Well now that you've reviewed a game that you don't like very much... Might I recommend a game I think you will? GTFO? It's an extremely hardcore four person horror shooter? I think that's how you would describe it. Think Aliens fireteam elite, but instead of just action it perfectly blends real "Aliens" type horror with action and combat. Also on top of that, it is EXTREMELY cerebral, in fact, I don't think I've thought so much about the strategic planning and gameplay since doom eternal, and that game was close to the pinnacle of challenge based gameplay. The teamwork aspects also feel so important, this game has this absolutely wonderful system of tools that are used together in unison to deal with the horrifying threats that are coming at you. C foam which kinda works like the GLOO gun in Prey, which can be combined with the mine deployer for amazing effects, or the bio tracker, which can help the one person who has it communicate with other players to deal with the more dangerous threats, the weapons are incredibly interesting and sound and act just like you'd expect some awesome sci fi gun to behave. One of them really reminds me of the smart gun from aliens. The monsters in this game are also iconic! I don't want to spoil you on any of them but the quality of the designs remind me of the creatures from sputnik and alien. Please check this out it's really the perfect game for someone who wants a game to push them into the fun zone and hold them accountable. If this interests you at a, here's a trailer that doesn't spoil anything, while giving you an hint of what it's about.

Also I should have mentioned this because I know you love duskers. This game has a really really interesting element that reminds me of the "coding" aspects used to control your drones. In GTFO hidden throughout the vast industrial complex, there are "terminals". Terminals are, well just what they sound like, they act quite similarly to a terminal app on your computer. Every once in a while during a level, you will need to access one of these terminals and type in commands in order to complete your mission. Commands like "query" "list" "logs" "deactivate" "open" "read" "input" "ping" all kinds of really interesting faux programming aspects that really help break up the pacing without using silly "match the strawberry type mini games". And sometimes you even have to use the terminal in combat, there are certain objectives that require you to establish a terminal uplink to your command center, where you will have to quickly type in codes and and send security verifications to your buddy in the second terminal while your last two teammates defend you from a horde of enemies. Imagine typing in strings of code like "uplink_verify terminal_714 code: X07" quickly before jumping out of the terminal to help your buddies fight a horde of horrifying monsters with 8 feet long tongues covered in teeth, before jumping back into the next code. It's such a great rush!

I think the main reason a lot of people (including myself) loved Dying Light, was because it was a much more interesting version of the Dead Island games. The parkour gameplay and the night and day system added a lot to the experience. I agree with your points about side quests and crafting. These aspects if not done well can significantly harm the pacing of the overall experience. Great video, Mayo!

"It's not my job to make your game fun" been saying that for years. I'm already seeing people praise the removal of penalties for dying in the sequel, I saw one dude comment that he was happy that bosses don't regain any health after the player dies. You don't need to play creatively, using valuable resources and crafting items, when you can just bang your head against the wall until it eventually crumbles. You may call that playing in a boring way, I call it shit game design. All that said. I like the first game. It is and always was a 6/10 at best, but it's one of those 6/10 games I was always happy to return to. The movement is great, especially later in the game, and while the combat is never even remotely deep, you can still dropkick dudes off buildings and that pretty much never gets old.

    • @Snyperwolf91

Thats true. I can get behind that a life-system isnt needed in games . I can understand the people want better placed checkpoints or even Quick saves (which should be put instead of checkpoints but thats my two cents) .
But what i dont get is the unnecessary streamlining and horrible watered-down gameplay that its almost not worth to play . When people are praising that dying in a game have no penalities and you can just brainlessly beserk through the game then the game is pretty pointless to play .
What are the stakes in the game then ? Why playing good when playing badly solves everything too ? Whats the point to playthrough the game when even the story sucks (Many reviewers said that the story to Dying light 2 was mediocre at best)?
What i get from people who praise such things is that they just wanna consume and not PLAY games. Its like a football player doesnt wanna improve himself because being good and learning the rules means to put effort to it but plays football because he just wanna be in a team .
Catering to fragile egos was never a good idea and will never resulting in good stuff . But thats what gaming is going into.

Dying Light is one of those games that really makes you work towards being a badass. Once you max out all your stats it’s almost like playing a completely different game. Starting out the game SUCKS because you are so weak and slow. And I think that’s intentional. It’s definitely a game that will make you love it or hate it within the first couple hours. I was hooked, my friend was not. Some of the most fun I had was just fucking around in co-op, honestly.

