Nao sou um grande fa da banda, mas me emociono toda vez que vejo os trechos daquele rapaz brasileiro chorando em "The Spirit Carries On", porque ali se percebe como a musica "fez efeito", e tocou no fundo do coracao do cara. Dream Theater should be an instrumental band only. And im one of their biggest fan but Labrie destroys every song live.
3 years after loving more and more to DT, Me myself disagree with this comment, Labrie is the perfect singer to this band. I am ashamed of myself for what I wrote. Perfect band, perfect songs, every musician in the band, now again with Portnoy, they are perfect in what they do.

I just want to throw this out there. I saw DT live in LA for their performance of The Astonishing, and Labrie actually sounded really good! not just saying that. Im normally pretty critical of his singing, but he genuinely sounded great. I think he was sick or something during Wacken.

In this same gig, he plain sucked in the first songs (before 1998 ones), but when he sang Panic Attack, Constant Motion and Bridges In the Sky he was a lot better. Almost as if he didn't warm up his voice, and as if he can't reach the notes in the old songs anymore...

That’s not an excuse :(. Musicianship is a day-to-day job. Look at how Petrucci and Myung’s performance: FLAWLESS. It’s not like they’re not aging, it’s just that the rest puts up the work to keep being good and imrpoving.
@@GabrielDiaz-nh1nt It's not like Petrucci and Myung have used the same instrument for 30 years of crazy touring. Labrie's vocal chords can not be replaced.

Just for all of you fan boys who still believe the food poisoning incident: Food poisoning, vomiting etc. doesn't cause permanent vocal damage. Bad singing technique does and that's what people have witnessed in this band for years without knowing it.
See, those fanboys will never admit it, that's what separates them from the real fans, who are not afraid of criticizing their band when it's due.
But even people who don't listen to DT, say they respect their musicianship, but just can't stand LaBrie's vocals. As their long time fan, I totally get their point.

Also, his voice didn't start losing form dradtically until like 2004, nearly 10 years after it happened.

@@davidholmgren8156 That was a partial reason for sure. Touring schedule and workload on DT was massive. But he had very rough technique in the 90's, he let vocal cords pop constantly from hyperglottal screaming. He tore them apart with loud shouting in pitch, basically.
He had a massive and unique voice, but for some reason he chose to rasp everything and top that with food poisoning and singing after that while being still in recovery finished the job on damaging his voice. I'm not even surprised if he coughed blood after some gigs during the 90's.

Damn... How hard is to stand LaBrie's voice, I'm sorry for him and the band, unfortunately he's not singing good at all.
But His technique is good here,and He doesn't misses a single note,I think the problem with Labrie is and have always been His fucking diction,I can't even understand what He's singing and its annoying,that problem can be solved in studio,but live it is impossible.
Not at the same level of His mates anyway.
+tonykratos Yeah, well, is not that he technically fails, is that he keeps the same screech through all songs, and if you listen to that whining for more than 30 seconds, it's annoying, but you are right, his technique is fine... He just needs to tone as the notes actually are.

I saw them live on the Dramatic Turn of Events tour and he sounded great.

God, some of the most amazing metal bands play at Wacken and these crowds just freeze to death. Suddenly "The spirit carries on" plays and everybody acts like teenagers at a Justin Bieber concert. U guys are weird as fuck.

LaBrie's voice has been slightly touched up for this pro-video. Can hear the difference when you watch the raw live stream. That being said, this is my favourite version of Afterlife, i love James voice here and Petrucci is off the fucking chain!

@@adriansmith76 it's the same vocal but the mix has been done far better. I was there. DT were awful that day to be honest. I have never been one to debate the Portnoy stuff but one thing i would say is that Portnot would never had played that setlist. It was a 30 year celebration and the tour was festivals.... this set was full of the wrong songs for any festival.
James Labrie seriously needs to take it down a step & give up on trying to yell the high notes

Mano o problema do Mangini é que ele é baterista, músico de estúdio ou então de apoio a artistas bandas em turnê ou seja músico contratado sendo assim o cara não cria identidade musical e afinidade com banda nenhuma, tecnicamente ele é um baterista indiscutível apesar que ainda tenho uns parênteses aberto com ele, como por exemplo acho ele mão de alface pra caralho e acho que não tira, extrai o melhor som do instrumento falta pegada mas no geral é sim um puta baterista claro nas suas devidamente proporções e lugar.

Mangini is a great drummer..i'm sorry but nobody has the feel and the groove to play drums like Mike Portnoy with this band...there is nothing to do!!!!!
Mangini's not helped by the way his drums sound either- they don't have Portnoy's natural timbre and dark tones.
He's a technically astonishing drummer, but his playing doesn't half sound lifeless at times.

I’ve been a DT fan many years, have seen them live 4 times but am continually disappointed by the vocals both live & on record. So far below the quality of the musicianship it’s embarrassing.

DT should just drop off LaBrie. Stopped listening to them after Portnoy left though. The magic was gone for me after that.
I don't know why this "supposedly supergroup" never impressed me in any way. never! ;( maybe I am not literate enough musically or is just because of the vocalist "James LaBrie" (don't like his syle and tune).
You will find the community divided on the singer, he's quite frankly awful, also the original drummer seems to be missing *I haven't kept up on the band* but the singer should have been let go 30 years ago, he's one of the reasons i have remove in the meta data for the live performances in my music library.. You can't have this level of musical talent have have a singer this bad, it's just to bad they stuck with him so long knowing he was the bands greatest weakness.
