Senator Susan Collins pays tribute to Margaret Chase Smith

U.S. Senator Susan Collins, who currently holds Senator Margaret Chase Smith's seat in the Senate, spoke on the Senate floor to mark the 50th anniversary of the day Senator Smith announced her candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination.
On January 27, 1964, Senator Smith announced her candidacy, and in July of that year, she became the first woman to have her name placed in nomination for the Presidency at a major political party's national convention.

Hello Senator Collins. I was pleased to come upon your address by happenstance, as I searched for presentations about interesting and groundbreaking senators. Your speech was most enjoyable...it's been more than 45 years since, as a high schooler, you met Senator Smith, but the enthusiasm for public service that she inspired in you is palpable. The people of Maine are fortunate to have you as a U.S. Senator!