Seems to me like another one of those games that expects the player to use their imagination to see it's potential, f that. @pantommy 2 роки тому +11

@@Ethan265Stapley well if you're talking about skill and effort then you clearly haven't played the game to see that Mayo did not play in the most "optimal" way. Granted, this is mostly because he didn't have any prior knowledge of how the combat truly works or how the progression system is laid out. I must agree, this game is not newbie friendly, but that being said the power curve of the game is insanely steep, so much so that you can go from struggling to kill one zombie to slashing 5 of them in one swing. Hell, the game never tells you that hitting a zombie in the knee causes it to break, forcing the zombie to limp. That's a very obscure but quite useful technique early on. Your survivor level dictates how strong the zombies in the world are, and seeing as Mayo pretty much rushed it his weapons were severely underpowered. The weapons you find or the ones that are offered in shop also scale based on survivor level, so the problem is he never even tried to get a better weapon by looting like 3 or 4 crates. Grinding can also be tedious if you don't know the optimal methods (again, not newbie friendly). I personally fail to see how the combat is clunky, it's very responsive and your hits actually have weight behind them.
Oh and also, even if this wasn't a review, the simple fact that he never mentioned the drop kick simply invalidates everything. You cannot speak about Dying Light without mentioning the drop kick.
He might enjoy DL2 more though.

The "Playing it in a boring way" Has some negatives and positives.
    On one hand,
I don't like that opinion because I feel like people miss the point most of the time. Like for the people who don't like (old) Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, or Metal Gear Solid. Namely assassin's creed in my experience. They don't like that the combat system is shallow, and that you spend most of the time hiding and jumping around on roof tops. You can't just run in, kill a guy and fight the city. Well, that's not the point. The point is to sneak, kill your target, run off. If you can't make your escape you're punished with combat. There is alot of people who say they like stealth, but can't play stealth games. Its not the games' fault you won't play the game by its rules and you get punished for it.
    On the other hand,
If you are playing the game by its rules, and it simply isn't fun, then yes. The game failed at its job. If all you are doing is running back and forth hitting buttons then running back, then yeah. Its boring. I couldn't get into mirror's edge catalyst because the open world doesn't fit with the linear parkour movement style of the original.

    • @Theviewerdude
      @Theviewerdude 2 роки тому +6

Yes, exactly. Sometimes people just miss the point and play it in a boring way.
Usually how a game is designed leads most players to fall into the "correct" playstyle. Some players just don't get it when they first pick it up.
Sure you're under no obligation to MAKE a game fun if you don't immediately enjoy it, but from another point of view, someone else would just say that you are incapable of having fun unless it is spoon-fed to you. That learning how you can adapt and learn to find the best way to enjoy things, is an overall much more enjoyable experience.

    • @pantommy
      @pantommy 2 роки тому +2

The real reason he was struggling with the weapons is because he didn't really try to get better ones, which the game encourages by throwing a LOT of rare crates for you to open on your path from mission to mission. Damage of weapons you find and zombie HP also scale based on survivor level, so if you find a weapon at level 3 and you don't use anything else until level 9, then the zombies will be too tough for you to take out with a puny wrench. The game's progression is easier when you do the minimal amount of scavenging.
Other than that, the missions are bland fetch quests most of the time, I just like how goofy the side quests are. The following though, it's pretty fun. Missions are still fetch quests, but at least you're following a clear mysterious narrative, not some stupid story you don't care about. And there's a car. A whole car.
Also I agree about mirror's edge catalyst, but I found that I really didn't have anything to do or anywhere to go in that game. Maybe that's why fetch quests are so common in this kind of games.

The reason melee combat is so "clunky" at first is to get you used to using traps/grapples/environmentals. You'll get better weapons that can kill several zombies in a single swing later on, and you can pull off some crazy stuff after you unlock all movement tech. As much as I dislike progression systems in FPS games, I have to speak in favor of this one because if you had everything unlocked from the start it would absolutely break the early game.

I disagree with the fact that it's on the game to make you play it an interesting way. You can play DOOM in a boring way. Did you watch the journalist play Doom Eternal pre-release? Lowest difficulty, not using any of the fun mechanics, just doing the bare minimum.
Fighting zombies was the most fun I had in Dying Light because the gore system and the weapon impacts were so satisfying. In Doom Eternal, you don't ever need to use the hook from the double barrel shotgun, but you still end up using it.. Why? Same argument goes for Titanfall 2's wallrun. I played through the game normally, then I saw a review saying what you said - the game doesn't incentivize you to wallrun and no point doing so. Really? I used it a lot, and there are sections when they are a must too. I don't really understand some of your criticisms.

