    Hope this doesnt come off wrong, because I think its awesome... but I grew up with a step dad who had his own drywall business and also worked for other businesses, and then I got into drywall a few years ago, and this is the very first time I've ever seen a female drywaller. I always wondered if there was any women who did this job. Cool to see that they are out there!

      I am a female and I do remodeling, plumbing, etc. and I use drywall stilts all the time. The only reason there is not more woman in the trades is because of people who think woman shouldn’t or can’t be in the trades. My father was a mechanical and electrical engineer and my grandfather was a carpenter. So i was born with the skills. After college and many years in corporate America I decided to start my own remodeling business because it’s what I spent my life doing. Even my husband can’t do what I do.

    I have been in drywall for 30 + years. Stilts are illegal in most states. Why? Because when you fall hard your done for the rest of your career.. Guys get impaled by conduit. Break Knees .. Fall down stairs..trip over cords.. forget concrete floor transitions ..The way to work around them is a perry scaffold and roll, use long handle extensions for tools. I have made lots of money without stilts and never recommend to anyone to use them . Workmans compensation and Osha do not like stilts on job sites or people working off stilts. And if you fall..drywall shorty is not gonna pay your bills..

      As a fellow drywaller I respect your experience and advice. I will say my old boss, a hanger and finisher of 40 years still used stilts before I left him (granted he didn't walk on the high stuff but still, he used em). And he had nothing but the utmost concern for everyone's safety. One time doing steel studs I slipped and got myself. Lead called the boss and told him, he said "what the hell are you still doing there? Get him to the hospital". I understand, you can get hurt bad on stilts and more so on a messy, unorganized jobsite. But for some us, it does speed up the work, we make more money, and we know how to walk on em.
      I also don't endorse people walk on them. I'd never let a family member or friend walk on mine, I don't want anybody getting hurt.

      @@TheOfficialDjProduct The problem is this . The boss is happy when you use stilts and you can reach and work faster . However if you get a life altering injury from stilts ..insurance is not going to cover and workmans comp will not cover that injury. Then you have to retrain , rehab and pay alot of money to get back to square 1

      Depends on how tall you want. 16 inches could take a couple days. 24" could take 4 days. 30" could take a week. I'm literally still working on hitting 40", can sorta do it but getting any work done makes it more difficult (focusing on doing work vs just on walking). To be fair I haven't been training to walk at 40" but I've been walking on stilts occasionally for a couple years, just now though I gotta step up my game. Should have 40's done in another week or two.

    Just gonna put this out there. I am a female as well and use stilts all the time. I actually have the marshalltown skywalkers 2.1. Brilliant design and it’s a pity they stopped making them. When I first got my stilts, I learned very easily. I luckily have never fallen down in 15 years. But I felt like my knees were going inward and I didn’t like the way it felt. So I actually put the stilts on the opposite legs and it felt much better for me. Nowadays they actually have dually stilts which have double supports. Guess I am not the only one who doesn’t like the support poles being on the outside. The only issue is that the leg straps can touch each other but I don’t care because i feel a lot more comfortable wearing them the way I do.

      Did you had any health problems with your knees or lower back? I've heard they can cause lower back pain over time

    • @Hachiro
      @Hachiro Рік тому

      @@paulk1249 My guess is that would be from the job itself. (Looking upwards or reaching higher on a vaulted wall.) Taking breaks is probably super necessary if you're on stilts all day.
      I installed a receptacle box for my brother in law's garage, to put a GFCI outlet before we added more outlets to the walls. Just 20 minutes on the ladder, looking slightly upwards, made my lower back super stiff. It hurt to climb back down, but it was back to normal after a minute or two of not arching backwards. I should've moved the ladder back a bit, and stood on the next rung up so my work area would've been more level with my torso, instead of above my head.

    • @TheOfficialDjProduct
      @TheOfficialDjProduct Рік тому +1

      @@paulk1249 After wearing them for 6 hours or more you'll feel it in your feet. Your legs get tired. For me, my belt with suspenders is what kills my lower back. Belt without power tools weighs 17 pounds, wearing that 8 hours a day and some days on stilts will do it.

      But realistically you'll just kinda plomp down on a ladder rung or sawhorse, although the tipping back when you're 3' off the ground is a weird feeling to get used to. . .

    • @TheOfficialDjProduct
      @TheOfficialDjProduct 3 роки тому +2

      If the stilts are low enough that you could stand on one leg, have the other still strapped in, and stand upright, you can undo one, then putting the same side arm at the top of the unstrapped side you can balance yourself and step down. I'm pretty tall, on 30 inch stilts I can reach 10ft with like a screwgun or finishing knife and I'm able to step off (seen guys who unstrap both, using arms holding stilts for balance, then jump off). Never needed much higher, but I think if needed you could unstrap near a ladder, then step on the rung, undo the other one and your golden.

    In the early 70's we used to screw an old pair of slip-on shoes onto the stilts. The only straps we used were the leg straps. We would just take off our boots and slip into our stilts.

    • @TheOfficialDjProduct
      @TheOfficialDjProduct Рік тому +2

      The strap on your shin is always fastened first because with it fastened, you can stand up/balance without the fear the stilt is going to kick out away from your center and you eat cement. Same reason you undo it last. Undo the feet straps (with shin still strapped), you can literally still stand up. If you undo the shin first and it kicks out, you're ankle is going to bend in a not so fun way and you're gonna hit the ground, probably messing up your legs, hips, and anything above the waist is just icing on the cake.
