Machu Picchu is an ancient city built by the Incas in Peru over 500 years ago. It is located high up in the Andes Mountains at an altitude of over 7,000 feet above sea level. The city was constructed around 1450 AD but was abandoned about 100 years later, and nobody knows for sure why.
Machu Picchu was unknown to the world until 1911 when an explorer named Hiram Bingham rediscovered it. The city's structures, including the walls and buildings, were in remarkably good condition, considering their age.
The Incas built Machu Picchu without the use of modern tools and machines. They used their skills and knowledge to construct the city using stones cut to fit perfectly together. They also built terraces on the steep mountain slopes to farm.
Machu Picchu's buildings are made of gray stone, and the roofs are flat, with doorways leading inside. Stairs are prominent throughout the city because it's built on a steep mountain slope. The staircase called the "Stairway of the Sun" is famous because it receives a unique winter solstice sun's light.
Machu Picchu is one of the most popular tourist attractions in South America, drawing visitors from all over the world. When visiting, travelers can explore the city, walk the walls and terraces, and climb the stairs for stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
To get to Machu Picchu, visitors will need to fly to Peru and then take a train or bus to reach the city. Due to its high altitude, visitors may experience altitude sickness. Visitors should also be mindful of the city's cultural significance to the people of Peru and avoid littering or damaging any structures.