Personally I might have loved open world games if they looked more like The Elden Ring but they usually look like a family photo, so if I play them the intended way I feel something is missing, and if I try to fill what's missing then I'm playing the wrong game. Thumper is a game where I wouldn't have enjoyed the gameplay one bit, except it looks so awesome that I played it in the intended way

@ZeroTacTIX You can play Doom Eternal in a boring way, you cannot continually succeed in Doom Eternal (especially in the later levels) playing boring. Subtle difference, but it matters. if you choose normal difficulty the game will kill you if you don't engage with the systems. Why use the meathook? Because the game gives you obvious big picture benefits to doing so, not just because it's fun but because it's effective to use it. Same goes for all the systems in Eternal, the game is difficult so that you're incentivized to play in an enjoyable way. Most players will end up playing on normal, and when you compare Doom Eternal hurt me plenty to Dying Light normal your argument falls apart completely.
Mayo played on normal difficulty, he experimented with a bunch of different systems, and he discovered that there's no reason to play well in Dying Light because punishments are minimal and rewards are meaningless because all combat can be avoided. Imagine if you could walk past all the encounters in Doom Eternal, all combat encounters are completely optional now. The game would be worse because it's not pushing you into the fun systems they made. Would you blame the players for not fighting the demons if the game was designed like that, or would you blame the designers for not pushing you into the combat?
It's totally fine if you enjoyed the game regardless, but this point is not a good hill to die on. Watch Mayo's Challenge Matters video for a more in-depth summary of what I'm already saying.

@@underthemayo I don't see a legit argument from you this time around Mayo. I'm simply using Doom as an example since you know Doom the best.
Doom Eternal's shotgun hook is completely optional, but you use it all the same, and it IS possible to play Doom Eternal in a boring way without using most of the mechanics you use.
As for the game using some effort, how is it NOT? The zombie killing has never been so satisfactory in any other game, the gore system, and the impact is amazing. And you don't get to run away from zombies in many occasions and many missions.
Also, running away from zombies is *also* fun because they have an amazing parkour system in place? Running away is the more ideal solution since the game is trying to be immersive and doesn't want you to go all Zombie-slayer.. It wants you to be a survivor! You get more ammo for your guns near the end, and there is a lot more killing you have to do. If you think the game would never amp up, then I don't know what to tell you..
Just a heads up - Dying Light starts off like a survivor's game, and ends with more action. As for the challenge matters statement, erm.... DL on Normal is harder than Doom 2016 on Ultra Violence, and definitely harder than D.E on Hurt Me Plenty. Perhaps, you should've played DL on Hard?

I was able to mod the game so that I had all EXP trees unlocked completely from the start, I could get infinite money using a duplication glitch, then I got the best gear in the game (Semi auto shotgun, the best machette modified with the best upgrades in the game and some craftable bombs). I also modded my running speed and jump height, so that parkour was no longer a problem and ramped up the dropkick force multiplier and voila, I got a save file where I'm basically playing doom, dropkicking zombies into outer space and making volatiles wish they never spawned.

