"After many years of studying religion and coming to the conclusion that Islam was the only religion that made sense to my nature and who I wanted to be in the eyes of Allah, I converted to Islam. My life has changed drastically. And even though I took about three years to negotiate this decision and think about all the things in my life that I would leave behind and all the things I would incorporate, I had no idea how different my life would be. I had no idea… I have compiled a list of 7 things that I never expected."

3:36 The companions didnt change their names unless there names had bad meanings or meaningless names coz according to a hadees, names meanings affect people. But what I want to say here that islam is not just a religion its a whole identity, which is a nation's identity and it has a political face also. Names are changed to show that now you are a part of muslim community. So that when one hear your name they know you are muslim. And so it shows dominancy of islam by showing the increasing number of muslims. If new converts dont change their name, which is a new trend which I am seeing by giving the examples of shahbas of most earliest days of prophet, then frankly speaking how can you know by hearing names like steve, thresa, corbin or jhon that the other is muslim? You can't know it unless they tell you by themselves. So what is the purpose? Are you ashamed of your identity and you are not proud on it? Do you want to not to change in fear that you might be outcast from your community? I think when you have taken the biggest daring step of changing the religion then changing name is not that big in comparison. You can retain your name if you love it so much, you may add an arabic/islamic name to it so that you may show your alliance with islamic community also. Names have been changing from 14 centuries whenever conversion happened. Why everything must be changed in this era and generation??

I'm a Muslim woman and I was born in Muslim Family but I can understand what my new Muslim Brothers and sisters are going through in the process Muslim try to get the new Brothers or Sister to keep comfort so they won't get lost in this bag confusing Religions for our new members so we try so hard to take over the new member of Muslims life like your a kid and they are the parent we almost did that to one of our new Sister but, she was very smart to say I'm a growing up person had life before Muslim and love Muslim but don't ask me my schedule it was so good everyone act growing up the new Sisters are not our teen agers specially women do that keep calling the Sister where are you what you doing why your not at Masjid it's Ramadan we should follow our Sisters and see when they ask help tell her we are here all the time whenever you need us

Great hearing your story, I'm a born Muslim and I only started to pray at 19 now 22 I learned every in youtube... I feel like sometimes the internet guides u more to Islam...strange
I am the same I became a true believer at a late age too even though I was born in to the family. It is because before we start looking in to our religion we are brainwashed believers. Our parents fail to convey Allah's messages in a way that shows Allah's real characteristics and do not give us the answers we need to give us an intimacy to religion and Allah. E.g. they say "allah says do so you do, he says you don't you don't." - created a cold image in my mind already. What they should say "allah makes things forbidden things that will harm us and bring little benefit." - if they taught like this I would feel closer and more intimate with my Lord. Or when you read the qur'an I didn't even know there were English translations of it till later on in my life. I was told I could only read it in Arabic and I was told what to say in my prayers. I could be saying something bad in prayers and wouldn't know or dare question this is why I called myself a brainwashed believer. After looking in to Islam myself I can finally say I am a true believer. I at least know what surah fatiha means.
And it was not for the same to believe only by the permission of God and makes abomination to those who do not understand (100)
Saying in the interpretation of the verse: And it was the same to believe only with the permission of God and makes abomination to those who do not know (100)
Abu Jaafar said: The Almighty says to his prophet: And it was not for the same created by a way to believe you, O Muhammad, except that you authorize her to do so. Do not prepare yourself to ask for this guidance, and reach it and the Day of Allaah. Know what your Lord has commanded you to define. , Guided by the hand of its creator.

17910 - Tell me Muthanna said, told us Swede, he said, told us the son of the blessed, about Sufian in saying: (What was the same to believe only God willing), he said: by God.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Allaah will guide those whom He wills to believe in you, O Muhammad, and grant Him permission to believe in you. And the wrath of God (18) on those who do not know), means those who do not know about God's arguments and sermons and verses, which evidenced most of the folds on the prophecy of Muhammad peace be upon him, and the fact of what he called for the unification of God,

I am impressed to know that most new converted started by studying d Al Quran. These challenged me to start exploring the Al Quran and YES my life change a lot. Alhamdulillah.
Very true, wearing a hijab is a radical requirement. it was not existed before Arab oil made Arab Wealthy.
Wearing hijab will look bad in public. It is totally political stunt. and nothing.
Modesty is one of the main attribute of Islam. Congrats since when God likes a person He gives him or her a correct understanding of His beautiful natural deen. Converts or born muslims don't matter as long as we are sincere to ask guidance from Allah. That's true most of converts are more dedicated than born muslims because converts went through so much to find truth while most of born muslims take it as granted just because their parents were muslims and they didn't go through all of that research and sacrifices

It's not a radical requirement. It's mandatory for women to wear hijab before they die. And the only reason why it looks bad in public, because people believe that all of us are forced to wear
the hijab ( I wear a hijab and I did it willingly), and because of the terrorists. Hijab represents modesty.

