  • Celle Station in Germany has been home to British Forces since 1945 and this week the final decision on the future of Trenchard Barracks has been heard. Many infantry units have called Celle station home over the decades and for the Second Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, currently on exercise in France, Trenchard Barracks and the Germany lifestyle will be missed. Many German civilians are employed on camp, the news this week will no doubt have hit them the hardest.

After Christmas 1952 we drove in the snow from Osnabruck toCelle,to watch boxing between our RE Regiment and I think it was Rifle brigade, but it’s a long time ago.

I remember Celle as the best accommodation and standard of living but unfortunately we spent a lot of time on exercise of away. When in barracks painting vehicles that would not even start due to lack of spares.