I personally adore Dying Light 1, despite its faults, and I thought it might be interesting for some if I explained why. My aim isn't to convince anyone who didn't enjoy the game to change their mind, but rather to articulate my enjoyment for myself and for those who haven't played the game but might consider doing so in the future. Here goes:
    1. Dying Light was one of the first few open world games I played, meaning that I wasn't yet hypersensitized to DESPISE the "generic open world" model of looting, crafting, fetch quests etc. I think the only open world games I'd played before were some of the Bethesda ones (Fallout 3 and NV, as well as Skyrim), and though they have a similar element of repetitiveness and mindlessness, it isn't as overt as in most newer open world games. Dying Light 1 isn't as abysmal as some, however.
    2. First-person parkour is exceedingly rare to find in games, in a functional state at least, and Dying Light was my first experience with it. It's still my favorite implementation, so far.
    3. First-person hack-and-slashers are exceedingly rare as well, and though Dying Light's combat is clunky and unpredictable, it still managed to get me my "fix." Somehow the unpredictability and opaque damage system enhanced the experience for me. I think the fact that I could never count on things going to plan made the game more tense and survival-horror-esque.
    4. Dying Light was my first experience with the "zombie sandbox" and I think it's still probably the best ever created. Unfortunately for Mayo, the best elements of this-such as the vehicles of The Following (DLC), massively overpowered weapons that send enemies (literally) flying, easter egg weapons and items, etc.-are not super accessible in the amount of time he spent with the game. I don't blame him for giving up on it, and I think his distaste for the "it gets good at hour 40" response is absolutely legitimate, but that doesn't change the fact that the game has a long arc of player progression-one that a lot of players enjoy.
    5. Some of the best side missions aren't available until the late game or in The Following. Many of the fetch quests, though mechanically asinine, are actually kind of hilarious (thinking of the alcohol one in particular). Some are even easter eggs.
    6. Playing with friends is a COMPLETELY different experience! If all you're looking for is a fun romp in which to make the most of the game's absurd mechanics, or if you want to take on the most difficult challenges (Bozak Horde at low level, Harran Prison, Night Hunter Invasions, etc.), playing with friends is an absolute MUST! There are (or were, when I played) a fair amount of super high level players-or just plain hackers (one cannot really cheat, as it's primarily a co-op/singleplayer game, and I never encountered pvp cheating)-that can show new players just how fundamentally the game transforms over time, and take them on adventures they'd otherwise not have.
    7. Dying Light, being heavy on the horror elements, but quite light on the actual horror, was how I got introduced-to/comfortable-with the horror genre.
    8. The graphics are very scalable, meaning that high-end rigs can crank them up for a significant visual treat, and people with medium-low rigs like me can still experience the game with decent looking visuals and high framerates.
    9. The story, though mind-shittingly (just invented that term, I quite like it) stupid, does a fairly good job of placing the player in cool, scary, and cinematic situations. Some that I can think of right away include: the school, some of the scarier tunnels, the massive tower with the rainstorm, the Volatile Nest bombing sequence, Rais' pit escape, and the mission where you blow a frowny face out of the side of a building.
    10. The Following is probably the best non-standalone DLC ever made for any game, ever. Or, at the very least the best I've encountered. It's basically a miniature sequel.
    11. Mayo was misled regarding night activity. Yes, it is true that one of the rewards the game explicitly tells you about is higher XP, but there are quite a few missions, side and story alike, that cannot be completed during the day. Additionally, there is a huge arc in terms of how the night is experienced by the player. The first night is pure survival horror. Night by the 100 hour mark (not an exact figure, I'm just trying to say that it takes a LONG time), is a zombie fiesta just like the rest of the game, only now it's Volatiles that are getting demolished by the player rather than Biters or Virals. Taking on the most powerful enemies in the game toe-to-toe, after running from them for so long, is incredibly satisfying. Additionally, night in The Following operates very differently with the sparse landscape and motorized buggies.
    12. The regular content updates, though most are utterly meaningless, give the game a sense of constant upkeep and care that very few other games have.
    13. The Bozak Horde is divisive. A lot of people dislike it. I ADORE it. It isn't even worth attempting until you've maxed Crane's skill trees, but once he's powerful enough it turns into its own separate game. It's a roguelite-esque adventure inside of Dying Light, and though it takes lots of practice (and failure) to get the hang of it, once you can consistently survival to the final arena, it becomes unbelievably exhilarating.
    14. Best ragdoll zombies. Simple as that.
    15. Tons of easter eggs, some of which are developer exploits that can really shake up the game, especially in the early hours. Replayability is enhanced by the inclusion of these.
    16. New Game + that can actually be meaningful, particularly if you increase the difficulty to Nightmare, which was added as an update a while after launch and is absolutely brutal.
    17. Though the crafting system is dumb, the weapons that can be constructed are badass to epic proportions. You haven't experienced Dying Light until you've simultaneously electrocuted, ignited, and launched a zombie off a rooftop.
I'm sure there are plenty of other things I'm forgetting that made this game so special for me. It would be fun if I got a conversation going. In case that happens, I'd like to repeat that Mayo's criticisms are 100% legitimate, and I do not aim to undermine them, merely to add that there is also a whole heap of wonderful stuff in Dying Light, packaged in such a way as to make it a truly unique experience. It'll be interesting to see what changes are made in Dying Light 2.

Dying Light is a game I have been playing for years now. But I still remember that first start.
That weak, slow Crane with junk weapons out in a dangerous world, and I loved it.
I made it my mission to get better.
Not just to level up and get better gear, but to hone my skills in this type of gameplay.
The breakable weapon system made me treasure them, so I always used my weakest one.
Some skills made no sense to me, so I didn't use them.
I learned the map, understood the enemies, and after hundreds of hours, I finally got what I wanted.
At that point, I was a walking death dealer.
A single swing was all it took to kill multiple biters. I used the crossbow when I wanted to go silent, or the engraved shotgun when I wanted to get up close and personal with the volatiles. Day or night did not matter much.
I enjoyed the whole journey and I also enjoyed being the Grim Reaper for the undead.
But of course I can see why you may not like it either. Year is already 2023, I guess it was 2022 when this video was made.
Every year the graphics get better and the games get more realistic.
For someone who never played it before, Dying Light might look too ugly to play today.
But the first time I played it, it felt beautiful.
The map that you called uninteresting and just brown everywhere was breathtaking.
I especially liked looking at the map from a high point at sunset.
The night chases were scary and adrenaline filled. It made it so much more fun to finally kill one of those bastards.
However, yes. It is not everyone's cup of tea.

