The first step is to find your inspiration, I’d recommend checking out sites like Dribbble or Behance to see the latest trends in flat design illustration.
Try to come up with a concept and have an idea of what the illustration should be about from the start.
Then the next step is to google photo references, in my case I’ve looked for a portrait and found one on 500px: 500px.com/photo/1039144139/in...
Using lower transparency you can overlay two or more images to use as the base of the illustration and then using the Pen Tool start drawing the outlines for the illustration.
In this Illustrator tutorial, I’ve used a width of 4 points for the outline of the illustration.
The final step is to add shapes behind the outlines and choose a color scheme. For this flat illustration, I’ve used the following colors:
Dark green: 2B9312
Lime yellow: CBED00
Satin red: F22556
