  • Cologne, March 06, 1945. The famous tank duel at the cathedral during the battle of Cologne was filmed by cameraman Jim Bates.
Due to many blurred pictures and the very short duration of the movie sequence showing the escaping crew (17 seconds) it's not easy to see all the details. It's hard to recognize and understand what happens in only a few seconds.
I digital worked over some crucial sequences of the famous Bates movie. With this compilation you can see this 5 crucial scenes close up, in slow motion and not that blurred as the original sequences...
The first time you really can see everything what happens in this movie sequences showing the escaping german soldiers.

Today we know this records concerning the dead commander are wrong. A Cologne journalist found the commanders family two years ago and they said he survived this tank duel and the war. One or two other crew members survived too. It probably was the gunner or the loader they found dead in the tank the next day

I visited your website. Great work. It is very graphic, showing heroism and victims of war both sides. Several families lost their loved ones there. I agree w Mojave888. War sucks.

The journalist has published a DVD about the last war days in Cologne and this story is a little part in it. The DVD was published in German only...
For more info about the tank duel look for the link to my website at the end of the video ...

@Brendan hunt The panther shown in this video was taken out by the only super Pershing used in world war two.

No it was not. The one that took this Panther out was a T26E3.

@The Great Memery no it wasn’t a 76mm but a 90mm. Read the book “spearhead”, there is a whole chapter about this very tank duel. Cpl Clarence Smoyer was the gunner of a m26 pershing armed with a 90mm gun. He is the one who killed the Panther

Man, sorry for the stupid question, but, why keep shooting if the panther crew was already fleeing and the tank was almost destroyed??

What i can suppose is two things.
1st: The Pershing crew was nervous so they didn't saw the crew bailing out, what is compreensive cause the smoke was everywhere in the tank.
2nd: they shoot until the tank was completely disabled, the first shoot was underneath the turret, maybe cause they shoot while moving, and the other shots where in the turret, maybe cause the turret was pointed on his tank and he was trying to disable the gun.
Let's get a 3rd thing: maybe they were just doing what everyone in sense would do in the same situation, shoot the bastards until you think it's done...
Hey i want to say something about the Panther shot at the Sherman, everyone defend the germans saying they were better than the americans cause they just shot one time at the tank, so if you think for a moment it's easy to understand why, as we can see at the video the Panther was alone and probably not with a great amount of ammo, so they needed to make every shot count, and that was what they did...

The American tank commander. in the Sherman. had his legs blown off and he died shortly after in a bomb crater nearby. War sucks.
