Software engineering is all about coding, and being creative while cyber security is all about ensuring standards, and working with the government to protect data, assets, and people.
Here’s what I learned from the video: 1. SWE involves a lot more coding and creativity compared to Cybersecurity 2. Cybersecurity is a somewhat recession proof career as it is needed in most industries 3. Certifications are helpful for making the switch to cybersecurity. I’m in my last semester of college and I have been on the fence between Cybersecurity and SWE. This video was pretty insightful. Hope I get the Sec+ voucher.
heyy, how has your journey been? and what do u do right now? i'm in my second year of college and pretty confused between SWE and Cyber security. I have a 3 month summer break right now, so i have time to decide in the summer break what i really want to do? i'd like some advice from u.
I have been really torn between software engineering and Cybersecurity but after listening to this I think I'm leaning more towards learning Cybersecurity for non coding roles specifically. Thank you Lola
U should do the coding u would literally master ur skill at cybersecurity giving a more understanding and 300k a year easily with both and will never get denied its fun to
I prefer cybersecurity over any sort of software engineering simply because of the mental comfort it provides as its remote and there’s no coding involved with certain roles hope I win 🤲🕌🕋

as a student studying computer science aspiring to work in cyber security your chanel has been so so helpful. i’ve been working heavily on coding and keeping an open mind when it comes to creativity ! as i’m just learning i think i have more space to be more creative( safely of course )so my journey of learning alongside your chanell and at school makes it a bit more fun!
Great video! I’m working on breaking into Cybersecurity (specifically Security Assurance) from a public service/Criminal Justice background. I find it difficult to find entry level roles. I’m studying for Security+ so I hope that helps me land my first role.
I have always been interested in coding. When I was young I learned web design and development. I learnt HTML and CSS and a little bit of JavaScript. I did quite a number of web site designs back then but never really continued. Fast forward to last few months I completed a program in cybersecurity and fell in love with cybersecurity. I’m now about to start another program in software engineering haha yes back to what I did earlier growing up. This video kind of reminds me of my own story. But however I’m happy to watch this video to see that I’m on the right path. I heard of react but never used it. Thank you for the video
thank you very much dear LOLA. was very confuse for the one to choose. i love both courses but your makes me right course to choose for my life. cybersecurity to the world.
Crazy how this video reappeared! I watched half of it a year ago when I first started learning to code. Now I'm revisiting it after diving deeper into cyber security and even getting my Security+ certification. The timing is perfect because I'm trying to decide on a career path - I love coding but also enjoy cyber security. Maybe software engineering with a security focus could be a good fit?
I’m definitely interested in cyber security. There are so many tech fields. I noticed you said Cybersecurity is more by the book vs software development. I’d prefer that over creativity - less room for error lol
Thank you for all the videos you make especially on tiktok, inspired me look into cybersecurity☺️. I like that you mention how cybersecurity is needed in all industries so you can get alot of experience.
Great video! I think a very important point you made was that Cybersecurity could work at any company. I am a structural engineer and got stuck in a career of designing buildings. There really aren't that many structural jobs in any given city so I had to move to different cities to climb the ladder. While their are 1000's of Civil Engineers in any given city. And Civil Engineers can just cross the street to get another job and a nice raise. Someone is going to give an example of where I am wrong. And they would be correct some of the time. While what I am saying is correct most of the time. And senior Civil Engineers generally make more money than structural engineers and have government jobs without any stress.... and live longer.
I have recently been interested in IT, thank you for the insight and process of getting an entry level and different types of certifications you can achieve to get any type of IT role.
Your Tiktok has really sparked my interest in cybersecurity and this video has really helped understanding the difference between the two. Starting off with the IBM Cybersecurity Basics you recommended to see how I get on 😆 what would you say your biggest challenge was transitioning into cybersecurity?
Hi Lola, thanks for this! This video has definitely confirmed I want to get into cyber security. I've already purchased the 2 books you mentioned in your last video now I just gotta buckle up, start the books and also watch the UA-cam videos you mentioned. Defiantly gonna get that Comptia Security + certification 😉
I love the fact that you were opened minded which helped your transition from software engineering to cyber sec and I will love if I’m given the opportunity to get the voucher as I have just finishing my msc in cyber security and I’m tryna break into the market here in the UK, thank you.
Thank you so much for this video - Would you be able to go into more detail about the non coding cybersecurity roles and what accreditations you gained to begin your journey? Also did your experience in software engineering and coding languages give you an advantage when interviewing for your first cybersecurity role?
Yes will definitely do a video on non coding roles. I wouldn't say that software engineering helped as my first role was actually non technical so what really got me through was my knowledge and showing my passion for the cyber industry was the feedback I got on what set me apart.
Thank you always for your insight and advice, working my way through the courses which you recommend, also can't wait for your tech event, will be awesome :)
I loved this as I was really stuck starting off what I should do. Not sure if the winner for the security+ has been chosen, I'd love the opportunity for it if it hasn't 😊
Please help... I'm a BSCS sophomore and I'm more on the creative side and coding thing but I'm thinking of Cybersecurity instead of Software Engineer....Since like what you said in the video, that companies needs Cybersecurity more than Software Engineer.
New here!! LOVED the video and i think you did a great job of explaining the differences! i think i am definitely a Cyber Security type of person. What certification did you start with for Cyber Security? I am studying for Sec+ and eventually want to get more of course, would love to hear your suggestions for additional certs!
This was very helpful in defining the two. I have been interested in cybersecurity since lockdown, but I don’t know how to get into it. I went ahead to get a project management certificate in 2021 and got a consultation role in projects. I haven’t been able to get into project management like I would like to. Now I’m back at cybersecurity which is how I found Your Tiktok and UA-cam. I feel like I am all over the place. Like you, I’m a very analytical person, and I like researching and looking into things. I know cybersecurity would be a good fit for me. I would ideally want to be a project manager in cybersecurity.
i personally have been on the fence a lot of between the two but your contrasts in the video really confirmed what might might be best for me! Would you say after getting the certification and passing the exam even boosted your passion for the field more?
It seems like I was too late! It’s awesome you’re giving away a voucher to this course. You talk about coding languages is this needed for entry level positions or is it more associated with medium to senior level required skill? Just trying to get in as soon as possible! Currently studying to take this exact course on udemy.
This is a great video I have been creating my own app and I have to tell you a little bit hard coming from someone that has a Masters of cybersecurity and can't get a Cyber security job, but have cyber security certifications and software engineering, certifications and cloud I just would like to know what steps can I take because I do have IT experience
sista im going to have to disagree with you on that point (11:35) WHO do you think builds the things for people like you to protect in the first place every company on the planet is using some form or shape of programming or Software that was built by a group of SE and THEN and only then protected by Cybersecuritypeople (meaning without SE there would be nothing to protect if they didn't build or fix the code with new and old software). We both need each other to keep our jobs lol. other than that great video love the content, I Love to see black women succeeding in tech!!
Informative stuff thanks! I’m on an interest in coding myself but instead of software development it’s more “web” development. Would you say that’s lucrative career or cybersecurity is NOW the big thing more companies need to protect their data? I do know that starting salary is higher on average for a security analyst though vs web developer.

Me too... exactly right.
plenty of fully remote software engineering jobs. but yea, cybsec often doesn't require coding unless you're on the automation side of it.
