    Years ago, I was criticised for hiring a man who was 60. He was an excellent worker, much better than the youngsters who had been in the role previously.

    Hahah...my two pet peevs...people who say 'how nice you retired early' (I was only 49 when I had to stop 'normal' work)....and... 'you're so lucky you don't need to work anymore'.....GRRRR!!!!! I work harder than ever but the difference is I love my work now. No pension (far too young!), no benefits, living by my own wits. And it's great (but hard work). Go us!

    Hello Jane, very interesting video, I am 53 and have worked part-time as a dental receptionist since I was 29. I work for a corporate dental company and the practice I work in has mainly an older work force and in the last few years we have had a new manager who also runs another practice with a younger vibe - I have been appalled by the age discrimination we have been subjected to in the form of putting us down, telling us we are not good enough, laughing at our computer skills, and totally dismissing our many years of experience, dental knowledge, wisdom and strong friendships with our loyal patients ( who incidentally they also dismiss as we have a mainly older patient list due to location and the fact that we are a private practice ). Unfortunately all of this has left a lot of us in my workplace finding our confidence has dipped drastically and made us very unsure of how we’d fare in the employment market. I think if the government wants us to work more they really need to engage with the older workforce and put much more help in place and not just look at the professional workers who I imagine may have a very different outlook.

      That’s so bad! If you have an HR department I think it would be worth complaining. It’s usually simply ignorance and younger managers should receive appropriate training. It’s awkward though!

      I’ve never liked dentists, they’re strang lot. I also witnessed a dentist making disrespectful remarks to a young dental nurse. They’re failed doctors, hence have a big chip on their shoulders!

    I will be 69 in a few months and I am still working full time. Mentally, I am just not ready to stop. I have a 1 hour commute each way so I am away from home 11 hours a day. With my job I have great benefits. Don't want to give that up either! The one thing I would give up is the commute.

    Reselling - As the saying goes, "if it was easy, everybody would be doing it" That is one of the capitalist paths.
    1. A new thing comes up that nets someone a lot of money
    2. As long as there's significant money to be made, more and more people start doing the same thing.
    3. There comes a point when there's so many people in the work that everyone is just getting by.
    4. if more people join, at this point, the market is over saturated and not profitable.
    5. Then the sector contracts again.
    To stay out of that trap, one needs to keep being unique.

    • @ShoestringJane
      @ShoestringJane  Рік тому

      That’s certainly happened with reselling. Although I’m definitely not trying as hard!

    This was v interesting, thanks for sharing. I've been out of work for a long time after being signed off due to severe depression mostly. I used the time to recover, volunteer and retrain as a designer/illustrator. I'm ready and need to return to work now and I've been trying to decide whether to put everything into going self employed or whether to get a part time job to live on plus my design business if I can make it work. I can't work full time as it tends to make me relapse. One issue with not having a full time job is not being eligible for a mortgage. If housing was more affordable in this country life would be so much better for a lot of people. There's lots of things to consider, I'm going to journal about it this week.

    Hi Jane that was great I love all your different income streams and a really interesting video. I watch while ironing on Sundays so always all the way through🙂 I think you probably do well with the writing as you say you have experience in publishing in the past, how wonderful. It is also nice that you can enjoy your new home to yourselves. I have a blog (not monetised) and my youtube channel is creeping towards the 1000 subs but it will be a while before I have the required watch time. So as you say those things take a lot of time, I make clothing from start to finish in some of my videos so a day there before editing so I understand you when you say you are not doing three a week for very little return. That was lovely Jane. Like a chat over coffee with a friend. A bit one sided chat, but I've got the coffee.! Actually during the duration of your talk I washed up,iced some fairy cakes (I refuse to say cup cakes) potted up some plants and wrote my shopping list! This sounds boastful but it's not,it's a curse. I'm 68 in a weeks time but I only look about 48. That sounds wonderful but it's a curse because I'm sure some people in my neighborhood think I'm " on benefits" but then my life is none of their business. The thing is if someone is legally retired aged 50+ but under 66/7 they are not claiming benefits. They are paying for their life and their lifestyle with THEIR OWN MONEY. They were lucky enough to have a good paying job and good pension set up and lucky enough to have a shrewd mind probably both together. I think it's disgusting for these Tory pirates to criticize people whom have obviously worked both hard AND smart. And to call people,me, anyone an economically inactive unit is disgusting. Theyll be calling us Useless Eaters next. The labourer is worthy of his hire. I hate it when people expect free stuff but for them to be well paid. Like people who expect a trained gardener to cut their hedges, trim their lawn, and weed their borders for £5 and a cup of tea. People who (really) think the childminder should look after their toddler for free because it's only looking after a kid,it's not managing an office,or doing city trades or producing tv shows,or,well I've met those people, they are real! Resuming my other point, anyone over 50 but under 66 not "retired" and with no independent money to live on which is most people is a "job seeker" and they will be harrassed, hassled and not given a moments rest. I had a brief experience of this when my Mum died aged 91 and as I was her full time carer I got this treatment. It was horrible but God sent me a job within a couple of months. I say that because the much vaunted "help and advice" is just sitting you down at a computer screen and expecting you to stare at it for several hours and when you dont even know how to turn the bloody thing on......but like I say,I did not find the job,the job found me. It was early morning cleaning at my local big lifestyle store. It was the most enjoyable job as it turned out. Great people, challenging and active,a daily workout but most fun because I only had to do it for 4 years. My boss told me I could stay on into my 80s,90s if I wanted but no way,as soon as I hit 66 I was outta there. I've never based my identity or my personal worth on my job, work or occupation.

    Hi Jane, I have subscribed to you for years, but today, I found that I had to click the subscribe button again. How odd . I try to sell stuff as well, mostly my things, but I have come across items that is very cheap, and I have resold it online. I am working part time in an upper secondary school, and this spring I will pick up some shifts as an examination invigilator. I have not done a whole day before, just stepped in during lunchbreaks. Can be somewhat tedious work, but it is good money. Many schools stuggle to find enough invigilators, so I recommend it, and since you are close to a University, call them up and ask if they need an invigilator. So much easier than having a lodger. And, it can be a year round thing, as people are taking exams and tests not only in spring. 💕

    Hi Jane good video. I'm 60 and work 3 days a week as a cleaner and that pays basic bills. Luckily paid mortgage off. I have never been to Scotland so this year I have booked a week in the summer, air b and b little cottage and cant wait. This will be my treat for the whole year. Next year I want to go to Ireland, never been and my parents are Irish sadly they are dead now. I know I will really appreciate this holiday. Simple things, best things in life I agree. I love to bake, sew, garden walks with groups of friends. Also work as volunteer giving energy healing at a healing centre, that brings great pleasure. Never cared about the Jone's or what people think of me. Never read country life mags, does not interest me. As long as Im loving and kind in this life thats all that matters. Im not materialistic either. I do love my home and the company of friends but also my own space. I hope you get to go to Scotland too.
