  • Lost a headlight on a roadtrip, couldn't for the life of me figure out how the wire clip worked while in a Walmart parking lot with limited tools. Took the whole front fairing off and got a good look at it, as all my Googling couldn't find a single good photo or video of how the release worked. Very hard to get your hand in there and work while seeing what you're doing, so hopefully this little video helps. Honestly not too hard to take the fairing apart....20min job maybe, so this might be a better plan anyway so you know the dust covers etc. are all seated properly.

    Thank you. this helped. I was able to squeeze my big fat hand down in there and did the bulb replacement with the fairing still on the bike, only because your video showed me what I needed to do.

      wsp162 Awesome man, glad to help! I actually just got back from a big 9 day trip into the States from Canada (dear everyone reading this, do the Beartooth Highway (212) between Red Lodge and Cooke City MT!!!! It's amazing, scary, and top 5 scenery I've ever ridden!!), and lost a low beam mid-way. Let's see if my own video can help me remember how to pop that bulb out easy. :) Still don't know why they didn't just go with a tried and true twist socket style, but hey, that bike can't be perfect, eh?

      @@LifeguardVegas WWWWWWWWWWeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllllllllll.... It`s pretty Damn Close!.. Lol (72K on my lovely, badgless Akira style 99.. and love it so much I`m gonna buy it flowers tomorrow. Out of the 43 bikes Ive had over my riding career ..I have had 6 of these.. 2 199O`s, 2 1991`s a Y2K Yellow Birdie and This. It is the only bike for me. If I can ever afford a 2O14 8OO or something, I may give it a shot... but Honestly, I would miss cleaning the chain.. Lol! Sad but So True! Ive been VFR`d. A pilot`s bike, for sure. In 2o14, I went from Seattle to LA to Vegas to Boston and back.. 8OOO miles in 3 months,, didnt want to stop. Thank You Dear Mr Honda. Cheers!

    That is a bit of "Trick" to get that retainer clip off. I too, major league frustrated with Honda "we make it simple" design on that one. The H4 bulb with it's own specific tab arrangement . . . another point of contention with the headlight system. The gentleman sport touring bike, that needs complete dis-assembly of the upper fairing to achieve, and requires a unique bulb to replace. Good Post, thanks for the video, and the time you took to help others . . .

    Thanks for the video. It was taking me too long to replace the bulb and I thought it was me being inept.

    Crap, sorry for the slow reply bud. Hopefully you've got it figured by now. A standard H4 bulb will do...lemme see if I can find a quick Google link and if it'll let me post it here. Nope...have to put in video description. Look there for link.
    Picked Walmart as they're common across both Canada (where I am) and the States (where more readers likely are). Just need a generic one, you need a pair of sidecutters or tin snips to cut off the two lower tabs, and it will pop into place mint.

    That's sort of why I did it like this.... I couldn't figure it out without getting a good look at it either. I posted it in hopes that once you pull the connector and rubber cover off the bulb mount, you could feel around in there for the retainer clip, not described or drawn very well in the repair manual, and now that you see how it actually clips down, you can do it more by feel like than anything. There's simply no room to stick your head down in there to get a good look.

    Inscrutable there is a catch within the connector you must "pinch" the connector to release its grip on the bulb. Not sure which side but once you know it's there it's easy enough.

    Did the same job on my cbr 1000 f, bit easier as there's a removable panel under the fairing. Still a pain in the arse through

    I was hoping this would show me how to get the bulbs out without taking anything apart. I can reach past the bars but cant figure out how to remove the bulb socket.

    So H4 bulbs in there mean that both headlights at the same time works low or high beam

      Yes, that's correct Desmo. Both lows or both hi's on at same time.

    Found this video from VFR World.I need to do the same on my '98. What bulb do I need and do I need to trim the tabs? If so How?

    How do you get the wiring harness off?

    • @LifeguardVegas
      @LifeguardVegas  6 років тому +1

      ssmoothe2000 If I remember right, it's a pinch removal system. There are little tabs you squeeze in on the opposite sides, and you just squeeze the hell out of it, and wiggle the connector backwards off the prongs. If you can get a light in there, should be pretty obvious which is the squeezable part.

    My '00 VFR right bulb clip needed to be pushed in and to the RIGHT, not left. Huge chore to get at, while yours is off the bike. Who the heck wants to do that??? Nice for a demo, but not very realistic. Once again, Honda doesn't much care how hard it is to get at things.