I feel like the disconnect here is in how you generally prefer games which, per your Mario 64 video, force you into their own version of Eternal's 'fun zone.' You don't want a game that allows you to play in this freeform way; you seem to prefer being funneled quickly into a sort of tightly controlled Pavlovian gameplay loop. And I get that, that's generally what I prefer as well. But I think a game like this is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, and with the understanding that you get out of it what you put into it. Yeah, you can avoid night missions (for example), but they're super challenging and the XP you get absolutely does become a boon as you encounter more powerful enemies and missions later in the game - especially if you're playing with the difficulty cranked, which you should. For games like this or Assassin's Creed or The Witcher, a big part of the experience is the stories you create as you interact with the world and attain more skills. It's pretty nice in Dying Light when you get powerful enough to mow through powerful zombies without missing a beat, if you're just looking to be funneled into the fun zone, you're not really going to stick around long enough to get the payoff.
Dying Light is a super slow burn even for an open-world game, but there is actually a pretty impressive variety of locales and the latter half of the game takes places in a totally different area - not to mention the country setting of the DLC. But it's a game that asks a lot of initiative of its players, and that's not for everyone.

I got to legend level 80-something before even getting to old town. That's because grinding, or farming as other people might say....is sooooo fun in this game. I would literally just go to infamy bridge and clear EVERYTHING. There wasn't too much skill to it but hell it was fun. That being said, when it turns into night the whole experience is sooo much more difficult. Being on the bridge with volatiles running around everywhere, switching to UV lights, to flares to fireacrakers....all whilst grappling frantically from car to car is an experience I will NEVER forget....But yes, the game doesn't force you to do that...so what? It's fun and engaging to do. I voluntarily play on nightmare to give myself a challenge so I will voluntarily do all sorts of crazy stuff at night. I remember playing coop with a friend and it was always a running joke that whenever we were about to do a side mission, I would always trick him into going to sleep first to wait for night and make the experience so much more challenging. Just because you have to seak out the challenge sometimes does not make it a bad game. Appreciate ya giving this a shot and reporting back, anyway! I just got around to playing this a few months ago myself and am currently on The Following, and I absolutely fucking love this game. I've got around 80 hours put into it right now. The gameplay loop in the base game just hooked me in unlike damn near anything else ever has, and the story actually grew on me up to The Pit where I reached peak adoration due to the downright ridiculous nature of the narrative as a whole. The Following improved on the main games plot by leaps but likely still won't make it worth checking out if the main game didn't click. Considering the games you enjoy as shown on your channel I can totally get how this might not interest you. You don't need to play over 10 hours for sure, you put in more than enough time to know for sure lol. I personally enjoy games like Dying Light where you become stronger as you play to the point of being the biggest threat in any situation.

Another note, it seems a lot of your issues are a product of how you ended up playing. Not that you’re playing wrong, just something I noticed. You felt weak and underpowered early game, which is a fair criticism but you also recklessly died and didn’t care about the survivor points. The penalty of death was different than most games, you get the cool skills and become stronger as you play carefully and gain experience. It seemed to me that those two issues you had of the penalty of death and the underpowered feeling bled into each other.
Regardless, I don’t think you’ll like the game and I’m not asking for you to play another 10 hours to decide. Go out and play games you love, play new games you’re interested in etc. Even with this in mind I just don’t think you’ll vibe with what it is considering your tastes. I appreciate you giving it a shot though Mayo!

