    Nice to see people appreciate the innovation of the 90’s, especially the cheaper stuff that some breeze right over. They are all amazing out of the sleeves.

      I know some would disagree with me, but a card doesn’t have to be rare or valuable for it to be historically significant, hobby significant, or fun to collect. I bet I get more enjoyment out of a $1 Denny’s hologram card than many “serious” collectors get out of many of their pickups! Plus, the added advantage of not having them slabbed up - I get to take them out of their cases and “play” with them! These shiny cards - They really do look better naked.
      Thanks for the kind words, Bill!

    I have several of these cards in my Todd Helton collection. I had not heard of the dot matrix technology like on the Power Players.
    Love the hologram cards from Upper Deck SPX. Great video.
    I peel all my personal collection cards. 😊

      Awesome! Yeah, if it’s a PC card that’s not ever leaving your collection, or if you want to grade it, go ahead and peel it to enjoy the full shine! If it’s a card you may want to sell later, it might make sense to leave it on. Thanks for watching!

    I was hoping the Greg’s hologram yay or nay sequence would continue!! Fantastic look at some non-refractor versions of shine Brian! Even just a little rainbow foil goes a long way. The 90s were so great!

      Thanks, Joe! Yeah, I was worried I took that happy Maddux / sad Maddux bit too far! 😅
      I think we often forget how even the smallest of innovations was still BRAND NEW at that time and hadn’t ever been seen before. When 1991 Leaf had their Gold Leaf Rookies set with Todd Van Poppel (and of course Nolan Ryan’s tribute card and Rickey Henderson’s too), the hobby hadn’t seen gold foil applied to cards prior to that moment. Stadium club’s inaugural issue would see this again, as would the 1992 Donruss Diamond Kings, but we forget that compared to what else had been released and was available at the time, that was a MASSIVE deal.
      And the introduction of the refractor… that may as well have been similar to the first time Technicolor was dramatically revealed during the Wizard of Oz debut! What is already a stunning effect gets multiplied by the fact that it’s brand new and had never before been seen.

    Great walk down memory lane. I was a Griffey guy so unfortunately all of my cards were typically the most expensive in their respective sets

    • @HighPopProfessor
      @HighPopProfessor  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, that’s rough! I love Griffey too, but I’m also really glad that my main guy is way cheaper than Griffey. The affordability of Maddux means that I get to chase a few higher tier cards that would be completely unrealistic for me if they were Griffeys. I may do a hobby numbers video on these “Pareto players” and talk about the phenomenon about how Griffey is 8-10x the value of Frank Thomas and how Mantle is 8-10x Musial even though they were similar caliber players. Thanks for watching, Drew!

    Brian, this was awesome! School is in session for me as I start to learn more about the 90's shine from the High Pop Professor! I do not know if you intended the truly outstanding double entendre in your channel name, but the "pop" can either be short for population or represent a card that "pops" because of the shine bursting off of it's glorious surface! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 On a lesser note, when a card "pops", it becomes more pop-ular! 😂

    • @HighPopProfessor
      @HighPopProfessor  2 місяці тому +1

      What a great point, Adam! These cards certainly do have a high degree of “pop” to them! That entendre had not been intentional, but it certainly fits my channel’s content quite well!
      So much about this time period in the hobby can be confusing even for me, so I can imagine just becoming introduced to this era and trying to figure out the difference between 97 Pinnacle Certified and 97 Pinnacle Totally Certified. Or the 98 Donruss Fractal Matrix set vs Fractal Materials with all their X, Y, Z, and Z^2 axis die cut parallels. It can get overwhelming even for veteran collectors to suss out just how many distinct Greg Maddux cards even exist for a given set.
      I suppose that’s one reason I tend to hear the collecting advice for people to “stay in their lane”. While depending on how that phrase is said, it could come across as a bit rude, I think it’s generally meant in a “watch out for yourself” sense. No one wants anyone to get ripped off somehow because maybe you’re not familiar with the 68 Topps vs the Milton Bradley version. There are some things that you just won’t be familiar with if any era is brand new to you, so I think it’s fine to change lanes, but you need to check your side mirrors first! 😂

      @@HighPopProfessor Brian, thank you for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response! We can change lanes or add a lane! Some of us have 18-lane collecting freeways! 😆😆😆

    Agree about Pinnacle being maybe the best / most innovative company in the 90s!
    I actually don’t have too many Pacific cards in general, but there are some amazing 🌈 rainbows 🌈 with 99 prism and also Cramer’s choice. I’m not sure that Pacific invented the rainbow though… I don’t count “bronze, silver, and gold” as a rainbow, but I do count Mirror Red, Mirror Blue, and Mirror Gold from ‘96 Select Certified. Maybe there’s something earlier that I’m missing though.
    I hear you about lamenting the lack of innovation in today’s cards. Hey, the “Tacofractor” was an amazing gimmick (if not innovation) in some sense, but there have been a few cool legit things they’ve been doing recently, like the MLB debut 1/1 patches. I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom, but I do miss the 90s innovation that seemed to leave us perpetually asking, “I wonder what they’ll come up with next??” Living through the 90s baseball card boom was almost like walking through Willy Wonka’s factory with a surprise around every corner.
    Thanks for watching, Allen!

    Hopefully people can appreciate you demonstrating examples of and the depth of cards from the “high pop” era while also appreciating your extensive super collection of Maddux.
    My favorite “technology” of the era has to be dufex. While most of the refractors of my Ozzie Smith collection are more valuable, I think the dufex cards are cooler.

    • @HighPopProfessor
      @HighPopProfessor  2 місяці тому +1

      YES. I LOVE Dufex. I’m working through a Dufex run for Maddux, so I will certainly showcase that later when it gets completed! I’m still missing a couple though, but it’s a shame that the Dufex technology has sort of been lost after the Pinnacle bankruptcy. Interestingly, both Topps and Donruss had Dufex releases after 98. Topps had an insert called Dreamcast in 2000 Finest that was a gorgeous Dufex and then Donruss wrote a love letter to Pinnacle in 2005 when they revived the Zenith brand and tried their hand at Dufex. So, Topps could still make Dufex cards today if they wanted to. They just choose not to, which is sad.

      @@HighPopProfessor I recently picked up the 1993 Pinnacle Cooperstown Card of Ozzie Smith that was not pack issued, the last I needed of his dufex cards. My favorite are the 1995 team pinnacle with him and Ripken each having a dufex side. Good luck on your Maddux run and looking forward to that video.

      @@jon-eriksuermann9844 Oh, I remember those ‘93 Cooperstown cards being sold as small boxed sets and I also remember the rare circular Dufex pattern on those as well. I forget how the Dufex were released / seeded, but I just remember them being really rare! I think they may be the first ever Dufex cards created, even before the gorgeous green 93 Select all stars inserts.

    Congrats on the Peel! Those look amazing peeled. Pinnacle is definitely one of my favorite brands, especially the bankruptcy years.
    I thought you would bring out some Pacific, the inventors of the 🌈
    This episode also makes me kinda sad. There just isn't innovation going on in today's cards. It is just the same as it was 30 years ago. Compare a 60s card to the 90s, clearly progress. Then compare a 2020s to the 90s, they added tacos...just what collectors always wanted
