Cosette's mother sacrificed her soul to create a contract with a demon in order to protect Cosette and take revenge on Ludwig and the Edinburghs. The demon possessed Cosette (and thus the whole killing Keira scheme). The real Cosette however died in this process of being possessed by the demon.
