Thank you so much for posting this! I'm in the middle of building my own Melanesia right now, and this beautiful video is great motivation.

I think this might be the hardest sailing Wharram Melanesia video. I see a bit of bailing was necessary. I think I'd add a above the waterline so it can be self draining.

Hey there, great video, and really well put together boat. I have one question. Would you be able to mount the main sheet block and track in the centre of the proa so it wasn't snagging on you? Is there a reason you wouldn't do that?

Share the invaluable experience of building this prota type can you? I'm interested in the length of the width and height of the canoe? And how to attach the sail from below?))))

Looks great going down wind, but the are crap going to windward. Give me a modern cat anytime.

Overkill on the mainsheets. One line would suffice!

It does seem so cumbersome. I have seen traditional canoes with a similar sail and (could be remembering wrong) I don't think it even had a main sail line but used a stick.(edited) he had one line that anchors the sail and one to the top of the mast which he moves to the other end of the canoe to reverse directions...wanna see where it all began ?

Pak De You’re referring to a shunting rig. A true proa. The outrigger always stays to windward. The boat shape is symmetrical fore and aft because, you’re right, the sail is switched ends and the bow becomes the stern and vice versa. This is a tacking rig in this video. I’m starting a build of this one myself but I believe the idea behind the blocks on the mast is you will always have one hand busy with the steering oar as there’s no rudder. Mechanical advantage. May be overkill. Idk. But his boat is very well balanced as these are very sensitive to weight distribution and the location of the mast head (front to back) and mast step (side to side). Cheers.
