett) who can talk down to and even insult without him getting angry.
MRS. LANDINGHAM It’s your diet. BARTLET Would you get off me with that? MRS. LANDINGHAM You’re not getting enough roughage in your diet. You know I’m right about that. BARTLET I know I’d like to beat you senseless with a head of cabbage. I know that for damn sure. MRS. LANDINGHAM Once again, you display an immaturity about vegetables and I think is not at all Presidential. Would you get off me with that? MRS. LANDINGHAM You’re not getting enough roughage in your diet. You know I’m right about that. BARTLET I know I’d like to beat you senseless with a head of cabbage. I know that for damn sure. MRS. "CJ, are you taller than you usually are?" "No sir, I'm my usual height." "Okay." "Here we go." "Couldn't pick a trout out of a police lineup, by the way."
I’ve watched the series many times over the years. This is imo the best opener of the show. There’s some other great ones (Galileo 5, Celestial Navigation) but this one takes the cake. The dialogue is quick and punchy. Little bit of humor. Sorkin at his finest here.
The scene with Mrs. Laningham reminds me of a quote from another great Sorkin show. "If you're dumb, surround yourself with smart people. If you're smart, surround yourself with smart people who disagree with you."
This is possibly the best scene of the best episode of the series. Sam was great, Leo was amazing, Toby always made me smile, CJ and Josh used to have great back and forth and Jed was is beyond description. Sorkin is a genius, him leaving was a disaster for the show
0:26 Ive seen this episode a few times and on the last watching, I noticed a bit of an inside joke, foretelling if you will. They are in Washington DC, anyone who knows how to read a weather map will know..... It's going to rain.
I know this video is probably old enough to vote, but I just wanted to make the comment that the secret service agent on the left is actually looking around, assessing threats, while the agent on the right is staring straight at the camera.
Josh is holding a book titled A Necessary Evil. Per Google "In A Necessary Evil, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Garry Wills shows that distrust of government is embedded deep in the American psyche." Interesting
This is like Steph Curry throwing up 35 footers that hit nothing but the net. Or Bob Dylan writing “It’s Alright Ma.” Aaron Sorkin is showing off here, and just simply can not miss.
From The West Wing Wiki: “Sam attempts to assure Toby that it will not rain before President Bartlett gives his speech based on a report he received from First Lieutenant Emily Lowenbrau of the US Coast Guard. Although this is viewed as a goof as "First Lieutenant" is not a Coast Guard rank, it is in fact a billet and position title, held by the officer in command of the deck department.”
I've never understood why Sam always pulls ranks and names off the top of his head without writing them down. And in this case he got it wrong (twice) as there are no '1st LTs' in the Coast Guard. She'd be a Lieutenant Junior Grade
First Lieutenant in this instance regards her position, not rank. It's like an old naval tradition of referring to whomever was in command of a naval vessel as Captain, even if they didn't hold said rank.
"As I look out over this magnificent vista...is what I would be saying if we weren't indoors..."
"As I look out over this magnificent vista..." Classic.
Makes me LOL everytime!
Hey it could have been a classic hall
"Once again you display an immaturity about vegetables that I think is not at all presidential".. Gotta love Mrs. Landingham!
IT reminds me of Bush and brocolli
Every freaking line in this 4 1/2 minute scene is gold.
Will there ever be a tv series that can even approach the greatness of "The West Wing"? Probably not in my lifetime.
I agree.
The Newsroom is pretty good.
Game of Thrones?
@@billgreen3629 Also created by the genius of Aaron Sorkin

4:39 The reaction in Leo's eyes is priceless.
He could make any scene with a look - particularly when he is being called “Gerald!!”

Knows him so well -love it.
C.J. got there towards the end
I use the phrase “nothing like surrounding yourself with the best and the brightest” at least one a week in work!
The bickering between Jed and Mrs Landingham. 🤣
Young Jed in Two Cathedrals asked her, “Why do you talk to me like this?” Her response, “Because you never had a big sister and you need one.”
Just noticed after all these years that Sam put his coffee in the microwave and then forgot to take it back out.
No he did, he just forgot the speech script on top of the microwave and didn't change the first line since it was raining, after all.
"CJ, are you taller than you usually are?"
"No sir, I'm my usual height."
"Okay."
"Here we go."
"Couldn't pick a trout out of a police lineup, by the way."
"C.J., are you taller than you usually are?"
"No, sir, I'm my usual height."
"Okay."
LOL!
Three different reaction:
Toby: Oh, man!
Sam: Shit!
Leo: WTF?
This type of TV will never be seen again! Ever. It's a damn shame!

