- Questionable play-calling from new Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson raised eyebrows in the team's Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Zero play action calls is almost criminal, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game where zero have been called lol unreal

The heas coach is supposed to look at and approve the game plan for each game. Both offensive offensively and defensively. It all falls on Raheem and Kirck's lack of mobility.

Once the Steelers keyed in on the runs if the falcons were calling a play action giving the same look as the runs it would’ve worked nicely. According to Bijan Robinson, Zach Robinson is a play caller who listens and takes suggestions from his players. I wonder if Kirk with his experience will interject and make suggestions on what he thinks they should do?
KC stated that it takes a full year to be 100% after that injury. I think KC had some input in this game plan. I don’t think he is healthy. Honestly there is no way that Robinson is unable to draw up play action plays. It was intentional. That’s my base case
It was very much intentional. I wouldn't expect them to say that, it's part of coach speak. They will never tip their hand or show their cards
People questioned Cousins health because they had him in the Pistol formation all game which had people assume he could not drop back due to health. If you know wtf you are looking at then you wonder why is a QB of 13yrs being asked to play out of a formation he has not played in nearly a much as under center. Also if you know wtf you watch then you know Play action works better from the QB being under center. If you are asking Cousins to play out of a different formation than he is use to then why not get some preseason snaps to work the kinks out.

Passed 90% of the time out of Shotgun, and ran 80% of the time in the pistol. Those were the only two formations that were ran and they only did one thing out of each.
God I hope Kirk Cousins is hurt, because if this is just Zac Robinson's offense, this season is already lost and I would lose what little faith I have in Morris.

Why scapegoat Zac Robinson when Raheem Morris is the real problem? Raheem Morris signed off on this game plan after waiting 13 years for his second chance. Morris saw the play call sheet, oversaw it in practice and gave it the green light. Imagine green lighting a game plan that places McGary on an island with TJ Watt over 85% of the time.
The Falcons have an astronomically high number of coaches retained under a new Offensive Coordinator. The Quarterbacks Coach, Running Back Coach, an Offensive Assistant, and Running Game coordinator were all retained under Morris and Robinson.
You would think that a new OC coming in would want to bring people that know their system to help implement it. Especially the Quarterbacks coach.
All in all we have retained 9 coaches under Morris that were here under Smith's Tenure. The average number of coaches retained on new staffs is 1.4
I don't understand why so many coaches, including the assistant head coach, were retained. It isn't a common practice and doesn't feel like Morris actually put a staff together. Just brought his buddies from the Rams and let the rest stay.

It ws the WORST called game in my Falcon life. That guy failed in his debut as an OC, and it doesn't look promising. He needs to address the media and explain what the hell he was thinking.
I appreciate you pointing out the playcaller. I saw the same thing. It was just as vanilla as preseason with zero adjustments. Everyone else is putting all the blame on KC which he had no shot with that gameplan. I knew it was gonna be suspect with a OC that has never called plays or even come up with a gameplan but damn I didn't think it would be this bad. I have zero optimism it will get better solely on the fact they didn't even attempt to make an adjustment to slow down Watt. It's gonna be a long year. I also think the defense will get exposed against a passing team

If Kirk is a play action qb and not a pistol/shotgun qb and Zach didn't run a single play action play, then Zach is either too arrogant trying to run his plays with qb that doesn't fit, or Kirk CAN'T run the play action right now (because he's not 100%). I think it is the latter because a) shotgun/pistol reduces the amount of movement a qb has to make and b) Kirk was literally a statue out there! The only play that he moved on was the touchdown pass.

Imagine putting all your faith in a failed head coach, an OC that’s never called a play in an NFL game, and a mediocre aging QB coming off an Achilles injury and then being surprised when it looks bad. WHY would preseason help? More practice, new QB, new play caller on both sides, new head coach … those are some obvious whys off the top of my head

Hello Aaron. I really appreciate your assessments after watching the film from the game. I have a little more clarity on wth we all watched Sunday concerning the offensive game plan. To utilize 2 formations only & do so with an immobile qb is something ive never seen at the pro level before.
Lastly, and for the 3rd season in a row thru my recollection is it plausible that the nfl merely repackaged the 4th preseason game as week 1...
Cousins was practically begging to play in preseason. He wanted to push himself and work out kinks. Rah said no.

it has to be because cousins is not healthy. robinson ran PA passes and ran under center plays in the preseason with penix and with henickie but dont run it with cousins? that doesn’t make sense at all the only logical explanation is that cousins isnt healthy enough to do it. you can see on sunday that he wasnt stepping up in the pocket cuz he doesnt trust his achillies

Aaron I usually agree with you but you're in denial if you think Kirk's health didn't have anything to do with the play calling. He clearly was trying to have Kirk move as little as possible.
They were undisciplined and their timing was a bit of a mess. That’s the issue with them not playing in the preseason.
I’m disappointed too but to be fair we knew about Pittsburgh’s top tier and healthy defense entering this game, we can define our offensive identity in the coming weeks Philadelphia looks beatable.

The OL lost the game for the Falcons.The C was tipping the snap by lifting his head before he hiked the ball, that's why T.J Watt was getting a tremendous jump.Kirk Cousins injury has nothing to do with it, he scrambled fine when he found Kyle Pitts in the end zone for a TD. Where was the separation from the WRs.Darnell Mooney might not cut it as a #2 WR.Atlanta's defense did hold Pittsburgh to 6 field goals.

While the defense seemed able to make adjustments to keep the Steelers out of the end zone, it was like Zac Robinson said all is fine and we will keep doing the same formation all day.

And not showing what our pa concepts look like, so that we could squeak out a close game against Pitt (could have if we didn’t give them the ball +3) and more importantly, save those looks so that you can beat Philly at home on prime time Monday. No, the biggest obstacle the Falcons have to overcome on offense is Kirk Cousins. It's obvious the guy can't play anymore. Those two INTs were just horrible. The dude has zero mobility and can't escape a sack from my 92 year old grandmother. He should just retire before he gets seriously injured.
The Falcons would have been better off just sticking with Taylor Heinicke, who at least can escape pass pressure and make good things happen.

It wasn’t all the concepts per se, it was the fact that he’ll get a successful play but doesn’t keep the defense on their toes. He also didn’t put out a 2-1 attack which could’ve put a TE out there to help Kaleb slow down Watt at the very least while also keeping Pitts out there as a receiver. Doing some masking, something! He just let Watt practically get 4 sacks with two coming back. It was a lot there to be desired from a play calling standpoint.

I take no joy in saying this--- in fact, it literally hurts--- but I really DID call this. I said that there were 6 points of failure that would relegate this team to a 3-5 win season.
1) Raheem Morris was a tragedy as a HC in Tampa. His teams were always poorly coached and poorly prepared. Yesterday, we saw that tendency here as well.
2) Neither os our coordinators had EVER called a play in the NFL. The DC did a decent job, but the OC looked incapable of calling a deceny high school game.
3) Cousins is a career .500% QB. Yesterday, Kirk wasn't the problem, but he certainly wasn't the answer. Could he have audibled? Maybe? Probably not if the needed play-action passes and screens weren't practiced or prepared for.
4) We only have one NFL caliber WR. Judging by yesterday, we looked like we have NONE!!!
5) No pass rush other than Judon. This might be wrong.
6) Only one CB. This might also be wrong. The defense as a whole cannot be blamed.
So after game one, 4 of my 6 predicted probles wrecked us. I stand by my 3-5 win season prediction.