Try Dying Light 2, that game is basically what Dying Light 1 should have been in the first place. The first game feels like a lot of good experimental ideas but implemented in a not very consistent way. In fact Dying light 1 and 2 reminds me of Doom and what Hugo Martin said in his interview with noclip "Doom Eternal destroys Doom 2016, you won't be able to go back to Doom 2016 after playing Eternal". That's how I feel with Dying light 2, I don't think I'll play the first one again for a long time, maybe never. I used to play a lot of Dying light 1 (I got to legend level 239) until Doom Eternal came in 2020 and over time i realized how heavy, inconsistent, unpleasant and sometimes garbage the first game could be and trust me that Dying Light 2 it's nothing like that. Actually the first game has a facade at the beginning of what it tries or wants to be but it doesn't achieve it and ends up being much simpler, which the second does achieve (not all but mostly) things like immersion of the night or the dark zones (something super repetitive in the first one full of only volatiles 😴), the combat that is very limited and unintuitive in the first one too (the 2nd also fixes that). Anyway, I played the first game too much because I loved the concept even though it wasn't a very good game while the 2nd already feels like a good solid game in my opinion, therefore I thought you should give Dying Light 2 a try.

I see a thing happening that you repeat again and again. When there is fun to be had in the gameplay, but it is not directly pushed by the game itself via necessity, you get turned off by that and stop there. You did that with Titanfall 2, Ghostrunner and now in Dying Light aswell. There are cool movement systems to vibe with and enjoy, that also have plenty of skills to improve in. For example now in Dying Light, I found it rather enjoyable that the objectives often are on the other side of the map, that gives me an excuse to vibe with the parkour and maybe come across unexpected things along the way.
As a different example: Titanfall 2s campaign is rather boring in my opinion, I played it 2-3 times and thats it, the multiplayer is also rather boring if you play it like a wannabe cod. If you though put in a bit of effort into the movement mechanics, test out some weapons and learn what we in the context of your channel might call the titanfall dance, then you will notice that's its very rewarding, slick, skillful and creative. Because of that, I have and still am putting in hundreds of hours into that game and still learn things to this day while having an absolute blast. Is all that fancy movement tech necessary when looking at the campaign? No, it's even disadvantageous on higher difficulties. Is it necessary against new players in the multiplayer? No, you'll be fine just running on the ground with the occasional wallrun. Is it necessary against veterans? Absolutely, if you touch the ground you're dead, if you slow down your dead, if you're not slingshotting, strafing and bouncing around corners and rooftops you're dead. But you only find that out after having patience with the game and putting some time in, even though it doesn't make sense in the beginning.
Don't always expect the game to deliver all the fun to you, try and meet it halfway and see if you maybe get pulled into the world of the game.
At the end of the day, that's just my take though and not everyone has the same opinion, taste and preferences and that's OK. Whilst I tend to disagree with you on some games you don't enjoy, I very much so agreed with your takes on the doom franchise and got sucked into the franchise because of you, which I'm very grateful for. So don't take the criticism to heart, you do you champ.😉

The overall world design might be _visually_ boring, but with some investment in the Agility skills it opens up quite a complex pathfinding with its _geometric_ layout.

It has a bit of a crafting element, but there are only 2 crafting materials, and everything is made from a combination of those, so it's very simple, but still worth scavenging to your heart's content (especially in the early game). It's all about escaping, setting up traps for the zombies and managing your resources effectively. You mostly get melee weapons and they become blunt after a while. You need to repair them. Since you got shitty weapons instead of awesome ones, the combat is tedious instead of quick and brutal and you don't get to the second half of the game with all these awesome horror side quests and the grappling hook. You can approach the gameplay of dying light in a few different ways, you chose a way that you found to be tedious and then rather than listen to people tell you about more fun ways to play it you make it out as if its bad game design to not force you to play in the "fun way" rather than let people play how they want. (I guess to prove the point that if you play games in an exasperating fashion games are exasperating.)

I was told by a friend who really liked this game that they actually redesigned the progression to take -longer- than in the vanilla game with The Following expansion. The progression was also one of my main gripes with the game as well. I put almost 30 hours in and by the time I beat the main story I never really felt like my character had gotten much better. Personally I would have enjoyed the game far more if the progression and item degradation system was significantly reduced. But I understand that it's one of the main draws for people.
One of my memories of the game is getting a legitimate real life sword from a museum and it doing less damage than a makeshift axe I had, and breaking in like 15 hits - and that was sort of when I just said "okay, whatever." And beat the game just so I could have closure on it.

Like its throwing all the quiz answers at you first and expecting you'll forget later when the test comes.

It's definately a game that takes its time. DL2 made some improvements with the crafting system and the parkour, but tbh it's a game that either you fall in love with because of its parkour or you get bored and start to hate it. Very hit or miss, but when i started exploring the more whacky ridiculous side of the game i fell in love with it. The Following is definately better than the main campaign as well. It's a mixed bag, but it's got a lot to offer if you have the patience for it. It makes sense many people don't. I started playing when I was just burned out with MP shooters and it was exactly what I needed.