Walk and Talk was such a an amazing thing. Iove and miss this show ❤️🤍💙

"I know I'd like to beat you senseless with a head of cabbage, that's for sure." God this show.
The West Wing at its best, in my opinion the best episode from the first season.
"couldn't pick a trout out of a line up by the way!" :D

everybody needs to listen to the west wing thing podcast
I love the image of President Bartley walking with Mrs. Landingham on one side, Charlie on the other. Unknown pillars of the Bartley administration

Super writing! Love this series!
This is soooo brilliant!!!
Josh is reading Garry Wills’ A Necessary Evil: a History of American Distrust of Government
Kudos for the great eye! Never noticed that Easter Egg.
Yes, “dangling feet” used as an indication of Bartlet’ depression... the West Wing, possibly THE best tv ever?
Leo the greatest 'we cant get anything done guy', always starts with "we are weak, we cant get it done"
I love this scene.
"Beat you senseless with a head of cabbage..."😂😂😂
lol Just priceless, Toby is like "fucking moron!"
My favorite opening scene
1:06 That is just too fitting.
Some of the show was shot in Washington DC. Some of this may have been shot there.
"They use technology..." Thunder sounds, and me, I grin my ears off.
BEST SHOW EVER!
🤣 It cracks me up every damn time.
I know this video is probably old enough to vote, but I just wanted to make the comment that the secret service agent on the left is actually looking around, assessing threats, while the agent on the right is staring straight at the camera.
Sam, we all have days like this.
Josh is holding a book titled A Necessary Evil. Per Google "In A Necessary Evil, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Garry Wills shows that distrust of government is embedded deep in the American psyche." Interesting
That is as it should be! TWW was always telling us something.
Hence why they wanted to change campaign finance laws. Nice catch.
This is like Steph Curry throwing up 35 footers that hit nothing but the net. Or Bob Dylan writing “It’s Alright Ma.” Aaron Sorkin is showing off here, and just simply can not miss.
You just can't beat Sorkin.
Back in the day, you should be able to smell it if it was going to rain, and if you want to 100% verification, just ask anybody who has arthritis.
So well done...
They use ... satellites, they use ... technology.
The USCG does not have the rank of "1st Lieutenant."
A great scene and that's what you are worrying about?
Worried? No. However it's all about the details, both large and small.
Shoto Juku The West Wing is sometimes inaccurate regarding military terminology; they're focusing more on politics than the military.
And it was maddening. Even in 1999, these things were SO easy to fact check.
From The West Wing Wiki:

This is Sorkin for ya. :)
Why would the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency endorse trigger locks?
National Governors Association. Or, were you being snarky :-)
Maybe dcbadger2 heard Josh say NGIA, not NGA.
I've never understood why Sam always pulls ranks and names off the top of his head without writing them down. And in this case he got it wrong (twice) as there are no '1st LTs' in the Coast Guard. She'd be a Lieutenant Junior Grade
haha laughed a lot at the end
What saddens me about this clip is NH has some fantastic trout fishing.
Doesn't mean *he* has seen it 🤷🏾♀️
@txmoney NEVER! That was an event all its own.
0:26 first lieutenant is NOT a Coast Guard rank, if she was O2 she'd be a lieutenant junior grade
First Lieutenant in this instance regards her position, not rank.
It's like an old naval tradition of referring to whomever was in command of a naval vessel as Captain, even if they didn't hold said rank.
Ohhh I get it! The joke is wrong because Windows 7 came out! Poor Sam!!!
It going to rain? It looks like it’s going to rain?
TWW had the best f'ing set ever!
God Loves You and so do I.
Peace!
\o/
And now we're seeing Donald Trump on CSPAN. smh.
abhinav757, makes you long for an administration like this doesn't it?
Changing the nature of democracy....
Here's a nice game: imagine The Wire as Baltimore in the aftermath of the Bartlett administration. I love both series so unfortunately...
2:00
😂 love it
It’s so weird in today’s political climate watching them fret over one line of a speech.
@grumpytosnowwhite That's one reason why a lot of speeches start with a joke...
genius..
A son of New Hampshire and never been trout fishing? I don't buy it
@9claudiajenssen He *ALWAYS* had the best lines!
LOL
“Nothing like surrounding yourself with best and the brightest”
Or in trumps case, the creepy and corrupt
Ha!
Fix'd: The Wire.