I appreciate your views, particularly the last 3-points. Different cultural practices does influence ones understanding of Islam and like you mentioned, verify, verify, verify is the way to go- yet proper education and learning is essential. And thats 4-thousand hours I guess :)

I'm told by a Muslim no one can know Allah. Christians can hear God. That's a better benefit. Jesus said my sheep hear my voice. Mohammed is dead. Jesus is alive. Jesus raised dead people back to life. Mohammed didn't. Jesus multiplied food. Mohammed didn't. Jesus calmed a storm by saying peace be still Mohammed didn't. Jesus touched lepers and healed them Mohammed didn't. The book of proverbs 30 vs 4 says God has a son what is his name. That was written before the Christian faith was known.

I like most of your thought, and I totally agree on the u put it about each Muslims want the new revert to be part of his sect or mathab, I am a Muslim when I asked full stop, I hope we spread that instead of being narrow minded, that marrow mindedness is effecting not only Islam, but humanity.
But my main point here for the sister is, the politics in the Middle East, I am with u as u put it and encourage you on what u mentioned about it, the only observation I have is, it’s our duty not to overlook injustice as allah told us to do so, I want every one here to read the verse 135 of chapter 4, the Surat alnisaa, the women chapter, I just copy past the verse and I want every one here to read it than have a pause, that to me is the apex of Islam, we need to let other to know it too, the Harvard university college of law have that in the enterance of the law college, isn’t that beautiful, isn’t that an apex of ultimate of justice, will we not learn it and apply it, I hope my sister agree:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ بِالْقِسْطِ شُهَدَاءَ لِلَّهِ وَلَوْ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَوِ الْوَالِدَيْنِ وَالْأَقْرَبِينَ إِن يَكُنْ غَنِيًّا أَوْ فَقِيرًا فَاللَّهُ أَوْلَىٰ بِهِمَا فَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا الْهَوَىٰ أَن تَعْدِلُوا وَإِن تَلْوُوا أَوْ تُعْرِضُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرًا
O you who believe! be maintainers of justice, bearers of witness of Allah's sake, though it may be against your own selves or (your) parents or near relatives; if he be rich or poor, Allah is nearer to them both in compassion; therefore do not follow (your) low desires, lest you deviate; and if you swerve or turn aside, then surely Allah is aware of what you do.

So I am converting but I am Mexican and my culture is very Catholic and it portrays the Virgin Mary like God, you pray to her and thank her. She’s in movies, paintings and clothes. She’s everywhere. ell, not all who was born in a muslim familiy took blindly the teaching of islam from their parents, me my selves as an example,, i was born in a muslim family(indonesian) but i ended up become an atheist when i was 19y.o. Nobody knows about that in my familiy and my environment Then i met 2 of my atheist friends in my college, i started became a hater aggainst islam, everything about islam made me sick before i met some foreigner friends who convert to islam. I got so many knowledge and true facts about islam and it took 4years to makes me convert to islam from them. surprisingly, 2 of my atheist friend also convert to islam

Other than the compulsory thing which every Muslim must follow, differences in minor thing is to acommodate different customs, traditions and places. Islam is not rigid and God doesn't like Humans to be like robots.

Very interesting take. You know most Muslim communities are essentially composed of immigrant for the most, and so when they welcome you, you must welcome them as well, what that mean is that they may not know that your culture may be different and they accept you as they would one of their own, and so you must accept the little odd customs as well, and nosiness is part of social life. It may come across strong for someone born and raised here, but part of it is just love. Incha allah your take will help educate the Muslim communities as well to understand these particularities as well. Some new reverts may appreciate that attention more than others as they may be going through hardships related to their new faith and so the Muslims are encouraged to step up and embrace the new Muslims. Hope this help clear any misunderstandings incha allah. I Appreciate your take for sure.

Well to show love or respect to the prophet or sahaba if they name after them or simply because their original name doesn't mean something good.

Assalamualaikum. Nicely put Sister. To add to your list, Almost all the convert say they didn't expected the connection with the Almighty Allah, when they made the first sujood (Prostration). That feeling is once for a lifetime. Though they were pious, they yearn for that feeling again. But no. Then they say, it is good, we are hooked to the Salah that way, but we get a little less. Not the same.

No.1 in your list is very unexpected but it would be very much expected from non-Muslims. Being loved by almighty God meant everyone will love you eventhough they have not explicitly say so. The result is that you will coexist in harmony and ease with your surroundings. Alhamdullah, this what Allah says in the Qur'an: "Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do" [Chapter 16, verse 97].
