  • My Saab 900 Turbo Commander will not start by the key. When turning the key nothing happens and I have been starting it with a remote starter until now..
But now I want to try and fix that!

Yes, how true about key problems! On my 99 Turbo I once found that I could not remove the key. I cheated and paid someone else to fix it. After your video, I have no excuse if it happens again. Many thanks.

Just done it on mine…thanx your vid was really helpful..extra tips for the others: special tool for the triangular head can be done easily with a Dremel and a 10mm pipe wrench..use gummy or tape to have the right pattern saves lots of time to have the tool. before putting it back together on the Teflon base, make sure key is in and lock tab is turned so the gear shift tip is on the good side..otherwise you will not be able to move the key at all and I had to reopen everything…

Good fix. On my 1981 900 I had to drill a hole to access the release pin for the lock barrel as the early ignition and shifter assy's weren't made with the hole. It's an auto gbox not a manual though so the lockout setup is a bit different.

In the fusebox there is a round service plug with 6 holes.
One of those holes has no metal contact in it. The pin next to that has 12v at it.
If you stick a wire into that pin and bridge it to the 4th pin the ignition will come on and all the dash board light will come on.
Then momentarily connect another wire from the 12v to pin 5 and that will fire the starter motor.
Your engine will now run bypassing the key switch.

Probably late in the day for my question, I did the weld and all works except the key won't turn to the spring loaded ignition end, if I use a flat screwdriver in the slot the car cranks, it key turns the barrel, just not fully!
      Any ideas from anyone

Atleast on the newer Saabs, one additional reason why the ignition barrels fail often is dirt and other stuff falling in, and then jamming the thing up. This is a Saab problem since the keyhole is facing upwards and in a pretty low spot. This is also the reason why you shouldn't lubricate these locks, since the dirt will stick to the wet oil and jam it up permanently :D

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  Рік тому

Great work, and nice video, my Saab friend.
The procedure for to get out the ignition lock barrell is by turning the key to some degree before (to the left of) the "radio ignition position" then push in the metal rod in the hole to push in a spring loaded pin inside the hole, and pull the barrell up by the key.
If the key is missing or the key is snapped off inside the ignition lock, you have to drill out in the hole with a drill bit that fit inside the hole, then you can pull and replace the ignition lock.
If you visit my channal you will find videos showing more about the ignition/gear shifter assembly.
And also many other og900 repair videos, if you havent already seen my channal.
    Keep up the good work.
    Regards from Norway.

My brother broke the key in the ignition and I used a screwdriver to start the car. Now I have the same problem with the barrel as it gave way on starting. The barrel just spins with no accessories or starting, just spins. I have the 1991 2.1 manual do you think the same issue as in your great video. Perhaps a welding job or replacement part. Cheers John Australia.