Sometimes a game simply isn't for everyone's tastes.
THAT SAID, I suspect there are some issues in how you think the game is supposed to work, and there are issues with this "I'm not supposed to make your game fun" mentality.
The whole issue with weapons being shitty and impossible to kill zombies early on is intentional. That is the point. You are supposed to use your parkour to complete missions. If you have to kill zombies in your way, you have to use the environment or supplies to your advantage. Downed electrical line in a puddle? Turn on the breaker and kick the zombie in the water. Push them into spikes. Kick them off a building. Use a molotov. Throw a firecracker at an exploding barrel. These things are conveniently placed wherever you find hordes. Did you ever use one?
If absolutely nothing is around you, then you have to resort to bludgeoning them to death and running out of breath several times in the process. But if you play smart, those situations are quite limited, until you level up to handle it better.
If you were able to just mow down hordes of zombies then there's never any reason to do anything but that and the game becomes immediately stale and unchallenging.
As you level up, you unlock abilities that allow an instakill with the right set up. Land on a zombie from a height, stun it when it tries to grab you and hit a finisher, get behind it and snap its neck... eventually get a bow that kills most normal zombies in 1-2 arrows to the head. As you chain these together, the combat becomes really unique and fun. Not like other melee games where it's "press A enough times to win". There's such a strong sense of progression built into it as you're not only unlocking new abilities, but you're actually learning how to best use them and the world around you.
If you go into every engagement just trying to senselessly beat zombies to death, not caring about dying, and just constantly coming back until the same brain dead strategy eventually works, then yeah you'll get pretty bored. That's like using nothing but the starting shotgun on doom eternal, and getting annoyed when you keep running out of ammo.
The fun is in figuring out how to navigate the challenge, using all resources at your disposal, struggling to stay alive, running when necessary, and levelling up, unlocking new abilities, and becoming faster.
Of course it isn't your job to make a game fun if you're not enjoying it. But consider, games are created with a certain playstyle being the 'intended' way to play. The entire game will be crafted around this idea, fleshing out the system, while other potential ways to play, that were not intended, will be ignored, especially if they contradict. Such as, being some superhuman zombie slaughtering machine, and a very human survivor that is vulnerable.
Developers usually do not explicitly tell you how to play but instead provide hints and environmental suggestions. Such as, making zombies really difficult to kill early on, but leaving tons of traps laying around, and teaching you how to craft firecrackers. What is the game telling you there? Mindlessly bash heads, or use your environment and avoid conflicts?
Most players pick up on these without noticing. Others don't get it and keep trying to play the 'wrong' way. No matter how well a game pushes you towards the intended playstyle, some people simply won't get it without some sort of higher faculties trying to figure out the most fun way to play.
So yeah, you're under no obligation to MAKE a game fun. But do you absolutely need everything spoon fed to you? Remember when you were a kid and you were able to entertain yourself with absolutely anything using your imagination? Wouldn't you find enjoyment much easier, if you learned and put effort into finding the best way to enjoy something?
How many great things are you missing out on by not making the effort?

    • @Theviewerdude
      @Theviewerdude 2 роки тому

Also the weapon crafting system is pretty pointless. You can ignore it and it won't affect your gameplay.
Most of the weapon mods are weak, there's only like 3 worth actually using that provide a reasonable damage boost. The orange ones basically. The rest are mostly fun for the critical effects of sending a zombie flying or lighting them on fire.
And if you're playing the game correctly, the damage boost only becomes relevant late game anyways, as you won't be trying to swing your way through hordes until about then.
They could have removed 90% of the weapon mods and it would function the same.
Crafting should mainly be reserved for consumables like explosives, firecrackers, molotovs, elemental throwing stars, and ammo for arrows.

Last thing that I posted elsewhere that belongs here:
I hated Witcher 3 when I first tried it. Barely made it past White Orchard. Left a bad review, was super disappointed, didn't understand the hype. Try it again later and I've put over 100 hours into it, now one of my favorites of all time.
That's because when I first went into it, I was wanting and expecting some elaborate melee combat game. But it's not, the combat is pretty basic and sometimes clunky. The main appeals are the story and role playing elements, where it is completely unmatched. Also with a good character building and progression system, with tons of freedom to create unique playstyles.
If I had just stuck with my initial view and never tried it again, I would have missed out on over 100 hrs of enjoyable content. Which I'm still not done with, as I'll revisit it for a 3rd playthrough soon.

