I think people who have genuine empathy can see through a guy who's phoning it in. Sure, Vance did a good job at presenting himself in a better light than he's been shown in recently, but it was just that: presentation. He's had a great deal of training and practice in this kind of formatted debate, whereas it's been the occasions that we've seen his natural behaviour and attitudes that have shown people the real quality of his character and lead him to be the least popular VP pick ever.
He may have got the tone right, but just looking at the substance of his answer on guns and the safety of children in schools: his response was to talk about more secure doors and windows. There's a man who is not phased at all by the prospect of children being killed by guns in the classroom.
