I love them, seeing the video for "Ride" was such a breathe of fresh air. I compare them to blind melon, not in sound but in the time they came out. The 2000s sucked music wise, the NYC scene was cool with interpol and the strokes, the yeah yeah yeahs. But the vines came and they had that 90s feel to them. Unlike the other "post grunge" they didnt TRY to be like others. But due to them being good Emo came around. And we all know what happend....... Blind melon came out during pearl jam,AIC, nirvana etc. But blind melon took rural rock and hard rock and was incredible. But was over looked due to them being like Pearl Jam Why, because they had 5 people
I love the contrast to the more shouty material. And it's one of the rare times where the music video well and truly adds to the atmosphere of the song. This really touches the soul.
they even played Get Free at some VMAs back then, closing after the Hives (which seemed to make their frontman Pelle mad); I think there's a video of that performance on YT btw the Vines were big during the Highly Evolved era, but the critic really abandoned them after Winning Days, even though they continued to write great music. guess Craig's behaviour, especially at TV shows, contributed to their "disappearance" from the media as well. dude's a genius but has had his own demons to fight
This comment section is making me feel like I’m not alone with feeling emotional listening to this! Like many of you, I was a teenager listening to this song alone in the dark in my bedroom, trying to make sense of the world around me and what the future held before me. So much has changed since then, but when I close my eyes and hear this song, I’m a teenager again. Hell, most days I still do until I’m reminded I’m 30! I thought 30 would look a whole lot different than it does, but you come to find you’re still the same person you were back then. I struggle to find music these days that holds much meaning or that perfectly encapsulates a feeling or emotion that I can’t put into words, but somehow the melodies and lyrics can. Other commenters are right, we are the lucky ones, and I’m happy that we’re all here to share it. Just think, the possibility of us all listening to this song back in our teen years at the exact same moment is good, and I think that’s pretty special.
I still think this is one of the best thought out and produced songs ever. Got a lot happening in life, more downs than ups...and this song seems to have more context and resonance at 38 than when I first heard it at 16. I'm just trying man, trying for those who matter to me. Did these kids even know the beauty they made?
It feels kinda of when you finally accept the reality of a fucked up situation you are living, wich is the first step of getting out and starting to get better...is sad and hopeful at the same time.
The Vines and Highly Evolved album is one of the most nostalgic things of my life. I used to listen to them on my flip phone when I was 13-15 years old🥲
This song got me up and outside this Xmas eve and most definitely helped my mind. Get up, don't hide away 'Cause I know where they go (get up and go outside) I've seen you down when I was flyin' (it can help your mind too) I'm sinkin' like a stone (get up, don't hide away) I can't breathe I've been tryin'
I had a friend in high school called Thiago Varela, and he was really similar to Nicholls. We always used to talk about that. Unfortunately, I lost my friend years ago because he had brain cancer. I miss him so much, and every time I hear this song, I remember him. Hope he is now in heaven enjoying his "Winning Days".
I swear this is the most underrated band ever. They got a bad wrap as being a "Nirvana clone", which may hold some merit if all you looked at was their radio played singles such as "Get Free", "Outtathaway", and "Ride". But when you listen to their other stuff, and their full albums as a whole, you realize that they were goddamn amazing in so many more ways. Sure they could do the edgy "grunge" stuff well, but look deeper and you'll find something amazing.
I used to listen to the vines a lot when the band came out at the beggining of the 2000s, i bought their first album cause i listened to get free and outthatway on the radio and watched the videoclips on MTV. So i found more than just that two songs on the album. I think they sound like Nirvana and the Beatles. Two awesome bands in the rock history.
@@breath888 It's a shame, but it's too easy to compare bands, because in reality, it's all been done before. But the bands that do have the same style as some big name band, but happen to fly under the radar, are the bands that are most worth listening to in my opinion. I'm not saying new things in music can't be reached, or that a new "sound" can't be made. But it's not as if the Vines did anything original, they just did what they did extremely well, and they don't get the credit they deserve partially because of the labeling. It just sucks to see a band slapped with a label when the majority of their music doesn't even fit that label. They have their hits, and then they have even better music, but since they were slapped with a label, no one really ever discovers it. If that makes sense. Fuck of I know. I'm just some dude on the internet who has always loved this band and always will.
I was one of those unlucky souls who didn't listen to the song in full and thought it was bad 16 years ago, even though I own a copy of the album. My father was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer a few days ago & for some reason, all I could think about was that his "Winning Days" were over, and I thought I'd give it a listen again. I'm glad I have this song now to listen to, thank you Craig Nicholls!

Until last week I have only known a few of tracks by The Vines: Get Free, Outtathaway and Mary Jane. For some reason I missed the rest of their catalogue back in the early-mid 2000s when I was busy listening to britpop and other indie things as a teenager. But now that I've discovered this incredible album called Winning Days and other gems from Highly Evolved and Vision Valley all I've got to say is... HOLY SHIT, Craig Nicholls is such a crazy genius, what an amazing songwriter, man... He instantly became one of my top rock'n'roll heroes. So, yeah, sorry for being a decade late from the party, lol. I wish I could go back to 2002-4 and see the original lineup live.

The vines were ahead of their time, years later this still holds up as a piece of art ❤❤
I miss The Vines. I think Craig Nichols has been so misunderstood in the media who ignored his struggles. Bring back The Vines
Totally agree, people would probably be more accepting these days with all of the adhd/autism/mental health struggle coming to light ❤❤
He was ahead of his time. I also believe he'd be more appreciated today. Iconic rocker
All the lyrics they wrote had such deep meaning, combine it with the music and wow
Such an underrated band.
Andy Munoz I totally agree
True!

One of the best songs still to this day.

Its truly an injustice that this song never went mainstream. Such a shame that so many people never got to hear this song. We’re the lucky ones.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember watching/hearing this song on Much Music back in the day? Seemed mainstream to me.

The winning days are gone
Because I know just where I'm seein'
Was givin' as I know
I can hear
'Cause underneath, there's gold
I need to get around to find it
And when I wanna go
I can dream
I've been tryin'
All my time
I'm just seein' it rise
'Cause it could be the land that's over me (land that's over me)
So, I just wanna let it breathe
The winning days are gone
Because I know just where I'm seein'
Was givin' as I know
I can hear
'Cause underneath, there's gold
I need to get around to find it
And when I wanna go
I can dream
I've been tryin'
All my time
I'm just seein' it rise
'Cause it could be the land that's over me
So, I just wanna let it breathe for now
Get up and go outside
It can help your mind too
Get up, don't hide away
'Cause I know where they go (get up and go outside)
I've seen you down when I was flyin' (it can help your mind too)
I'm sinkin' like a stone (get up, don't hide away)