Bro you should stop playing these kinds of games. you say you don't like player-controlled cameras, pretty much everything in the modern era has player controlled cameras. you say you don't like fantasy-style games then stop playing fantasy-style games. I've been watching your channel for quite a long time now, and it seems to me that the only type of games you like are classic survival horror games, first person shooters and classic hack and slash action adventure style games however, even games from the modern era that still aim to appease people who like those kind of games arent enough. (You run away from games that throw info and mechanics at you. Or games that have parry based systems because you suck. We all suck at first just try and give it time) you still don't give them a fair chance because you either don't want to spend time learning the game and it's systems properly or you want the game to specifically be like another game. (Not every game is gonna be ninja gaiden, god of war, doom, or resident evil) they are all your opinions yes I get that however, it's to the point where you are literally playing games you know you won't like. If the game has good gameplay and ideas, you hate the aesthetic. If the game has both good gameplay and aesthetic, you hate the camera or side mechanics. If the game has all three, the style or theme isn't your taste or you think there's too much exposition. If you don't want to try and expand your tastes bro it's time to stop buying games people recommend or hell stop buying most modern games and wait for something to catch your eye. Im a person who believes modern games are nothing compared to the classics but not everything is bad. You just have very specific taste and that's okay. But your tastes are far too specific for you to really enjoy anything from the modern era and I think it's time you accepted that .dying light isn't the greatest and I'm not a fan boy of the series at all. In fact I agree with a lot of things you said. But these types of games aren't your style. I think you should stick to games by specific development studios or stick to indie games. They have more of what you are wanting and if there's nothing out or coming out just keep playing the old games. You want an extremely specific kind of game and keeping those preferences and biases without stepping away from them a little bit and embracing something new is just gonna hurt your experience as a gamer. You played devil may cry 5 And wasn't too positive about it so in my mind I'm like well try the older ones? They have the fixed camera, (talking about dmc 1-3) the combat the exploration but then you've said you don't like the themes and level design. liked the gameplay and hated the aesthetic so there goes that. You gotta be willing to try new things and put biases and preferences aside man. It is the only way a gamer is gonna spend their money well now.

Playing a few hours of Dying Light 2 made me feel it was lackluster compared to Dying Light 1's atmosphere and overall gameplay. It does look really nice and the environment is less rundown shacks and sheet metal roofs but there's something that doesn't quite feel right.
Firstly, they seem to go with a more cinematic approach, such as when in the first game you have the first night mission, you end up trying to survive by running away from the super zombies while the horde screams behind you and you are alone. In DL2 you have to follow a glitching NPC who is at times slower than you so you have to also wait for him to make it forward before you can really do anything yourself. It was a major disappointment.
Secondly, there's the stamina meter that is now also part of the parkour mechanic from which I had major flashbacks to Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness' "awesome" climbing and RPG mechanics about your climbing stamina. You know, those climbing areas where your stamina is just not quite enough to make the last stretch and you have to come back after finding some stamina boost or upgrade. And I'd rather just have free climb because that is more fun than constantly eyeing the stamina meter while also having to make split-second decisions about whether to climb the wall up and right or up and left to make it to the top.
Thirdly, they really fucked up the sound effect and impact of the spike traps. In DL1 when you shove or kick a zombie into a spice trap you get this loud, metallic SCHLINK! and it's really satisfying seeing the zombie in these mangled poses stuck in the spikes. In DL2 you hardly hear anything, sometimes literally there's no sound effect and when there is, it is this lame version that doesn't really have any impact. And the zombies don't get stuck to the fence in these dynamic poses but most of the time they just dangle, ragdoll there from the point that first touched the spike itself (which is usually the pelvis area leaving them hunched over and dangling). Super unimpressive and unimpactful.
Also, the netcode for coop is so poor that enemies teleport around and zombies sometimes spawn behind you into an empty room you've already dealt with.

Playing with friends was fun-ish, but even then I found it boring when I had to go to scavenge and craft stuff, it wasn't fun, it wasn't engaging and everything broke very easily. Not to mention a lot of stuff is random so you have to search for rubber and other stuff just by praying to RNG. The characters were also very uninteresting. You didn't get that far to where you have to the possibility to get the graplinghook, but once you get it the parkour is mostly not worth doing.

I think that a game which allows you to play '' in a boring way '' or in a fun way is already something good. Because it let the choice to the players to take risks or not IF they like the game and wish to challenge themselves a little more.
It's like playing Crysis in easy mode and stopping every few seconds to wait for the energy to come back so you ca be invisible all the way ( which won't work in higher difficulty)... You CAN do it, but you can dig further into it and have mad fun
