Hello! I just really want to say thank you for all the Pacific War videos you produce. They are simply amazing! I'm from Ireland myself, but I have always had a great interest in the Pacific Theatre of WW2! I especially love how you are covering the early Japanese advancements, of which there is not much readily available information to dig into for someone with a casual interest on the topic like myself. A perfect example would be your video on The Battle Of Borneo. Your coverage of the battle taught me so much more than I had already known! I do hope you continue this series covering many of the Pacific Engagements, minor or major, both would be amazing! If that is not part of your plans, no problem, your content has still earned a subscription from me! :) Thanks again!

this series is the best ww2 doc series by far and believe me ive watched 100s of them them i just think they should make more in this format about the eastern front
@@spaceman5528 This is an interesting point. Let's assume there was no war in Europe. What would Britain have done if it was invaded in the same way at the same time? They still wouldn't have had enough forces in the theater to change the outcome. But they would have been able to shift forces the following year and help the Americans.
Yes, a strategy of defending a naval base where there were no ships was pointless compounded by a strategy of defending airfields where there were no modern aircraft and not enough men to do so anyway. Someone should have made the decision to evacuate Singapore early on but Churchill had backed himself into a corner through his repeated assurances to the Australian government about the state of Singapore defences. See John Curtin's infamous "inexcusable betrayal" cable to Churchill in January 1942.
Well I believe they could have maintained Singapore or even much of Malaya if the British changed their priority although to be fair Japan does not concern them as much as Germany. Yeah they're f*cked.
Excellent discussion of the issues and good research, with enough details to satisfy the war geek and the college student alike. In fact, I'm going to recommend it to my students.
WOW, I thought I knew about many of the operations in WWII. I am amazed all the lack of foresight but can understand it because of the panic Britian had when everyone in the world never thought Germany could beat France let alone Britian and France. Love it ty so much for the Vid. I learned a lot.
Yesterday is 12 Feb and it is the anniversary of Singapore's surrender. Thank you for this video. There are lots of leftover fixed emplacements. Where I work there is a machinegun pillbox and Sentosa has many of them on the beach as well.
Imbalance of power in the far east command. More men but lack of experience, more aircraft but obsolete, less priority of warship, coastal defense in a wrong place and lack of superior reinforcement from neighbouring British colony like British India.
Highly interesting... Normally we see campaign videos.. The preparations are very interesting.. Outstanding work!.. Glad I found this channel. Sofort Abboniert! (Subscribed immediately)
Although after the war, my grandmother worked in a rubber plantation in Malaysia under some westerners. One funny story she told was when one of her friends decided to ask the owner (westerner, likely british) when they will get their pay. The owner replied "tomorrow". The friend panicked, not knowing english, thought the owner had said "du mo lo" which in dialect meant "no more (money)". My grandmother and her friends all had a good laugh afterwards. XD
Wrong. Before ww1 it was trackless jungle. But after WW1 the increasing demand for rubber and Tin caused a rapid increase in plantations and roads. Trackless jungle became crisscrossed with roads but defense plans were not updated. The defending troops were constantly bypassed and outflanked.
My paternal grandfather fought with the famed British Army Malay Regiment. My maternal grandfather was conscripted into the Imperial Japanese Navy lul.
Army plan of forward defense in Thailand was good idea, but more mechanized/motorized force whit stronger firepower attachments (tanks, artillery, engineers) was needed to execute properly (not to forget more experience also). Air Force placement was deeply wrong. In my opinion, RAF needed main airbases deeply in land, whit forward airfields near coast to allow fast deployment of recon planes (to spot landing forces early) and anti-ship strike forces and not to forget more modern planes. For Navy, I would focus on fast boat force (PT boats and DDs) in Malaya and Singapore, whit smaller task force composed around 1-2 CVs and 2-4 BBs which would be based and incorporated together whit Dutch Navy in one powerful Far East Fleet in Java. This way, invasion of Malaya (and Dutch East Indies) would be more harder to execute, but not impossible, while in same time opening more possibilities for proper British defense, allowing in worst case scenario effective deployment of reinforcements for Malaya Command.
In other words, in order to successfully cross Thailand, Percival needs a large force, and RAF needs modern aircraft. That alone only should delayed the Japanese Operation
@@vectorhistoria7767 Yes and no. Really do not think more then 3 infantry divisions (that Percival had) would be needed (but whit all 3 infantry brigades), at least initially. RAF base placement is something that would take 2+ years to fix, ideally. Biggest change is formation of PT coastal force (something I guess nobody though off), that would replace large move of Home Fleet (really unrealistic idea in hindsight) to Pacific, allowing for far smaller Force Z to support this larger coastal force in defense of Malaya and South East Asia.
From the story foretold by our grandparents, malayan people at that time familiarize themselves with 'Japanese slap' and 'drink bubble water follow up with stamping on stomach' for failure to the bow the imperial army.

Automedon Incident. The German commerce raider captured documents in November 1940 from a merchant ship called the Automedon, that clearly showed Britain had no intention of defending Malaya. This intelligence was passed onto the Japanese, who initially thought it was a plant. But they realised the intel was good. Admiral Yamamoto had been opposed to war in the Pacific , because he did not want to fight the Royal Navy and the US Navy. With Britain out of the picture, war with the USA became attractive.
